Title: Could anyone kindly HELP me with missing O'Shaughnessy in 1900 Census??? UPDATE
Post by: Tees on Saturday 01 July 06 12:32 BST (UK)
Hi Fellow Rootschatters!

A kind Rootschatter and I were teamed up and tried to find my Joseph H O'Shaughnessy in 1900 Census but could not find him.

Hope someone here could spot him for us--have a better luck than us???

I only know that he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana circa 1870. He usually worked as an engineer but I cannot be certain if he would be one in 1900 Census.

Last census he was in was in 1880 which placed him in Manhattan (New York City) and from 1910 on, in Brooklyn.

It seems that his mother returned to live in New Orleans in 1900--his father may had passed on.
I am not sure if his mother in 1900 Census was my relative.

The surname's spelling varied throughout the censuses due to mistranscriptions by the enumerators.

I would be most grateful to you as it will complete my censuses on my O'Shaughnessy(s).

Ever gratefully yours,

Tees

Hi Tees

Was he married by 1900 - if so what was wife's name/details? Was his age consistent throughout the other census'?

Also might help to provide his parents details, even his siblings, just in case - as it appears you're not sure if either his father had died by 1900 or that his mother had moved back to New orleans?

Have you checked out these database' - you might find his father on the deaths database:

Hi Ambly

Oh, yes--his age was very consistent throughout all the censuses.

He was not married until 1902/3.

Here are the details on his family from 1880 Census:

Information removed due to copyright violation. See http://www.rootschat.com/forum/copyright.php for more details

This census information was quite a surprise to me because I have his death certificate on him which stated that he was born in California to the same names of stated parents.  Now I understand why all the censuses from 1910 on showed his birthplace to be New Orleans, LA.

I do not know if the details from the 1880 Census would be of any help because of the female siblings??

Hope this will further a better search of him in 1900 Census.

With thanks

Tees

Hi Rootschatters,

I am terribly sorry that the census details were deleted from this posting and I was not aware of this until today.

Moderators, I am going to type the details again. Hope this satisfy you without having to remove the details.

Patrick O'shaunesy born circa 1838 in Ireland Self-Employed
Bridget "               "  Wife born circa 1838 in Ireland
Amelia "                " Daughter born circa 1862 in LA
Emma "                 " Daughter born circa 1865 in NY
Joseph "                " Son born circa 1870 in New Orleans, LA
Laura "                 " Daughter born circa 1871 in New Orleans, LA

All were living in Manhattan. (All typed up by me.)

I left the original spelling of the surname O'Shaughnessy as written on 1880 Census so you can get idea of what it may had been looked on some censuses.

Hope this 1880 information help you in finding my Joseph O'Shaughnessy. He may have a middle name of Henry which was on one census I have on him.

Kind regards

Tees

Hi again,

I feel as if I am writing this post for myself... :)

I would really appreciate any help with finding my missing O'Shaughnessy.

The reason is that I need this census information to clue in as to where my great grandparents may got married in (Manhattan or Brooklyn).

No certificates are recorded for them at the City Archives which points to that they were married in the church.

The kind researcher at the diocese explained to me that I have to know where they were living at the time of their marriage as it will clue in as to where they would be married in the church. Then he will pointed me to a right church that may have a record of their marriage.

I have been working on this angle for many years now since I was in my teens.

I am somewhat at the end of my Wit's end with this missing O'Shaughnessy.

I am crossing my fingers and hope for the any helpful hand.  ;D

Kind regards

Hi Rootschatters!

I managed to find a correct marriage record on my great grandparents O'Shaughnessy. (whew!)

OK-I am wondering if anyone is the expert when it comes to using the specific address in locating the census information.

According to the marriage record, Joseph Shaunasy was living at 49 Emmett Street in Brooklyn. I would like to learn more details about the residents at this address to see if there were any connection between Joseph and the residents.

Also, my great grandmother arrived in the US around 1902. So, she may had not been living at this address previously but it is possible she was staying with her relatives--the address was 19 Liberty Street in Brooklyn. Who were living there?

Hope someone could help me out! I would be most grateful for any help or information you may find.

Kind regards

Tees

Hi Susan!!

Hope all is well with you!

The information you posted here--sounds very promising for this is very neighbourhood they have their children brought up in.

May I ask whom were living at 49 Emmett Street if you do not mind my asking? This is what I am asking.

