Title: Lancashire 1901
Post by: Hunter on Tuesday 11 July 06 20:11 BST (UK)
Hi

I have a census name index for a family for 1901 from the s&n site, however when searching for them on Ancestry in order to view the original document I can't find them, the details are as follows:

Sykes Ben 57 Burnley East Ward  3861 96a
Sykes Jemima  47    "          "            "        "
Sykes Jemima   20   "          "            "        "
Sykes Ben   18         "          "            "        "
Sykes John 15         "           "            "        "

I have tried searching in various ways (with and without the piece number) without success.  Any suggestions welcome.

Have you just put in the piece (3861) & folio number (96), NO NAMES and see what Ancestry has indexed the pages to show?

 ;)

Thanks Pauline, thought I had tried every possible way, I've just tried with the piece and folio - no success - then I tried just with the piece no and got 8000+ possibles, rather than search through them all I added the surname Sykes - then I realised that they are listed alphabetically with first names first.

I then tried with the name Jemima as this was the least common name, I came up with two possibles Jemima Ker and Jemima Liptick - I tried Jemima Ker and bingo!

When I viewed the actual census doc the head of the family Ben Sykes looks a bit like Bensy Ker!  Just goes to show that you shouldn't give up too easily...

(I wonder who Jemima Liptick is?)

Glad to oblige. It's a trick from using street indexes.
Throws up creative name-indexing nicely.  ;D
