I have an ancestor buried in Victoria and have details of the cemetery and plot. I'm going to be really cheeky and ask if anyone living in the area would mind taking a photo for me. It would be really appreciated cos I can't see me getting over there!

Hello Cristeen,
Check out the following website www.raogk.org/bcolumbia.htm
Scrool down the list to find a volunteer for Victoria who will take a photo for
you. Follow the guidelines on the site. I have used Random Acts Of Genealogical
Kindness many times and have found them to be most helpfull.
Good luck

What was his name
-
Hi
Wow this is a blast from the past!
His name was John Steavenson and he died 14th April 1895, family lore says he died seal hunting
In 1891 he was lodging on Johnson Street, Victoria City, aged 65 and described as a gentleman
His probate states he was of Victoria, British Colombia. He left about £1500 but was estranged from his family so there may not be a headstone. I said I had details of the cemetery and plot but can't find them now :(
Thanks for any information you can provide

Hi Christine,
I have a friend that will be in that area in the next few weeks on a bit of hectic visit, but she will try to get to the cemetery for you. She has tromped through enough cemeteries with me that she should be able to locate it if she get there. Fingers crossed!
-
As you suspected, there is no gravestone. However, the groundskeeper who helped my friend find John's grave said that there may have well been one. In that era, sandstone was commonly used for headstones, but with vandalism and weather, they did not stand the test of time.
She did take a picture of his exact burial spot with the groundskeeper's log book on it, and also took a picture of John's entry in the log book (basically just his name, still spelled incorrectly). Also a picture of someone else's sandstone headstone just so you would know what it, if it ever existed, might have looked like.
To correct the spelling of the name, you would need to contact the Victoria city archives.
If you pm me your email address, I can send the pictures, and the contact info for the archives.