Baltic Avenue you mentioned above--it made a lot of sense now because I "read" the death certificate on a Bridget O'Shaughnessy (Joseph's mum) in the Archives. I was not too sure if it was her. Strangely, she was a widow and I was able to find only one Patrick O'Shaughnessy death record--he died in NYC only one year before in a lodging house ( ???) and he was married.

I am certain that they were Joseph's parents--it is such shame that I cannot identify the records positively without any family member as an informant but with early death records--the informant is the doctor only.  :(

Is Liberty Street in same neighbhourhood?

Many, many thanks to you for finding Joseph's family in other censuses because without it, I will never accept the marriage record without knowing who his parents were!  ;D

Kind regards

Tees

Hi Susan

I found Emmett Street using your information.

It had to be a tenement as I read somewhere that it was very poor area at that time.

My Mum remembers visiting her Grandmother O'Shaughnessy in a dark apartment with only cold water. She tried to remember what street it was in 1940s but could not.

She never liked the neighbourhood.

Is Liberty Street in the same ward?

Hi again,

Still have some trouble with finding my O'Shaughnessys in 1900 US Census. I tried to use the LDS' new census records but could not make any sense of their searches.

The update is that I managed to find a birth record & baptism record on Joseph O'Shaughnessy using the information off the censuses and the marriage record and the death certificate.

The information on the baptism record correctly tied in with the information I have on him from other documents in my possessions. I was able to confirm the birth record that Susan found for me was his despite the fact that his surname and his mother's maiden name were off the mark. :)

Susan--heaps of thanks being sent your way and my cap is off to you for guessing correctly that two birth records you found are my family. :)

So it looks I have a right guy now.

I still would like to know where he was in 1900 and same with his parents.

Any helpful suggestion?? I simply need to narrow down the years I would have to search for his parents' death records if they were ever recorded.

Still optimistic about finding this family in 1900 US Census. :)

Kind regards,

Tees

Have you tried to find them in city directories?  I didn't have any luck with finding them with the 1890 one on Ancestry, but there may be some from that time frame available through the Family History Centers.
Title: Re: Could anyone kindly HELP me with missing O'Shaughnessy in 1900 Census??? UPDATE

Hi Shellyesq,

1890 US Censuses were pretty destroyed in the fire and very little reminded. But New York and Louisania censuses are amongst the censuses destroyed in the fire.

I am much interested in 1900 US Census. The only trouble with this family is that their surname consistently mistranscribed throughout the censuses.

I am pretty certain they are still in NY for my great grandfather got married in Brooklyn in 1902 and had a family with his Irish-born wife. They are my Grandfather's parents.

As to the city directories, how one can identify a person as yours? Unless your ancestors pretty stayed in same place, it is a good tool--that's my position on using city directories. If there is online databases, I will be happy to search them but many are paysites. I had spent fortunes on many databases. Need to cut back on expenses. :)

With this family, they may have moved around between 1880 Census and 1900 Census. For instance, in 1880, the family was in Manhattan and in 1870, they were in New Orleans, LA.

This family is a bit troublesome because my Great Grandfather may be only one male sibling. It would be great if we find that he had younger male sibling or two in 1900 Census which will enable me to track them down. But all of his known siblings were female.

Vital records are strangest part of this family because for an example, my Great Grandfather was named Patrick on his birth record yet his baptism record shows his name as Henry Joseph! It seems he was originally named after his Father but for some reasons his parents changed their mind by baptising him under new names! It is same with his siblings.

Luckily, the baptism record does have his birth date which match up with his birth record. The parentage were confirmed by his marriage record.

I am trying to determine whether his parents died in New York City or not because it seems that Great Grandfather married and settled down in Brooklyn.

I know his Father was a cooper and was consistedly recorded on two censuses. This is an useful information to identify in the city directories but you cannot truly confirm that it is yours if the name is common like his.

I have tried searched the death records on his parents especially his Father--none of them shows his occupation as a cooper. It makes me think that he probably was not actually a cooper at all. Yet 1870 US Census shows that he is somewhat "prosperous" and not sure if 1880 US Census shows the same information (will double-check this information). How accurate the information is my question.

Too bad that early NYC death records does not list an informant--they were always a doctor. This is very difficult to determine which record is my Great Grandfather's parent's.

If there is a family plot, it would be great as it will pinpoint which record is correct. I do not know where his parents were buried.

