Title: Searching UREN family
Post by: cornishpasty on Friday 07 July 06 06:18 BST (UK)
;DHello Everyone, I am new and have been browsing and I must say, I have never seen another site as clear and concise and as good as this one.  I'm so happy to be here.

I am researching my family tree and this is the information I was given by an Aunty who lives in South Africa:

William Martin UREN (my great grandfather - came to South Africa from Cornwall - not got dates yet but will have them soon) 1800's.
Married Ella Mary WILLIAMS also from Cornwall.
Don't know how many children they had but one of them was my grandfather Charles Henry UREN who married Martha Maud Nicholas.  Charles Henry had a sister Beatrice Uren.
Charles and Martha had children who were all born in South Africa:

I am trying to find birth and marriage certificates etc. for my great-grandparents and anything further back that I can trace.  I'm afraid I am still finding my way round the computer and the internet so please bear with me.  LOL.

I was raised in an orphanage throughout my childhood and never really knew my family until I made contact a few years ago, so forgive my naievety.

Any help will be much appreciated and hopefully I can shed some light for anyone else who is trying to link up to this part of the UREN family tree.

Regards
Cornishpasty (from Australia) ;D

You are going to need dates which you should be able to get from your end, but keep this as it may be your starting point. It's a birth registration William Martin Uren registered at Penzance Cornwall June quarter 1841 the reference number is 9/215. It is possible to order a copy of this if you have  a credit card cost about85/90 Rand, but until you are sure it is correct just keep a note of it.

I'm a novice myself, but just had a quick look on freeBMD and found this marriage:

Sept 1843
Uren William          Helston        vol 9 page 123
on the same page is a Williams Mary

That won't be the same William as the one jaywit found .... jaywit's one looks more promising actually.

There are loads of Urens in Cornwall!!!!

The people on rootschat are fantastic and will be sure to help you further.
Good luck with your search.

Thank you so much Jaywit and Engirusaus for your replies - I can't believe how quick that was.  You guys are geniuses.

I have made a note of William's birth reg. no. - thank you both once again.

I am rapt.

Hi Cornishpasty

I have just done a search of marriages of william Uren in the Cornwall area and the only one i can find is :
William Uren,  Apr/May/June 1888, Penzance with a Mary Williams on the same page.(vol 5c pg 445).
If this is your William and (Ella) mary Williams  that would make him abt 47years when getting married if we work from Jaywit's birth registration of william martin uren  june 1841, Penzance.

I scrolled through marriages from the 1850's till i found the above .

just another question ...do you have any idea if your William had siblings. I did come across a william in Penzance in 1871 census living with his 2 sisters Mary jane and Selina along with a nephew , Rueben?

As Engirusaus stated  there are LOADS of William Urens in cornwall.

let us know how you get on

regards
Deb

ps I love your name....  Cornish pasties are one of my favorite foods. I am envious of my parents who live in Truro, Cornwall as they can have one when they like ;D

another ps : I lived in South Africa for 20 years myself   :D

Hello Deb,
I've just written a long reply only to find that I "lost" it.  LOL.  Boohoo, so have to start all over again.

Thank you so much for your post.  I really do appreciate your help in trying to trace things for me.  I have this Aunty in South Africa (my late  father's youngest sister) who is bedridden and can barely write due to arthritis in her hands.  Anyway she is not on the computer but has recently found a nephew whose wife has kindly offered to liaise with me via email and it is such a blessing.  I know that my aunty has been doing the family UREN tree for some years and she has promised to send me all the documents via seamail.  I cannot ask her too many questions at the moment as I have only just got in touch with her through the internet and her nephew.  I am just so excited about the genealogy and I'm afraid that I have even put my book writing aside so that I can deal with the genealogy side of things.

I don't know anything more at the moment other than what I have written because my aunty is bedridden and cannot move around so I am reluctant to ask too many questions.  I don't want her to be hobling around either (she has a broken leg).  Anyway, I think that if I can just contain my excitement, I will eventually get all the information I want.  I do so want to be able to leave it on the internet for future researchers and generations looking for answers.

Thanks so much for your kind help and interest.  Thanks also to everyone else for their kind help.  Like I said before, this is the best website I have ever comes across.  There is so much help and people are actually interested in helping each other.  I am just hoping that with all the information I finally get, that I will be able to tie up some loose ends for others.  How absolutely interesting that you spent 20 years in South Africa.  Please keep in touch.

Hugs to you all
Cornishpasty (CP for short  - LOL).
P.S.  I love Cornish Pasties too except I don't eat meat, so only put the vegies in mine.  Teehee.

while you are both waiting,
try looking in the Surname Interests Table (link at bottom of the page  [Your Surname Interests] (http://surname.rootschat.com/) )

There are two RootsChatters researching UREN, both in Cornwall

Worth sending them a PM ??

;D G'day everyone.  I'm happy to report that I have now had contact from two 1st cousins, one whose Mum is my Dad's sister and the other one's father is my Dad's brother.  Whoohoo, it's all happening.

