Hi
Sarah Young married William Bushby in West Tarring 20 May 1801. Another Sarah Young married William Long also in West Tarring in 1806.
I'm trying to establish which Sarah was the daughter of James Young & Elizabeth French and thought maybe the burial records might help? Sarah Long fits better with the birth dates I had but other family connections have their money on the Bushby connection.
I believe Sarah Bushby died 6/8/1848 West Tarring (although there are a couple of other possibilities as well). I don't have a death date for Sarah Long yet.
Any clues greatly appreciated!
Thanks, Jane

Hi
Thought I'd throw in a few thoughts for what they are worth - just ignore if they are of no use!!!
Presumably you have the birth of 'your' Sarah Young, dtr of James and Elizabeth and are trying to trace her forwards, as it were. When/where was she born?
Then she becomes either Sarah Bushby or Sarah Long.
Do you know anything about your Sarah's siblings? for example if your Sarah had a sister Henrietta who married a Fred Bloggs, and one of the witnesses at one of the Sarah's marriages was a Henrietta Bloggs, that would be evidence to make you think that was the right marriage (not proof, but evidence).
If Sarah Bushby was still around in 1848, have you found her, and also possibly Sarah Long, on the 1841 census? Is Sarah Long on the 1851 census (will be easier as will have place of birth). This wont necessarily help identify which is yours, unless you are lucky and she is living with a brother or sister that you have already establishd.
Are there children of the Long marriage and the Bushby marriage? If so does one family rather than the other use Christian names that you have found regularly in your family?
There must be a birth around of the other Sarah Young, the one that isnt yours. Might be worth finding that to see what names the other parents have, and her siblings too. You are likely to find that the 2 Sarah Youngs are cousins, and their dads are brothers, and both families use the same range of names for the children. In which case I think it unlikely you will ever be able to sort out which marriage is which! Unless it gives father's name in the parish marriage records, which I dont think it does.
Gravestones may help - there is a gravestone for my John and Elizabeth EDmonds and they helpfully listed all there children on it, even if not actually buried there, including the girls with their married names. So, if you can scout round W Tarring graveyard or find transcriptions of any gravestones you may come up with something.
Burial records will probably just give the name i.e Sarah Long and Sarah Bushby, but no record of their parents if they died as adults, married.
Another idea is if you have the death of Sarah's dad, James Young, to see if he left a will, in which case he may refer to his daughter, Sarah Long or Bushby as the case may be. I've found wills, though few and far between amongst my predominantly ag lab ancestors, a great source for finding married names of daughters.
Think that is all my ideas!

Thanks lizdb - a few new angle to explore.
"My" Sarah was third child of John & Elizabeth Young (nee French b1761) c 9/04/1786 Durrington. No witness recorded on the Long marriage and Frances Bushby for the other (mother or sister?).
Sarah #2 was probably the daughter of John & Rebecca Young christened West Tarring 27 APR 1783 (Batch # C026299)
John Young deserted his family and was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond and leaving his family a charge on the parish. I have no birth or death details and have not found a will.
Sarah Bushby has been found in the 1841 census but not 1851 - which makes the 1848 death likely. But I hadn't yet thought to check for Sarah Long!

I'm in Australia so scouting around the West Tarring graveyard is not feasible!

I read with interest your mention of a Frances Bushby, West Tarring. From what I have researched I am descended from Barbara Bushby - daughter of Frances and Francis Bushby of West Tarring. She was born in 1817. She married Edward Snewing and had my g grandmother, Jane Emma Snewing who married Joseph Lewis. Are these the same Bushbys mentioned in your posts. I would love to find out more about the Bushby family.

Further to my earlier post - I have found the death for Sarah Bushby registered in the July Quarter for 1848 in Worthing with reference 7 363. This is the correct district for West Tarring. Hope this helps.

Hi rozee
Although its not my direct line, I'm in touch with a couple of Bushby descendants in Australia. If you'd like to PM me your contact details I can pass them on. I'll check where Fances/Francis fits in when I get home tonight.
Cheers, Jane

Hi,
I live near Worthing so if you need someone to have a nosey around Tarring Cemetry I can go and look for you. If you don't mind waiting a while as I'm in Australia until mid July! :)

Dear Legs
That would be great - my interest in that part of Sussex extends mainly to the Bushby and Snewin families. Funny thing you mentioning about coming from Worthing - my Lewis side finished their days there - Barbara Bushby (daughter of Frank and Frances Bushby) married Edward Snewin and their daughter, Jane Emma Snewin, married Joseph Lewis (from Burbage Wilts - Inland Revenue Insp) and one of their sons was Cyril Lewis, my grandfather. He married Rose White from London (Hammersmith). I have found descendants of Rose's sister and where do they now live - Worthing. Small world. Edward Snewin, my g g grandfather, wrote a history of Worthing - it would be in your local library - I managed to buy a copy from the UK. Anything you find would be appreciated - thanks for the offer. I live in Sydney.

Hi Rozee,
As soon as I'm home and ove the jetlag I'll whizz over there for you. I actually live in a small village just west of Worthing and Tarring is barely a 10 minute drive.
So shall I just look for any evidence of Bushby and Snewin families for you? Could you give me any first names and approx dates so I can look in the corret part of the cemetery for you.
I probably have the book your gr gr grandfather wrote!!
If you PM me your email address at some point I can then email you anything I may find.

Hi Legs
The world is indeed small - I live in Perth! When are you heading home?
Rozee - another connection of mine lives in Durrington and has sent me a couple of Bushby photos from West tarring. I'll send them to you.