Even more is that I still could not find my Great-Grandparents' firstborn's birth record nor death record. I have the baptism record of their first child whom my Mother never knew about. It was confirmed by two birth records on my Grandfather and his "eldest" sister where they asked how many children are in the family. It seems the parents named a firstborn Angela which was recorded in 1905 NYC Census whereas the baptism record shows different names.

I hope this does not put anyone off but I am illustrating my difficulties with this family.

Kind regards,

Tees

Yes, I know the 1890 Census was destroyed.  I was referring to the 1890 city directory.

Sometimes, city directories will have dates of death for a person who died in the last year, so that can be something of a jackpot if you get lucky.

Hi Shellyesq,

Ah, thank you for your clarification. Much appreciated!

Never know that you can find a wee gem of information in the city directories.

Which name did you look up on in 1890 city directory? Just out of curiosity.

I think I did try look up on the city directory on the Ancestry--I am not sure about it.

I have no longer a subscription to the Ancestry.

Perhaps can anyone could tell me how to do search on LDS' 1900 US censuses an easy way without having to use the surname?? I have much trouble with this but it looks promising. Ancestry failed me in 1900 US Censuses but think LDS may have a surprise for me there.

Tees

I tried to look for anything starting with Osh or O'sh and nothing remotely close to O'Shaugnessy turned up.

For the 1900 Census on the LDS site, I would try switching where it says "Exact & close match" to Exact, close, & partial.  That seems to bring things up, even if I don't put in the surname.

Hi Shellyesq,

Aw, thanks for your attempts to look up on this family.

It does not have to be Osh or O'sh because they can be without O' prefix!! My Great Grandfather wrote his last name as a Shaunsgy on his marriage record! Fortunately, for me, his wife's name is correct.

All of the censuses up to 1905 consistently misspelt.

Will take another stab at 1900 US Census on the LDS site. Hope to find my Great Grandfather there.

Hi All!
I was visiting my friend in NYC recently. I used this opportunity to pop in the Archives to get a death certificate which I was certain is on my grandfather's "unknown" sister. It turned out to be her! She was buried in Calvary Cemetery.
I went there and got a kind help from the gentleman with looking up in the records. But it was close to the closing time. I had to leave it with him as he could not find her right away due to the surname constantly "changed." I even told him that I think she was buried with her grandparents--I gave him their names. He e-mailed to me next day with the information which my hunch was spot on.My grandfather's sister was buried with her grandparents and her aunt!I am chuffed because it saved me from having to go through all the possible death certificates.
It turned out that Patrick O'Shaughnessy died in 1893 but his wife Bridget was much alive until her death in 1905 in Brooklyn. She had an address on the cemetery records. DeGraw Street in Brooklyn. Wondering if we could try again and locate her in Brooklyn.
Do anyone has an access to 1905 New York Census (particularly on Brooklyn)??
Kind regards,
Tees

Thanks for your encouraging words, Shellyesq! It was a lovely surprise to find so many people at same time.

Ohio Susan, she put down her address as 625 DeGraw St. I am not sure if it means her address prior to her death or it was the actual address that she was living at the time of her husband's death.

You see, the only NYC death certificate I could find is in Manhattan is for Patrick. I think the family was still living in Manhattan unless I am mistaken.

Bridget's certificate is from Brooklyn. I would have to send for both certificates which is a bit expensive by the mail, not in person.

Wondering if this Jos is mine??

Hope this further information helps you.

Hi All,

Am I labouring under the assumption that it's better to send for the death certificates to help us to find my ancestors?

By the way, I managed to find out that my Great-Grandfather's sister was living in Brooklyn in 1900 Census via her burial record.

Unfortunately, I cannot find any marriage record on her--just to confirm if the family is correct one or not.

This seems to indicate that the family may have left Manhattan sometimes after Patrick O'Shaughnessy died?

I only have a question: I found the death record on him but the date stated that he died on 4th yet the burial record shows he was buried on 20th?? Does that mean they have a mortuary back in 1893??

I am not sure if the death record is the ONE I am seeking because of many days between his death and burial.

His poor wife Bridget just purchased the plot three days before his burial.

Kind regards,

Tees

Tees, I haven't read your thread closely enough to determine if he was buried in the state of New York and in which month he was buried, but these are three reasons I've come across:

Winter Weather:  I've not come across this situation personally, but a few friends have told me about delays with their ancestors' burials due to the ground being too hard to dig during a particularly cold winter spell.

