Has anyone done any work on this family who lived in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire in the 18th century? There seem to have been hundreds of them living there in the 1740s-1750s. Would be grateful if anyone can offer any help

I came across the following in my travels:
Ayrshire 1855 Births - RICCARTON:
Elizabeth NIVEN, (b 2nd Nov. 1855, Hurlford)
Parents: William NIVEN (43yrs, Collier) & Ann FOULDS (36yrs). (Place of Birth, for both - St. Quivox, Ayr). Marriage: 1835, Johnstone, Renfrewshire.

Dalrymple, Ayrshire, Old Parish Registers - MARRIAGES:
1791, June 16th. - John NIVEN in the Parish of Maybole & Jane GREGG, in this Parish, were married at Kirkton.
1804, December 25th. - Samuel HUTCHISON & Jean NIVEN, both in this Parish, were married.

I am particularly interested in a lady born in 1724 in Kirkoswald who married Robert Campbell from Monkton and Prestwick in 1744. She was Jullian or Gillian Niven, and according to the OPR her father was James Niven. No mother's name is given.
I am wondering if she was related to the Margaret Niven who married Samuel Brown (cousin of the poet Robert Burns) in 1765.
Can you help with this?
I am also researching Campbell, Tyrie, Tod, Bowman, Erskine in St Quivox and Ayr.

There are many Nivens in Kirkoswald, however I cannot find anyone with that name, sorry.

Jullian Niven b 27/5/1724 at Ardlochan was the youngest of the family of James (died 1751) and Margaret (died 1733) Niven. She had a brother Robert (b 1713) who married Margaret Ross in June 1740. Their daughter, Margaret, was born 3 months later 28/9/1740. She married Samuel Brown, a brother of Agnes Brown, Robert Burns's mother.

I am trying to find the parents of Robert Niven who married Jane Campbell in Dailly 28/4/1785. Jane parents were Andrew and Margaret Campbell. Robert may have come from another parish

I am interested in the Niven family from Kirkoswald as one of my gt grandmothers was Sarah Niven, daughter of John Niven, smithwright born 1756.

Your Sarah Niven b 26/10/1756 is in my Family Tree. I have no record of descendants of Sarah of which I am pleased you are one. Sarah was the youngest of the family of John Niven (b 1697) & Joan Gray. I am descended from John's brother, Robert (b 1713, Ardlochan) married Margaret Ross. Family records say that John & Robert's parents were James Niven (d 9/2/1751) and Margaret ? (b 1679 d 13/2/1733). Do you have more information?

Great to hear from you; yes I have lots of information on the Niven family.
Sarah Niven married James Meikle 1785 Edinburgh. So far I have only found 2 children, John Meikile Jan 1788 Bothwell (from SP) and James Meikle born abt 1795 Bothwell according to the censuses I have been able to track him in (I have so far found no birth/bapt for him on SP :() I am descended from James Meikle 1795 who married Elisabeth Low.
If you would like any further information please do not hesitate to let me know and I will be only too happy to share my info with you. I am sure, like you, in your research you have found that the name Meikle has been spelt numerous ways over time, as has Niven!
Perhaps you would be kind enough to give me some of your information on your side of the family please?

I tried to attach my Family Tree of which there are many worksheets (Excel) You would see me on the 1st one Gordon Drynan Niven. Sarah Niven is on FT2 Ardlochan - 3rd worksheet).
Rootschat prevents the sending of Excel documents.

John's parents were James Niven d 1752 and Margaret ? (b 1679 d 1733)
