Hope you don't mind ... used a bit of poetic license  here ....  and got rid of an uninspiring background ::)..  haven't  done a great job ..but I'm sure there are some folk on here who will do a  really great job for you !

Hi Alan,
              Just out of interest, can you rescan it using all the same
settings but in colour mode not Greyscale. I want to compare the
results.

Wow thank you all for your great efforts,
I have tried to enhance this picture  many times before and made quite a good job of it apart from the face, I retouched the face OK but it just did not look like her, now at last it does and spot  on too, I bow to your superior skill knowledge.
Mum is 82 now a will be thrilled to see a photo that we thought was lost to us.

              I have left the "S" that is chalked on the wall
because I think it might have some significance. If you
think it is distracting just say and I will remove it.