Hi Rozee
I have a large family tree of Bushby’s including Francis & Frances going back to about 1480..!!. However I didn’t know about the Snewin family. Did you know that some of the Bushby’s ended up in Tasmania? My Gt Grandmother was also a Sussex Bushby (Marion). If you PM your email address I’ll send you my Bushby ‘timeline’ chart (plus lots of gossip!).

Hi Legs,
Could I make a cheeky request? When you amble around Tarring Cemetery, could you keep a lookout for Fanny Faulkner Linberry (died 1883)?
Best wishes

Hello Rozee & Others...
I am a descendant of Francis Bushby's brother, William Bushby. I have quite a bit on the Bushby line and have recently been in contact with David Mason who is a cousin of yours. I am assuming you know who I am speaking of. He has gathered up quite a bit on your line.
George Bushby, son of William Bushby and Sarah Young, emigrated to Australia with the Henty Family in 1829. The group abandoned their settlement in Western Australia and moved on to Tasmania. Most Bushby folks in Tas are related to George or his brother, Charles Bushby.
Would be happy to share anything I have on this family and hope you can help me with info I don't have.
Best wishes.

Hi All
Have worked it all out now - the Sarah Young who married William Bushby was definitely the daughter of John Young and Rebecca Weller they married in West Tarring on the 12th Oct 1768. Their Sarah was baptised on the 27th April 1783. Age wise this makes more sense.
So my Sarah Young did marry William Long in July 1806.
This gives me another question I wonder if John Young was the brother of my Sarah's father James.

Hi Anne
It would be great if we could tie both Sarah's into the tree! I've never been able to find much info about James. Maybe John will be easier to trace?
If they were brothers it seems likely that their mother's name would be Sarah as both have daughters of that name.
Cheers, Jane

Hi
I have a family story that my ancestor John Miles possible passenger listing
MILLS JOHN MR 19 AUG 1853 HEMPSYKE B 48 4
(Miles listed as MILLS!)
Immigration to Victoria from British Ports
Index to Unassisted Inward Passenger Lists
B Fiche 048 Page 002
Ship: "HEMPSYKE"
Arrived Portland.VIC. abt 1856.
Worked for Edward HENTY at "Muntham Station" VIC.abt 1856.
John MILES late of Angmering, Sussex.ENG.
Came out to Portland VIC. Australia from SSX. ENG. with brother Francis about Feb. 1855/56. They were in charge of sheep for Edward HENTY at Muntham Station for 2 years.
Can anyone assist whether the the Miles brothers did work for the Henty family or marry into the family?
Cheers

Hi Velcro,
Do you have an apporx year of birth for John and Francis?
This is the only Jon Miles I can find from Angmering on the 1851 census.
Eclesden Farm, Angmering
William Miles, head, 51, farmer of 320 acres employing 8 men and 2 boys
Jane Miles, wife, 46
George Miles, son, 21
Elizabeth Miles, dau, 18
John Miles, son, 16
Edwin Miles, son, 13
Clara Miles, dau, 8,
Ann Evans, sevant, 15, house servant, born Rustington
Fanny Hipkins, servant, 13, born Littlehampton
John Milles, lodger, 16, Cig ??? Feeder, born Angmering
All the Miles family were born in Angmering except wife Jane who was born in Tarring. No sign of Francis though.
This farm was next to Water Lane, which still exists. The Farm names rings a bell, so it is probably still there too, I'll have a look when I next drive by.
The Henty Family were the 'big' family in Ferring, the next village from Angmering, (which is where I live!) They were very propserous and had a big house and owned most of the village. There is a pub named after them still in Ferring. (In fact I was there last night!!! ;) )
I can't see any obvious Miles~Henty marriages in the Worthing district.....
Hope that helps! :)

Hi
Thank you for your responce.
John Miles ch.25 Aug 1834 Ecclesden, Angmering, SSX.ENG.
Francis (Not sure if he exists???) if b. after 1828 SSX.ENG.
sons of William and Jane Miles nee Barker.
But the next generation has name a child Francis William John Miles ch 1868 Victoria
The 1851 Census is the correct family.
John being the lodger is also their son. Is it because he is working that he is down as a lodger not an occupier?
Cig Feeder?
Is this to do with cigarette making machines?
Thank you for your expertise and time.
Have an ale on me next time in the Henty pub! ;)
Cheers
Velcro
Would be interested if any Miles did have any connections with the Henty family?
-
Have a look at this site http://www.angmeringvillage.co.uk/
It is brilliant and includes photos of the Miles family.
Sorry can't help with any Henty connection in Australia though

I would guess a 16 yr old lodger on a farm in the Sussex countryside in 1851, would be a PIG feeder, rather than anything to do with cigarattes!
-
http://www.ferringvillage.co.uk/history.htm
This is the Ferring Village website, it has lots of info on the Henty's and there was aslo a Miles family in the village too.
-
Lizdb is right - I've checked the page image and the word is "Pig", although the initial letter does look to my modern eye like an upper case "C". But, on the same page are the places "Chichester" and "Patching" - comparison with these removes any doubt.
But the lodger's surname reads "Mills" not "Milles".

I am sure that in my files somewhere I have details of Ferring or Angmering Miles. If I can find them I will get back here. Miles was a loose connection to me as it was just a sister in laws boyfriends surname.
-
Hi
Any extra info would be appreciated but I think the Ferring Miles are not related to the Angmering Miles family.
Cheers
