I do not know much about researching in Ireland but from what I have read on rootschat it seems there was a census every 10 years in the "1" year. I need to know if there was one for 1841 and were these only for England or for Ire. also? I need Ire.. If it exists does anyone know where on line such a census can be found? Family says ancestors came from County Cork so if it is out there I'd start w/that one. Have no idea what Town, Parish, or anything else, just "County Cork". Jenkins, John, Mary, John, Charles, Ralph, Eliza. Left for U.S. during potato famine. Father and mother (b) late 1790's to 18teens in Ire.. Kids (b) 1832 to 1842 or thereabouts. With them when first show up in New York in 1850 was a Catherine Hanson or Henson, relation unknown. Maybe to Canada before on to N.Y.. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, almost all Irish census returns up to 1851 were destroyed in 1922 and those for 1861 to 1891 were destroyed by government order (they were pulped). As compensation, the census for 1901, 1911 and I believe 1921 - but not sure, may be consulted. These, together with the survivals from previous returns for the whole of Ireland are at the National archives in Dublin

Can the surviving returns from the earlier census', particularly 1841, which are at Nat. Arc. in Dub. be accessed anywhere on line or must I write to the Nat. Arc.? The people I seek left before 1850 so later census won't help me.

I do not know of any that early that are on line - and my book on 'Tracing your Irish Ancestors' does not state if any are on line or otherwise.
But I am sure if they are, at least one of the membership of rootschat will put us right

Hi,
There are fragments of the 1821 to 1851 surviving in the National Archives -1851 for parishes in Antrim, 1841 for Killeshandara Co Cavan, 1831 for parts of Derry and fragments of 1821 for Cavan, Fermanagh, Galway, Meath and Offaly. The rest were destroyed in the 1922 fire in the registry office.
The 1861 and 1871 census was destroyed during World War I by government order for reasons of security or perhaps for wood pulp. I don't think there was a census in 1881 and 1891. The 1901 and 1911 census are available for the whole of Ireland. There was no census taken in 1921 as the country was undergoing civil war at the time!

I have since found my Jenkins came from Bray. Are there any records anywhere Before 1850 for Bray? Thanks for any help.

Bray town is in Co. Wicklow and close to the border with Co. Dublin - quite a distance from Cork... There are parish records covering the 1850s and earlier for the area. What religion were your Jenkins family ?
Some parish records for the Bray area (RC and CofI baptisms only) are available on the pay-website of the Irish Family History Foundation at : http://www.rootsireland.ie/
It might also be worth checking Griffith's valuation (a land tax survey) to see which Jenkins families were in the area at that time - although I dont see any near to Bray. The details for that area are dated around 1854.

There was no 1921 census due to the Anglo-Irish war and ensuing civil war.
There is an ongoing petition signature drive to release the 1926 census early (before 2027).

I have not seen any other of the various census fragments on line, just details of which townlands are covered.
