Names I am looking for or confirming - 1 - Frances Louise Matthews 2 - Hannah Mary Matthews and 3 - Edith H. Matthews
I would appreciate it if someone could look at the following image for me and tell me if the last 2 names could possibly be very BADLY mistranscribed.
I am looking for Frances Louise Matthews and Hannah Mary Matthews from Honiton. Frances would be aged 17 and Hannah 16.
I read the census image like this
Piece 2033
Lyme St, Axminster
ED 1/ Folio No 5 / Page No 2
Entry No 25 (last line on page 2 & continues on to page 3)
Robert Henry Matthews 24 Head Ironmonger [bn] colyton
Eliza J do Sister unm 21 [bn] colyton
Thomas L Gauntlet Visitor unm 17 Ironmongers Asst [bn] honiton
Hannah M do Visitor unm 16 [bn] honiton
Now Robert Henry Matthews was the oldest of 12 children (8 girls and 4 boys). 4 of his sisters were Eliza Jane (bn 1850), Frances Louise (bn 1853), Hannah Mary (bn 1855) and Edith H (possibly Hunt - bn 1865).
I was thinking that Eliza J and Hannah M were both Roberts sisters. And I did think that Thomas L was also a very badly transcribed Frances L but in 1881 I find there is a Tom L Gauntlet aged 26 born in Honiton, so this Thomas must be legitimate.
If thats the case - then I am still looking for Frances Louise Matthews in 1871. I know she is alive because she married Vincent William Sims in Honiton in the Sept Q of 1874, and she shows up with her husband and children in the 1881 census in Hampshire.
I hope this makes sense - if you need more info - just ask. :)

Another of Robert's baby sisters was Edith H Matthews born in Honiton 1865. I cannot identify her for sure in 1871 (she would be 6 years old) except possibly for this one.
1871 census king st colyton (piece 2035 folio 68/page 32/ED 4)
john kettle (keffle?) head aged 50? printer bn colyton
mary a. do wife aged 54?
edith matthews sister age 6 bn honiton
susan knowles servant age 16 bn southleigh
British origins says Edith is a visitor - looks like sister to me.
The 1881 census confirms the Kettle's names and ages.
While there is also a Matthews sister named Marianne in the family - she was working as a housekeeper for her uncle Henry in Honiton in 1871 & 1881 - so this Marianne (Kettle) does not appear to be related.
So why would a 6 year old be visiting an old couple? Are they related? If they are related then Marianne's maiden name would need to be either Matthews or White.
Edith shows up in the 1881 census living with her mother and siblings in London. (the mother moved the younger kids to London after her husband died in 1875).

Hi Burrow Digger, I've had a look at the census page. It definately says Thomas L Gauntlett and it looks as if Hannah Mary is his wife at that time, although I can't find a marriage cert for them.
Regards
Kate.

I've found Frances' birth cert, states her as Frances Louisa Matthews born September quarter 1852, Axminster, Devon. Can't find her at the moment on the 71.

Kate.

And how likely would they have been to be married when 1 - Hannah is not listed as his wife, 2 - they were both under the age of 20, and 3 - in the 1881 census Tom is listed as Unmarried?
No I think Hannah Mary should have been listed as Matthews not (ditto) - she should have been Robert's sister. Although she was probably also a visitor.

Thomas Lee Gauntlett is my greatgrandfather. Born in Honiton in 1854 he married Katherine Ada White in London in 1881.
