Please could someone lookup Henry W Marris aged 24 Marylebone.
I am particularly interested in knowing Henry's occupation.
Many thanks
Marc

Looks like all those people were in a tailoring/drapery sweatshop in Little Portland St ...... the word could be Assistant - the enumerator has grouped people together and written DRAP next to them.
Previous page would support 'Drapers Assistant' ...

Might not be mine then - I'm looking for a policeman.
Please can you tell me where Henry was born and if he was married.
That way I can eliminate him from my list of possibles.
Thanks
Marc

ok thanks

happy to help search if you have more details ?
Marris is a great candidate for mistrans ..... if you have a rough idea of DoB and PoB or parents / area .... ?
-
That's very kind of you to offer. Details as follows.
Henry Marris (21 - Shoe riveter) married Eliza Wilkins (24), March 1886, Wesleyan chapel, Derby. Father John Marris (Gardener).
This would mean Henry is born approx 1864. I have found Eliza with children on 1891 and 1901 census but no sign of Henry (Eliza is described as married i.e. not a widow), although Henry is deceased by the time his daughter marries in 1907.
Henry's occupation is variably shoe riveter, policeman on his children's birth certificates that I have. On one of the birth certificates he is listed John Henry.
Thanks for your help with this.

Hmmmm.
Only handle I got on him was in 1881, a Family called Mariess in Knighton Leicestershire. (just south of Leicester itself - so not that far from Derby....)
Father John - born in 1833, Wellesbourne - Warwickshire
Occupation - Gardener
Living in the Civil parish of Knighton in Leicestershire
Stonygate Rd

amongst other children* there is a John H. aged 15 - ie born in 1866, Staffs, Comberford - which I cant locate at present .... younger kids born after 1871, but I can find no trace of the family in 1871. Nor after a quick search in 1891 ... but see below ...
This is supported by a Birth Index entry in the Tamworth District: (altho Comberford isnt mentioned)
Births Mar 1866

MARRIS John H W Tamworth Vol6b Page367
*Younger kids - Matilda 9, Richard 7, George 4 and Frederick 2.
In 1861, Father John now stating aged 32, is a Widower with his parents in Wellesbourne - and he is a Gardener....
I think that this is his (2nd) marriage to the Sarah seen on the 1881 as his wife.
Marriages Jun 1863

MARRIS John Leicester Vol7a P309
WESSON Sarah Maria Mary Leicester Vol7a P309
The census spelling of the surname isn't a mistran, so the marriage may not be the correct couple - but as you have found the spelling as Marris too ....
Where was Eliza in 1891/1901 - I had a quick look in 1891, but couldnt see her....
-
1891 John the Gardner - PoB misspelled, and surname now recorded Marris
John Marris - 60 ; Weelingham, Warwickshire, England
Civil parish: Knighton
RG12/2497 Folio 113 Page 19
John H has of course gone (if we suspect its him that married in 1886.)
Frederick has become Edwin and John's older brother Thomas aged 26, a Joiner is there ... Mums christian name unreadable .. son George a Solicitors Clerk
-
John and Sarah are still in Knighton in 1901 - but no kids are left at home ..
RG13/3001 - Folio 79 Page 27
Stoneygate Rd - Gardeners Cottage !

Now I've seen Eliza in 1901 - in Knighton, Leics - I'd say this was all looking good ...
-
Wow you have been busy - plenty for me to be getting on with here.
You'll find Eliza in 1891 in Knighton only she's called Mary at this point for some unknown reason - children are Edith and Elisetreth (another mistrans I presume).
Thanks very much for your help with this.

Yes, I think thats established Henry (John Henry's) lineage back to 1861 ..... pity that he's so successfully hidden himself in 1891/1901 !
-
Yes and 1871 too.
I'll have a good look for his death maybe he'd died by 1891 despite Eliza describing herself as married as opposed to widowed.
Thanks once again for your help.
