Title: US Dogtags circa late 30's
Post by: Scottish2 on Wednesday 31 May 06 00:31 BST (UK)
Hi

This is a US based question. Does anyone know of a website that will break down a dogtag from the late 30's early 40's? My mom sent me one of my Grandfathers dogtags from this era and I want to understand what all the details are on it. I am guessing they would be his military number and such but want to know more. Anyone know of a website with details on breaking down dogtags from this era?

YOu are so lucky to have those. My grandparents dog tags were lost. I was able to get copies of their service records from the National Archives. Takes a ahwil but well worht the wait.

Glad to help.  I actualy used the last link after reading your message and found my Grandmothers Record in WW2.  She was a member of the Womans Army COrps. (WAC). SHe decoded messgaes in Washington DC and I have been trying to get a hold of her records. I find it intersting that she signed up.  Int he end it paid for her and my gradfather to g o to college.
