Title: Dunk family of East Sussex
Post by: Chota on Monday 25 October 04 16:42 BST (UK)
I have traced my Dunk family back to John ( and Mary) Dunk supposedly born in Hellingly in 1696.  He does not seem to appear in the Hellingly parish register, nor does an appropriate Mary.  Their son, William does appear (b. 1722) Is there anyone researching this branch of the Dunk family that might know where John was really born?

Hi Chota

Welcome to  Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards

Whilst you are here, we will try and help further your research into your Sussex ancestors.

Saying that though, it is going to be difficult to help you back in 1696 other than the baptism registers for Hellingly or surrounding area.

Looking through the East Sussex Marriage Index, cant find any Dunks marrying in Hellingly before c1734 - do you know where his parents married?

That would be the first port of call for his baptism

Hi Chota
I am not researching this particular line of DUNK genealogy, so I can't be of help BUT 'I know a man who can'.
Regrettably he is not on the 'net, but I wrote to him and I got lots of info. on my particular enquiry. He maintains a one name collection on the name of Dunk, which I think he has been researching for years. If you are willing to write, get in touch and I will forward his name and address, he's a mine of information or alternatively I know he is a member of Hastings and Rother FHS, you could try them.
Regards

I'm finally getting back into family history research after a long break (starting off the new generation of the family wreaks havoc with finding about the older generations!!!  ::) )

Don't know if this will be of any use to you, or other researching DUNKs ...

Thank you Cheryl.  I  already have some of the information on your site  but there was enough new there to help.  How can I get a copy of the will of William Dunk of Dallington?  I suspect it holds the key to a few of my "mysteries"

There are a lot of early wills online on the documenstonline site for the PRO.   They are fairly cheap and easy to download   http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/
There are 20 Dunk wills on it - several from Sussex.

Thanks Andrea. William Dunk of Dallington is not there but another promising one is.
I will see if the archive holding the  W.Dunk will can make me a copy.

I'm new to the site & have been browsing through the sussex pages. I'm tracing the Lovell family & have a Sarah Lovell who married a William Dunk in 1812. I've not followed them through as my interest stems from her brother. But I have a note that they has 2 children Caroline in 1814 & robert in 1819.  Any help?
