Title: 28th Battalion
Post by: alchemyst on Thursday 06 July 06 13:25 BST (UK)
Not sure if this is the correct site to look for information about an Australian, Albert Morrow, who was killed at Gallipoli.  A teenager when he died - would welcome any information.

Details of Albert can be found on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site and you should be able to find a digital copy of his entire service record at the National Archives of Australia website.

Would you believe I'm going to Dumbleyung next week on holiday so if you don't live in the area, can I do anything for you such as check the war memorial?

Cheers
Jenny

Many thanks for info Sandgroper and Manchester regt.
Apologies that I can't work out how to reply individually!!
If either of you have any idea about Albert before he joined the army I would be most grateful.
Sandgroper any info you find in Dumbleyung will be very much appreciated but your time might be better spent enjoying your holiday!
Many thanks & best wishes,
Alchemyst

Alchemyst, looking at the war memorial would be the highlight of my holiday! Dumbleyung is certainly not a hot holiday destination.

Dumbleyung consists of a roadhouse, police station, post office and a couple of stores and not much else. I think about 300 people live in town. I'm only going to help out friends who are going on a cruise and need pets looking after, so if his name is there I will take a photo.  If there's anything else you want me to do, please let me know.

Cheers
Jenny

Alchemyst, you can find Henry listed in the Western Australian Post Office Directories (1893-1949) at

http://www.slwa.wa.gov.au/pdf/battye/pods/Post_Office_Directories_Contents.html

Have also seen this - a couple of Morrows listed but no Albert?

http://www.anzac.dpc.wa.gov.au/index.cfm?event=memorialItem&mem=222

I have seen it a couple times in the Town Hall - will try and get a photo.

Albert is listed on the war memorial so will go have a look.

http://www.anzac.dpc.wa.gov.au/index.cfm?event=memorialItem&mem=225

Will ask around Dumbleyung for any info on the Morrow family.

Have you looked at the National Archives of Australia website?
http://www.naa.gov.au
Click on 'Search' and key in his name plus dates 1914-1918.  You will get an entry for Albert. Click on 'show digitized copy). You will get his army attestation papers, war service record, etc etc  - about 39 pages of info which you can print out.
He said he was a farm labourer, his next of kin his father Henry of "Whalley", East Wagin, W.A.

Hi

I don't know if your still following this item of inquiry, however i grew up in dumbleyung and have several books on the area. I just looked up one and found a pic of the Morrow family, father and sons. It appears 3 boys left the farm to fight in WW1. If you are still interested I can look up my other Dumbleyung books.

Hi Troods,
Thanks for your message - it was indeed a surprise and also serendipidous!
Yes, I am still interested in the Morrow family - especially a photo/picture of Albert.  Another member of Rootschat was very kind to send some pictures (some time ago) - possibly the one you mentioned (if it has Mr Morrow on the extreme right and Tony next to him) but it must have been taken after they returned home from the War - no Albert!
As Albert was only a teenager when he enlisted - if there are any photos of him he would be very young.
I will be grateful for any further help.
Regards,
Alchemyst

I am the Grandneice of Albert and have some information on him as I am researching the Morrow Family.  If I can assist in your research in any way please let me know.  You can find Alberts service records (which were digitalized when I requested a copy) at http://www.naa.gov.au/ if you do a search.  Best of luck.

Photo of Albert and his brother William.  Albert is the shorter of the two.  You may be interested in the book "Iron in the Fire" which was written by my Grandfather Edgar Morrow (Albert's brother).  The book is about Edgar's experiences during the war - the dedication reads "To my wife, and my parents and in memory of Albert, my brother".  The photo on front of the book is the one I have attached here.

Just thought of something else you may be interested in although I guess it depends on why you are looking for the information.  It is believed that Albert was one of the last men killed at Gallipoli.  Also he grew up in Dongolocking not Dumbleyung.

The photo is the only 'good' one we have of Albert (that I know of).  Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.  As mentioned previously I'd be interested in knowing what your interest is.  Albert's neices and nephews get together once a year (normally around June/July).  It's my Father's turn to host the get together but it will be here so if there is something you'd like me to ask them let me know - of course they didn't know Albert but there's always a story or two.
