Title: Bitton families
Post by: annieRN on Thursday 29 June 06 15:40 BST (UK)
This is a useful site for the Bitton area but has anyone managed to contact them.  I have family from the area and have sent several E. mails with no success.

Some of my families are from Bitton and are included on that site.  What familes are you interested in?

Dear Pat,

My father came from Kelston which is the next village.  His name was James Wilton and I have traced the family back to Swinford in 1805 and Joseph Wilton.  He also had an uncle Christopher Wilton who ran the Swan at Swinford. I really wanted to know if I was related to the Bitton Wilton's.  There was a family rumour that we were related to the Bush family and associated with the Bush and Wilton iron foundry.

I have tried E.mailing the site a couple of times and have not had a response.  My great grandmother was landlady of the crown at Kelston.

Thanks

            Anne

It's strange that you should talk about a family rumour about a connection with the BUSH family because my family, LONG, also thought that - not that I've been able to substantiate it .... yet!
The nearest I've got to that was a sandpit owned by a Samuel LONG who claimed it was "superior yellow moulding sand for brass, copper & iron foundries"

Sorry that you haven't heard back - You might try this address to get to the site -

The last I heard (27th July) was that

"I'm happy to say that we're in the process of making updates/additions to the BittonFamilies site -- particularly by adding some new Names and Researchers. Clare and I are collecting/arranging/posting the information,
but the end result is a community collaboration.

It will take us a while to get everything caught up, so please keep checking"

These are the names as of July 27th
ANDREWS BAGGRIDGE BALLARD BARNES BATEMAN BERTRAM BRAIN BRIGHT BRITON BROWN BRYANT BUSH/BUSHE BUTLER CATER COATES CRATES COSTER DORE ENGLAND
FRANKHAM FUDGE GERRISH GREEN GULLY HAINS
HANCOCK HARRIS HAYMAN HIGNELL HYDEN HOPES ILES JEFFERIES KIBBLE LAPHAM LEONARD LEWIS LONG LOVELL MEERE MILSOM MONKS NAISH NICHOLLS OLDS PARKER PARSONS PASSMORE PAYNTER PRIGG ROGERS
RICH SARGENT SHORT SPICER STONE SUMPTION
THOMPSON TORRANCE WEBB WEST WILLIAMS WILLIS WILMOT

So it seems that they have been very busy. I've not come across the surname WILTON but I see that in 1841 there were quite a few in Kelston.

I had lunch in the Crown at Kelston last year - not much help for you I'm afraid - but the food was good!

One of my family was so fond of Kelston that he named his two houses in London "Kelston" after the family home - perhaps he frequented the public houses run by your family there.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Pat

Perhaps, when you are ready, you might have some information to give to the Bitton Families web page.  It all comes from people like us with a common interest.
At what date were your ancestors in  Bitton?

Pat

They vary, but mostly around 1800-1880s.  Leah Dent & I share the same ancestors so the info she has provided is probably the same as what I have but I would be delighted to add to it if possible.  cheers, Margaret.

Thankyou for the Stringer link.  I had a reply back which seems to confirm the link.  She said she had got my E.mails and had been replying via the site.  They may have had a problem as I had not received anything.

When I was a girl the local manhole covers had Bush and Wilton on them so not very glamorous. I will have to try to find one for my family history book. I think I would have prefered a sandpit.

:Hello to all who have mentioned the Bush family from Bitton. My ancestor from Bitton was George Bush who lived at The Grange, he was born in 1654 and married to a Susannah. He died in 1722, his son James who married Elizabeth Evans from Bitton is my line. Elizabeth was the daughter of a John/James/Edmund Evans and Joyce Guning.
I would be interested to hear from anyone with a link to any of those families.

Names I am interested in from the Gloucestershire and Somerset areas are: Bush, Guning, Strange, Evans, Packer, Kitley, Ffernfolde, Bishop.

Hello All

My hubby has family connections to Bitton via the Bush clan.

Henry Ellacombe Bush b. 1826 married Eliza Hicks
Henry's father John Naish Bush b. 1797 married Marcia Ford
John's father John Bush b. 1772 married Mary Thompson
John's father Samuel Bush b. 1741 married Rachael Naish.

Henry, John, John and Samuel were all blacksmiths and all this info came from the bittonfamilies site.

I'm stuck at Samuel at the moment, but if I can make the link then the family is traced back to 1309!!  This particular info came from the LDS site.

Also have Bishop in the family tree but they're from Tewkesbury at the moment.

Regards, Jamys

Hello All,

I've just discovered that I have Bitton connections too.  I have Young, Olds and Hopes - so far.

Mine are connected, by marriage, to families of Parker, Herbert, Newman, and Chambers from other villages in the area.

Hi Maggiev [Cousin]

I too am descended from Henry Price & Elizabeth Cox through Annie Agnes who was my Great Grandmother & married Walter Green Veal. Her sister Emily Elizabeth married Walter's brother George Charles Veal & they all moved to Wales.

I have very little knowledge about Edmund Cox except that he came from Wiltshire. How are you getting on with the Price & Green sides??

Great to hear from you

Kismet,
I was interested to see the name of Parker in your list, were they the Parkers of Upton Cheyney, they had some way back connection to my lot, the Bush family of Bitton.

Just another query - does anyone have any Rosewell's in their family tree in the Bitton, Mangotsfield, or even Siston area, it has been suggested to me that Susannah who married George Bush of The Grange in Bitton around the 1690's, could have been a Rosewell.
The Rosewell's married into the Parkers of Upton Cheyney.
They were all well-off families, I do not know where the money went because I have to work for a living!

I had completely forgotten about this posting, which I believe dates back to 2007!   :-[

Since that time I have discovered that my Parker family were actually Packers - and pinmakers too.

But, I am also connected to Olds, Young, Hopes, Sumption, Nurse, Francomb.

Hello everyone I do hope that you have a great Christmas break. I am also connected to the Bitton families mainly Cantle and Hall ancestors.  ;) I am still trying to find when John Cantle Jnr. (who was married to Dinah Hall in 1768 at St. Mary's Bitton) passed away, it must have been later than 1811 as he is not with his wife Dinah. :'( Once again Happy Christmas to you all that work so hard in helping others.  ;)

Regards,
Janet