Rainy Weather:  once again, a friend told me, there was a delay in her relative's burial, due to extreme rain conditions.  It delayed the process for a couple of weeks.

More recent burials:  one friend told me the cemetery workers were on strike, so there was a delay in burials!

Lisa,

Thank you for taking time to answer my query regarding a delay in the burial.

I never thought about the weather as a culprit!

It was April. It may be a very wet weather? Think it will require some research through old newspapers from that year to see what the weather was.

I guess I will go ahead and order that death certificate then.

Hi Rootschatters,

Could anyone kindly help me with spotting Bridget O'Shaughnessy and her son Joseph in 1900 US Census?

I managed to find his sister Laura Nann in 1900 US Census via the cemetery record with her married name. But her husband and children mysteriously disappeared after that. They were in Brooklyn, NY.

That seems to tell us that that the family does remain in Brooklyn.

I still have much trouble in finding Bridget and Joseph.

I am fairly certain that they are in somewhere near or on DeGraw Street.

How do I go about and see people on this particular street in 1900 US Census?

I managed to find a Patrick O'Shaughnessy in 1892/3 city directory where he was listed as a cooper. I am not sure if it is him.

I hope someone would kindly lend me an assisting hand with finding this family.

Thank you very much in advance,

Post by: Tees on Monday 30 April 12 18:33 BST (UK)
Hi Rootschatters,

I just got the death certificates on my great great grandparents and their daughter.

According to the death certificates, Patrick O'Shaughnessy died at home: 62 DeGraw Street, in Brooklyn, Ward 6 on 16th April 1893.

His occupation was cooper yet the directory listed him as an oiler? Umm...

Informant was the doctor.

And his wife Bridget was a Shaughnessy herself?  :o That is what her certificate says?? Her mother a Moran (not correct spelling here). The doctor probably was misinformed by someone in the family. I think Shaughnessy father was her husband's, not hers.

She died at 194 DeGraw Street...a tenement 6? It seems she had been living in NYC much longer than I thought...her certificate stated that she had been living in NYC for 45 years and in the US for the same length? A bit confusing here...

So, that means they had lived in Brooklyn...could someone kindly help me find Bridget O'Shaughnessy in 1900 Census? Please note that the surname is often badly transcribed.

Their daughter died in Staten Island. I am not sure why she died there when her husband and her family was in Brooklyn according to the 1900 Census?

The parents' names are correct with a slight wrong spelling of her mother's maiden name.

All the certificates are correct because the information matches the cemetery and the burial dates I obtained from the cemetery.

Hard to believe that Patrick O'Shaughnessy was 35 years old at the time of his death when his wife died in 1905 at age of 53 years old. I believe the couple did not know their actual ages.

Now, back to the point, that means the family settled in Manhattan for a brief period and moved to Brooklyn sometimes between 1890 and 1893. And that entry in the directory may be my great great grandfather as he died at the very address.

Then where was my great grandfather? Comes to think of it...it was him who was listed in the directory, not his father! Joseph O'Shaughnessy is my great-grandfather. That means he was in Brooklyn. And what is an oiler?

Then, why did his father's certificate stated that there are only two persons living at the address?

My mind is bogging now.

Hope you can help me sorting this out.

Thank you,

Tees

Are the 4 children in the 1880 Census all the children that they had?  How many children were still living as of 1900?   Since the 1900 Census lists the number of children a woman had, I thought that might help with your Bridget, given the discrepancies in age and various surname spellings.

www.familysearch.org has the 1892 and 1905 New York state censuses now, so those might be other sources to check if you haven't done so already.

Hello Ohio Susan,

It has been ages since last I posted here!

I managed to find Joseph O'Shaughnessy with his father and sister in 1892 and another family living nearby was my great grandfather's sister and her family. This information helped a lot as I know I have a right family.  Unfortunately, I am unable to find Joseph O'Shaughnessy in 1900 US Census. I found him in 1905 NYS Census with his wife and their firstborn.

I managed to track down his sisters in 1905 NYS Census and to my surprise, my great great grandmother was down as Annie when I know she was always Bridget but she was down as mother in law to this family and it's her daughter's family.

Now I am still working on 1900 US Census for Joseph O'Shaughnessy and his mother. They were not with their sisters anywhere. Oddly, I found him living at the address in Manhattan at the time of his firstborn in 1903.

I simply want to update you on the progress I made.

Thank you,

Tees