The information I now have is as follows:

Enoch Warren James UREN (born 1808 in Gulvall, Cornwall) married Mary MARTIN (born about 1811 in Cornwall).  Married in Cornwall 7 March 1831.
They had the following children:

Grace Martins Uren (born 1831 - Illogan, Cornwall)
Enoch James Uren (born 1832 - Gulvall, Cornwall)
Mary Uren (born 1835)
John Uren (born 1838)
William Martin Uren (born 1841)
Ricard Uren (born 1842)
Elizabeth Uren (born 1845

Enoch Warren James Uren died in Cornwall in 1847.

Enoch James Uren married Louisa CORIN in Cornwall 30 June 1858.
They emigrated to South Africa on the ship "Edward Oliver" in Sept. 1858.

Mary Uren (the mother) emigrated to South Africa on the ship "Jalawar" in December 1859 together with the following children:

William Martin Uren
Richard Uren
Elizabeth Uren
Thomas Uren (son of Enoch James Uren)

I am still awaiting information about the other children, namely:
Mary Uren
John Uren
Grace Martins Uren

as I don't know whether they stayed in Cornwall or emigrated elsewhere.

William Martin Uren (my great-grandfather) married Elizabeth Mary WILLIAMS) (date unknown at this stage) and they had the following children:

James Uren born 1878
William Martin Uren born 1880
Mary Jane Uren born 1882
Elizabeth Uren born 1884
Ellen Uren born 1887
Richard Edward Uren born 1889
Margaret Ann Uren born 1891
Edwin James Uren born 1894
Charles Henry Uren born 1896
Beatrice Ellen Uren born 1899

The above were all born in South Africa

Charles Henry Uren was my grand-father.
He married Martha Maud NICHOLAS.

I cannot list their children as they are all living, except 2 who have died.

I am still awaiting more information so will update the Board when it comes to hand.

I BIG, big thank you to ALL of you who have helped me thus far.  Without the help of you all and especially Daizi and Martywillis, I would not have got this far.

CP ;D

1841 census, Bosvenning, Gulval, HO 107/142/1 11/14

Enoch Uren, 30, labourer,
Mary, 30
Enoch, 6
Mary, 4
John, 3
William, 2M
Eliza Mathews, 20, female servant
Mary Martin, 40
(all born Cornwall)

I think they've moved to Madron in 1851:

HO 107/1918 483/15
Wesley Row, Madron
Mary Uren, widowed, 39, laundress, b. Madron
James, son, 18, Carrier's Apprentice, b. Madron
Mary, dau, 15, Laundress, b. dit
John, son, 13, Miller's Boy, b. dit
William, son, 9, Farmer's Boy, b. dit
Richard, son, 7, Scholar, b. Gulval
Elizabeth, dau, 6, Scholar b. Gulval

The IGI shows Enoch Sr. baptised as just Enoch James Uren, in 1808, to John Uren and Elizabeth.  You probably also want to look at www.cornwalleng.com, which has many records for Gulval.  Later baptisms for Enoch and Mary Martin's children show their residence as Trescrowan, and there are an Elizabeth, died Jul 22 1839 aged 57, and a John, died Mar 20 1847 aged 76, who give the same residence.

freecen.rootsweb.com also shows a John Uren whose address is, like Enochs, Bosvenning, aged 70 and with several of his children (their christenings are in cornwalleng)

G'day Jorose and thank you for all that information.  I have spent almost a day trying to find things on www.cornwalleng.com and it gives me "No Matches found".  I just know that I am not doing it right - I also tried freecen.rootsweb.com and I get so lost I don't know where I started :-[.  So, I'm not progressing at all.  I really need someone to help me - anybody?????  Please, pretty please.

I don't mean to sound "blonde" but I am still trying to learn how to research and it's not easy.

I was trying to find Enoch Snr's parents and looks like you have told me who they are.  John and Elizabeth Uren?  Now all I have to do is find this information on the internet.  By the way, what does IGI mean ? :-[

Thanks very much Jorose.  Your help was much appreciated.

Hiya CP

Well I have been searching for your Grace Martin Uren, daughter of Enoch and Mary Uren, b abt 1831...as you had said that you needed to find her .

I went back to the 1841 census: with Enoch Uren, Mary, his wife and their children....GRACE is not with them. The only kids living with them are:
Enoch 6
john 3
Mary 4
William 2 months

So it looks like Grace martin Uren must have died young! :'(
(there are a couple of deaths under Grace Uren before 1841 ...
Grace Uren march quarter 1839 Penzance
Grace Uren december quarter 1840 Helston)

Also living next door to Enoch in 1841:
JOHN UREN 70 farmer ...Enoch's dad?
John 30...Enoch's brother ?
Richard 15
Ann 20
Elizabeth 15
Cordelia 15
Catherine 12
and 2 servants... John Cornow and Jane bennatto?

