Title: BEER family
Post by: leaf on Wednesday 14 June 06 14:56 BST (UK)
Hello everyone hunting for Devon folk.

I thought it was worth asking for help with my search.

I am looking for any further information about RICHARD BEER born about 1805 in Holbeton.  He married JANE who was born around 1808 in Newton Ferrers.  They had the following children born in approximate years:-

JANE 1829
ELIZA 1832
RICHARD 1834
JOHN 1837
WILLIAM G. 1840
SARAH MARY 1842 married James Smith (b. 1839, Ross, Herefordshire) in 1866, Plymouth
CATHERINE 1845 married Francis Montgomery (b. 1837, Ireland)

I have got Richard on census records from 1841 to 1861 and he was still alive in 1866 working as a labourer. In 1861 he was living in Coburg Street Plymouth.

He had died by 1871 as Jane is then a widow.

I haven't found any birth, marriage or death information for him yet.  Someone looked in the Newton Ferrers records for me without luck and another person checked Revelstoke without finding him.

If I neeed to put any further information in please let me know.

Thank you in anticipation  :)

Hello Annie CJ  :)

Thank you ever so much for the information.  I don't know how I missed Richard on the Death index, maybe it was a late night research session after one to many Beers  :-\

I'm relatively new to this still so hadn't used the family search site.  It looks as if your help has found at least 2 more family members for me.  (That's after finding one for me in Herefordshire too  :) )

I'm going to investigate the marriage you listed a bit further.

Once again thank you  :D

Hello all,

Thanks to the help I've recieved so far I've moved along a bit in my search.

I've got that John BEER was born about 1760 in Holbeton and married Ann REVEL (born about 1763 in Holbeton)  in 1875.

Thay had the following children all apparently christened in Holbeton.

Agnes b. 1786
Elizabeth b. 1789
Lydia b.1792
William Revel b. 1794
Sarah b. 1797
John b. 1799
Dianna b. 1802
Richard b. 1805
Thomas b. 1810

I'm just wondering what would be the next best step to take after getting confirmation certificates for the above.

It would be nice to fill in some more details on the family, so I expect a trip to the Devon record office is required.

Hello all,

I don't know if anyone can help me further I would like to order a copy of RICHARD BEER and JANE  ???  marriage certificate, but I can't yet as I don't have a date or place for their marriage! I'm probably missing something obvious as I'm still fairly new to this. (Further details about Richard and Jane are in my first post) I have tried to find birth details for Richard and Jane's children, if I could get a certificate for their birth it would have Jane's maiden name on it, however again I can't seem to find anything.

Any help or ideas welcome.

Thank you,

Hi Leaf,

I'm afraid it looks like Richard and Jane would have married before registration came in, looking at the birth dates of their children I would have thought they'd have married just before Jane was born in 1829.  Registration did not come into place until 1837, so you won't be able to order a marriage certificate.

Therefore you will have to investigate the local parish records.  I would begin looking in the parishes where Richard, Jane and their children were born.

I did an IGI search (as I expect you have done already) but couldn't find anything for their marriage.

It might even be worth googling for the parishes and there might be contact details for prople who know more.  Also try contacting your local LDS Church, they can order films of the records you are interested in (for a small charge) and you can search them yourself.

Best of Luck
Legs

Hi Legs,

Thank you for that, at least I know I won't be able to order a certificate now, another lesson learned  :)

Yes I did look on IGI for their marriage.

A few people have looked for me and apparently they weren't married in Newton Ferrers, or Holbeton between 1820 and 1830 or Revelstoke!

Has anyone with better local knowledge than me got any ideas where to try or which records to view through the LDS?

Thanks,

leaf

Hi Selena,

There could be a connection as the Beers did have lots of offspring, but I am not aware of one as yet.

I'm still no further forward with the Beers than my last post on here  ::)

Hi Selena,

I have a William Beer born in 1839 in Buckland Brewer, in my family tree, his parents are William Beer born c.1812 and Hannah born about 1811.
Their children are:
Mary born 1837 (my ancestor)
William born 1839
Maria born 1840
Robert born 1844
and Charlotte born 1850

Does this sound like the same family you have?

Hello...this is my first post here..please excuse me if I get it wrong.  I want to reply to "leaf".  The Richard Beer she/he has born Holbeton 1805 is my 3x great grandfather.  I have info from the censuses and certificates too for his son Richard, and I am very keen to get together with "leaf".
I am aware of Montgomery, Smith and Sutherland connections..also White and Gibb.  I am inclined to think Richard senior married Jane Lethbridge but have no confirmation of that.  Please get back to me via rootschat.

Good afternoon,

I've been working very hard on my Beer family.  Richard born 1834 married Mary Ann Piper of Wisborough Green, Sussex...I have them married in Ipswich and living at Oxford, Aldershot, Plumstead and Dartford through the censuses.  Their yongest daughter Melissa Maud was deaf and dumb from age 3 and ended up in Dartord Union workhouse where my grandfather Joseph was born....he then added an E to the end of the name...which confused us for a while!!

I moved to Canada from England via Australia and found some of my BEERS had reached here before me.  ;)

I have Mary Beer b 1827 or Monkleigh who married James Parker and stayed in Sherwill.

Ellen Beer b 1839 who married John Milton

James Beer b. 1847 who married Bethia Hern who went to Canada

As far as I know they were Bible Christians and moved to Ontario where I have tracked them down.

Any connections to Beer, Wonnacott, Hartnoll, Hern out there??    thx.
