Title: Present day houses in HATHERSAGE
Post by: Keith Sherwood on Sunday 09 July 06 12:31 BST (UK)
Hi, Everyone,
Have had a great deal of help and exciting new discoveries on here re my COCKER family recently.
I'd now like to know whether any of the following houses connected with the family in the 19thC still exist today:
Broom Cottage, Park House, Belle Vue...All in Hathersage..
Very best wishes,
keith

For what it's worth, I noticed this transcription in http://www.wishful-thinking.org.uk/genuki/DBY/Hathersage/MIs.html:

John,
Thanks so much for spotting that for me!  I'm thinking of a visit to the Hathersage area some time later this summer, so need to prepare myself as much as possible...

Keith:

Further testing your patience, but ...

Are you aware that the Hathersage Parish Records have been, in very small part, transcribed at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~dusk/hathersage_pr.html ? The brief extract seems to show two Cockers. The "Hathersage strays" extract also throws up a couple of Cockers.

I hope the transcriber and/or the host website can be encouraged in their sterling effort

John,
No, I've not come across this before - and yes, I do hope they continue this excellent transcription!
Not testing my patience at all, simply adding to my local knowledge of this COCKER family - thanks so much for your time and effort...
Very best wishes,
keith
N.B I think it was about this time last year that I was talking on a Herefordshire thread about a forthcoming family history visit to Hay on Wye, and Clyro just across the border in Wales.  I had all sorts of helpful suggestions and tips before I went, and even ended up looking up gravestone inscriptions for a fellow Rootschatter - only to discover that she'd given me the wrong names to look up.  Patience is the name of the game, isn't it?

Will keep you posted!!

Hi, Pete,
I very much look forward to hearing from you again through the enquiries of your busy cousin re Hathersage in the not too distant future.  Having retired from work myself about five years ago I realise how difficult it gets to fit everything in!
Very best wishes,
keith

Hi

Some progress with Broom Cottage.

........."went to the post office "relief Post Master" they looked up on some sort of sorter they have no luck. Also in a book again failure except I was sure Broom cottage was up the Dale.  Don and I went up and found and it is the last house on the right out of Hathersage.I will keep enquiring about the others."

On OS maps The Dale, nowadays refered to as Dale Bottom runs N and then E from the A625. I estinate the location is around 241816. There are slightly more buildings shown on older maps than the current 1:25000.

Further news as and when!

Pete

Pete,
This is great, and a tremendous help for when I make my trip to Hathersage - possibly in about a month's time.  Am presently reading "Jane Eyre" by Charlotte Bronte which apparently she set in Hathersage - little bit more background atmosphere before my trip there...
Very many thanks,
Keith

Keith

Just got this from my cousin.

......" I have been in touch with the postman who has delivered in Hathersage for 34 years. He says no houses of the names you wanted to his knowledge no Park House or Belle Vue. Sorry couldnt be of more help......"

Well we found one!

Have you looked in the censuses to seek adjacent properties? It might offer clues.

Pete

Pete,
May be duplicating myself a bit, but perhaps this might tidy up this particular thread.  Went to Hathersage this week and got hold of/bought as much of the local literature re the COCKER's that I could.  Broom Cottage I found thanks to your precise directions; and I also discovered Rock House (opposite the pub The Scotsman Pack) and Moorseats, up above the village - both places being at one time lived in by this family.
I'm wondering whether the "Park House" I was enquiring about might have been a mistranscription for "Rock House".  Moorseats was an extra bonus, a lovely mansion, and I suppose an indication of how well they did out of the needle producing (terrible conditions for the people they employed, though, I'm ashamed to say)

Hi Keith
I had a chat with my mother last night & she seems to think Park House is could be on Park Edge,
a small lane overlooking the parkland leading to Brookfield Manor

She is still racking her brain over Belle Vue
Pete, mum lived at the back of your house on the dale at Orchard View, my great-gran also lived in Eastwood cottages

Hi keith
Just had a look at 1881 & found that Belle Vue is in Outseats, which is on the Bamford side of Hathersage. Aerial view :-

Bournetoride,
Thanks so much for all your help, especially with the whereabouts of Belle Vue.  I did find Moorseats - quite a magnificent house - and also Park House, which is the large house right opposite the pub/inn called The Scotsman's Pack.  The sign giving the name of this house was propped up on a wall nearby, and I almost missed it...
Regards, keith
P.S. Have just reread this thread, and of course the place opposite the pub was indeed "Rock House" - and it's pure speculation on my part that "Park House" might have been mistranscribed as such...

Yes I think you are stretching that one a bit.
Do you know who was living at Park house in 1881?

Bournetoride,
No, I don't think I do know who was there in the 1881...

Hi again, Bournetoride,
You've been very persistent on my behalf, and fascinating to see Belle Vue highlighted on that map link.  I must have walked past the house more than once while in Hathersage this last summer without realising it, but will certainly have a much closer look next time I am there.
Thank you so much,
keith

Alvaston Lad,
Now, what an excellent clear view of the house in question that is!  I wonder whether the trains passing at the bottom of the garden were a disturbance in those days...
