Greetings from Australia on a brisk wintry afternoon.
This is a needle in a haystack request for help...
My husband's grandfather, John MacIntosh, fought in the Boer War. We would like to try to track down some information about him and his service if possible.
He was Scottish, born near North Uist. After the war we know he was living in Glasgow for that is where my father-in-law was born. Sadly, he died when he was a young man. We know so very little about him.
I would appreciate any help that might enable us to learn more about John, and his military service.
Cheers

Hi Elsie,
Sadly for your search, John MacIntosh must be a pretty common name in Scotland (not quite John Smith in England but even so.....)
You say though that he was from North Uist. I think I'm right in saying the Western Isles were traditional recruiting grounds of the Seaforth Highlanders and Cameron Highlanders?
No certainties of course, but if it were me I'd start by looking at these two regiments.

Have you tried to search British army records held at Kew in London? I have paid researchers there a modest fee to look up army records in the past. There is also a searchable database.
Another avenue is yDNA testing. I am a co-administrator of the McIntosh DNA project so send me a PM if you would like more information.

Also traditional recruiting grounds for the Lovat Scouts who were formed solely for the Boer War by Lord Lovat mainly recruiting Ghillies, Shepherds and stalkers, I think their museum is in Cameron Barracks Inverness.
