Can anyone do anything with my this picture of my uncle
Ronald Thomas Jones. Bothe he and his brother were both killed in WW2. This is the only picture that we have of him.
Thank you in advance.

Hi Roadrunner
I hope you don't mind me having a go at your uncles picture, it is my first effort and I am not sure how I repost the picture, so this may not work. I don't know if it much improvement, but I didn't want him to get a little plastic head, I really have heaps to learn yet.
Fingers crossed

thanks for your effort. We are both in the same boat. I am also learning, but somehow some things are beyond me.
I tried cleaning up this picture, but the clone tool and patch tool did not seem to make a difference. I am still having problems with the clone tool.

I know just what you mean, I am having trouble with everything. But am perservering. I did this using Vikki Hansens Layer Masks on the RetouchPRO forum. It's quite fun when you eventually manage to get something right isn't it?

I am not sure that I have managed to get anything right yet but at least can clean the image and I am learning.
I did buy katrin E book which helps, but still does not help me really know how to really use the clone tool. I have had a great deal of help from the folks at Roots, most are way above me but at least they try.
Do you know yet how to save your layer masks to post on the web because I do. I had someone tell me. On roots how do I save layers like this. It helped a lot.

Hey Joy
What do you mean?
Do you know yet how to save your layer masks to post on the web because I do.
Does that mean how I got your picture back on the site? Because I winged it and I don't know if I could do it again. If that's what you mean, please tell me where to find the page on Roots so I can learn that too. I am saving everything I can, but do not get to spend enough time practising to really take it all in.
Thanks Joy

Without trying to complicate things, may i make a suggestion.
First of all set up your current project with all your layers and the picture exactly as you want to see it.
2, press print screen on your keyboard.
3.press ctrl+N.............opens up a dialogue box
4.press okay..............opens a new document
5.press ctrl+V............pastes your picture and layers into new document
6.view fullsize and crop to suit your needs
7.. new image as whatever you want
hope this is of some help rather than confusion
Denn
You can use this to post a copy of your work and progression on roots or anywhere. It has helped me a lot

Had a bit of a go at him, :)
not much better though
-
Thank you, as you say it is not easy

And Another,
Tomkin

Thanks Tomkin
I wish i had another photo of him but I am afraid I do not.
I need to do something with his uniform, his boots and the rest.
I appreciate your effort
Joy

Joy some of the markings on his lighter ankle & boot is the word 'To' in the greeting, I didn't know if you wanted that kept or not, ;)
Yvonne

Hi Joy ... as all the other efforts have Kept the handwriting ... heres an option without it ... and a sepia look ... :) ;)

thanks for your effort. You did a great job. I do not really care about the writing. What I needed was to be able to see Ronald Better. You managed this
Joy
-
Hi Joy,
I'm sorry lass, but if you wanted the writing removing, why
didn't you say so? as far as I was concerned it was HIS writing to HIS
Mother. I know that you have it on the original but my crystal ball is
cloudyn at the moment,
Tomkin ;D ;D ;D
-
Tomkin
I never mentioned the problem of the writing because I just did not think of it. All I wanted was a better pic of him so that I can reproduce it for the family. The original ( the only pic of him) will stay intact.
I cannot dictate to people how they restore a photo because they are doing me a kindness
Joy
-
Hi Joy,
We are not talking about dictating. We just want to do a good job for you.
You just tell us what you want girl and we will do what we can. The more you specify
your requirements the better.
All the best,
Tomkin, ;D ;D ;D ( AKA Grumpy )

As this is the only picture of Ronald. I would like to make it clear, maybe give it a little color and do something with the background.
I have tried to color but I am not yet proficient enough and I messed it up.
Again thanks for your effort

Hi Joy,
It is a difficult photo. It's almost like a newspaper cutting. PrueM
would be able to tell us what the "dotted effect" is, although I have seen it on
other postings. I'll have another try tomorrow when my eyes have rested.
Must go for an eye test.Overdue.
Regards,
Tomkin

Thanks for your kindness
I think the photo was taken in Europe maybe for a newspaper as Ronald was a dispatch rider through enemy lines and was killed that way.
I would love to see a nice pic of him
Have a good rest

Hi Joy,

I would appreciate anything that you can do with this picture. I have only two pictures of my Grt Uncles both killed in WW2. This is the worst, but people are willing to help.
I am just learning so made all sorts of mistakes