Will carry on trying to find the others ....
Was great talking to you in chatroom last night. ;D

take care
Deb

G'day Deb ;D,

Thanks so much for that.  Yes, it appears that John Uren (70) is Enoch's father and it's great that we have found him and some more family (John's other children).  I now have another branch on my tree - whoohoo.  So exciting. ;D

I would say that it definitely looks like Grace died young. :(

The other two, John and Mary Uren (Enoch's children) are the ones I would like to find now.  These 2 did not emigrate to South Africa.

Enoch and Mary Uren also had 2 other children, Richard (b. about 1842) and Elizabeth (b. about 1844).  These children emigrated to South Africa with Mary (their mother).

Thanks for searching for me Deb.  You are just the "antz pantz". :-*

Always great to catch up with you in the chatroom too.

Hugs
CP

Hi
I'm still searching for you.... thought I would look a little bit further back to see if I could get more clues on the family just in case the missing John and Mary might have been living with family.

still checking it all out but I did find this ...not sure if you have it ..

MARRIAGE:
John UREN to Elizabeth WARREN
10 mar 1804 Gulval, Cornwall

On IGI :
7 march 1831 marriage ;
Enoch Warren james Uren to Mary Martin

14 dec 1837 birth;
Enoch James Uren
parents : Enoch Warren James Uren  and Mary

I know you had the details of the  above ... but  I  wanted to add the 'WARREN' bit to his name . Most probably you have all this already !!~ :-\

back.......

Just rechecked the 1841 census where we had Robert Uren aged 70 (Enoch's dad?) living next door to Enoch , Mary and family .... welllllllll.... living next door the Robert Uren is:

ELIZABETH WARREN 55 Lab
William Warren 15
Grace     "     12

now i am confusing myself.....  so ....
John Uren married Elizabeth Warren (see above)  in 1804 ...they had Enoch Warren James Uren in 1808. He, Enoch , then married Mary martin in 1831 and had various kids including another Enoch and the missing John and Mary.

oops have just reread posts and you knew about the "warren" bit ...sorry...not paying attention ::)  :-X

will be quiet for a while hee hee

Deb, this is so fantastic.  Yes, I knew about Enoch Warren James Uren having the "Warren" bit included in his name but I did not know that John, his father had married Elizabeth WARREN.  Now it all makes sense.  It's just some more much needed information.  You "star" !!!

Now ............ Elizabeth WARREN was 55 (at time of 1841 census) so she would have been born about 1786, William WARREN about 1826 and Grace WARREN about 1829.  Where does Elizabeth WARREN fit into this picture Deb?  Why is she listed as WARREN (I thought that was her maiden name), or is this her mother?  C'mon - you are the brains here LOL.  I'm confused already hahahahahahaha.

Oh ............. Deb, don't you just love this ................ I reckon we'll never go senile.  Our minds will always be forever busy in RootsChat.com.  I even dream about the family tree. :( ;D

I am also intrigued by the fact that I now have John and Elizabeth Uren's children's names so I can start hunting them down too.

Catch ya later ....................

hi

I think maybe Elizabeth WARREN who is living next door to all the URENS in 1841  is  Mrs. Elizabeth (Warren) Urens sister-in-law(who married john Uren).

Elizabeth Warren who married John UREN in 1804, must have had a brother who married an Elizabeth who is widowed ? .

Blimey ... rather late here and I am still confusing myself.
Let me look further...

G'day Deb,

Great news.  Someone on Rootschat.com has sent me a PM about some living rellies in Cornwall.  This kind lady has also sent me details of the Census years 1841 - 1901 and I am "over the moon".  Silly me, I didn't think to look up the more recent Census data.

It seems that the same house (or Farm) in Penzance has been in the family for a few generations and the Urens are still living there.

I am trying to work through all the names and trying to tie up the "Johns" and then I will be satisfied that we have found the lost "John Uren" and his family, at last.  Now to find Mary Uren - his sister.  Sheesh !!!  This is hard work.  Wish I knew what I was doing hahahahaha but with every mistake I make, I am learning a little more about how to research properly.

Catch up soon Deb.

Hi Everyone,

I have finally managed to get back into RootsChat.com briefly to let you know that my computer has had nasty viruses and my son has had to strip it down completely.  He has finally set up most things on the computer for me but I cannot be on the computer very often.  It is linked up to his as I am living with my son and family at the moment.  Please bear with me until I can get a new home and get my own computer set up.  I will try to check messages from time to time .

Suse, thanks for your message - I have no idea at this stage about the Pellew connection but once I'm up and running I will definitely look into it.  I have lost an awful lot of personal date too, including my Family Tree that I originally set up.

Take care everyone.

Hi there! I know this thread is a bit old - but I am doing some research on a property (13 Melory Crescent, Magill SA) in Adelaide Australia, and came across the same name whilst reviewing the state heritage listing for the property in question - "William Uren from Helston, Cornwall, acquired 50 acres and built an eight-room dwelling on part of Section 342, later known as Woodforde House, in 1856. Standing in grounds of 20 acres the dwelling, subsequently enlarged, remained in the Uren/Nightingale families until March 1977. "
