Is there any sign of my 3Xg grandfather John Ibbetson (Ibbison, Hibbison, etc) in the 1841 census please?
He was born in Thirlby in 1824 and I think he was one of several illegitimate children of Ann Ibbetson. (On his marriage certificate he named his father as Harry Clayton.)
By 1851 John was married and living in Thirsk and I suspect that in 1841 he would be living somewhere around Thirsk, Thirlby, Boltby, Felixkirk. He was an ag lab / farm labourer.

Hi Saar
Living in Oz, my Yorkshire geography is basically NIL, so I'm not sure if I am in the right location - but this one looks a possibility (noting all ages were rounded down to nearest 5) - the occupation doesn't look correct, however.
Hannah Ibetson 40
James do 20 Wollen weaver
Jane do 20 F.S.
John do 15 Wollen Weaver
All born in County
Place is given as Havercroft Town Batley Yorkshire

HI Trish
Many thanks.
No, I don't think it could be my family - too far away.
I am just about certain that my John would be in the North Riding - probably working somewhere as an ag lab.
He might be as far away as say Helmsley but probably in one of the villages round Thirsk.
Cheers

I didn't see anyone else that was very likely - someone who knows the area may do better - sorry about that

Thanks for checking.
Ann had 2 other sons baptised at Felixkirk - James in 1818 and Robert in 1820.
Is there any sign of them in 1851. Birthplace probably Thirlby or Boltby or possibly Thirsk?

Hi Saar
I've been watching Tvvv - will have a look for you - watch this space

I can't find anything vaguely close - except the first one I gave you. Do you have the reference for John that you found in 1851? I can't even find it. If I can look at that, it may give me some searching ideas. When was Ann born? I can't find her either?

Found John (Ibetson) in the 1851 census index for Thirsk - age down as 23 and with Katherine aged 21 born Kirby Wiske. Don't have full reference but Folio is 294
In 1861 he was living in Newsham near Kirby Wiske age down as 35 and surname spelt Hibbison. Wife Catherine aged 32 was with him together with children Ellen, Elizabeth, James, Martha and Catherine.
But don't know anything about Ann except that she had 5 children baptised at Feixkirk.
When John married at Felixkirk in 1849 he was living in Boltby which is not far from Thirlby, the small village that he gave as his birthplace in 51, 61 and 71. (He died in 1880)
Cheers

Hi Mary
No wonder I had a few problems - 1851 I found John Pbetson - but the birthplace etc was correct - I should have found him before. Always tricky when the first letter changes. I'll keep looking :) - Will attempt to learn about Yorkshire - I have one relative from Cawood - but left there in 1767 :)
This is the reference for John & Katherine 1851
HO107/2371 Fol 294 page 39 - in case you didn't have all the details - living at St James Green, both Ag Labs - and the I does look like a P :)

I think this may be him - but unfortunately doesn't help with the rest of the family ( will keep looking :)

He is working for a farmer (so fits with ag lab later). Address is Skipton Hill, Thirlby (North Riding) HO107/1235/17 Folio 1 Page 6

John Weightman 60 Farmer
Mary do 55

Dear Trish
Yes that's him - brilliant. I'm so grateful. I was pretty sure he would't be with his family - they were sent off to work when they were so young.
Ibetson is not a very common surname in that part of the world (which is where I grew up)and it should be fairly easy to find them. But it seems to be spelled differently in every census entry and that makes it much harder.
Many thanks

Hi Mary
Glad I found him :) :) - it teaches me how to search when I have a tricky one - there seem to be alot of Ibetson's in the West Riding - I started using Parloc to work out where the parishes were located :) .
I haven't had any joy with the others - but will keep browsing & get back to you if I find anyone.

Many thanks for the help.
Yes there are a lot of Ibbetsons in the West Riding but not so many in my part of the world. (Well North Yorkshire is a very rural area and there just aren't that many people)
On the IGI the only Ann baptised at around the right time and place was an Ann Ibbitson baptised Helmsley in 1786. But it is always possible that the Ann who had the 5 children at Thirlby was a widow. So nothing much to go on really.
Cheers

I have just come across this thread and note you refer to John's 1849 marriage certificate. I'm fairly sure his wife Catherine Pearson was my relative - was her father's name John Pearson by any chance? If so, would be interested to know the other details, eg date, place, witnesses.
John Pearson was my 2x Gt Grandfather, and I descend from Catherine's younger brother William.
