O.K. all you wizards please cast your magic spells and work out how I progress? I must be a real toad as I can’t find a solution.
I am trying to locate James Pearce’s father and mother and further back if possible!
James was born in 1811 in Fulham Middlesex and lived there all his life. Can't find a birth cert for James Pearce b 1811 in Fulham!
He married Hannah b 1808 from Hampshire prior to Jan 1836 when Francis James Pearce was born.
James and Hannah had at least 5 children Francis J, Joseph, Martha Elizabeth, Dinah Margaret and James Frederick Pearce. The last being my g grandfather.
Can't find a wedding cert for James and Hannah!
Spent lots of time at London Metropolitan Archives and the FRC. No joy yet!!!
I have found baptism records for all of the children and although three were born after 1837 I can not find any birth registration information in either Ancestry.co.uk or Freebmd nor at the FRC. So I cannot order birth certificates. - The children were all born in Fulham and lived there.
I realised that Fulham wasn't a registration district until much later and Kensington would be appropriate.
They lived in Fulham all their lives and I have found them on the 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 census. James died in 1856 aged 44 and Hannah died in 1876 aged 68 . James Pearce was a Tailor and Hannah a Charwoman..
Their children were:-
Francis James Pearce born 21/1/ 1836 and bap. 28/2/1836 Fulham Middx. (All Saints)
Joseph Pearce born 28/9/1837 and bap. 3/12/1837 Fulham Middx.
Martha Elizabeth Pearce born 12/7/1842 bap 5/10/1842 Fulham Middx.
Dinah Margaret Pearce born 9/10/1844 bap 17/11/1844 Fulham Middx.
James Frederick Pearce born 21/5/1848 bap 21/5/1852 Fulham Middx.
Dinah appeared to call herself Margaret after 30 but then I believe she married and I don’t know her married name!
This is the info. I found on the 1841 census :-
James Pearce 30 tailor born in county
Hannah " 34 not born in county - born Hampshire
Francis James Pearce 5 born in county
Joseph Pearce 3 "
living at Bridge Street, Fulham, Kensington, Middlesex
H0107/ 689/ 11
Folio 44, Page 35
All help/suggestions gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Mark

Hi
First of all - have you checked all spellings for Pearce when searching the birth registrations? If not, then that is your first move. I find it useful to put a spelling into www.familysearch.org and see what variants they bring up. You are talking of "certificates" for birth and marriage pre 1837. They did not exist. At least not as we know them today but I am sure you know that. The only record will be in the church register therefore it means a long and tedious search of each possible church but you have obviously done that at the LMA. However Hannah was from Hampshire. Have you looked there? They usually married in the bride's parish.
Have you looked for wills? They are a great source of information. Street directories?
I think the spelling variants may be the aswer.
Good luck

I realize Hannah was recorded as 34 but was James' age rounded down as it should have been in the 1841 census. In which case he could have been between 30 and 34 and so born between 1806 and 1811.
Could they have been married in Hampshire at Hannah's home? Does 1851 give a better lead where that might be? If you can find her maiden name, you might be able to locate her parents in 1841 which is another possible location for the marriage.
The other place to look, if you can find it is the banns book the Fulham church, which might tell you where James was married. Of course if they were married by licence then you are looking for the Allegation in the diocese records.

1851 is not very clear but Hannah's place of birth looks like Barkley Hants. She is 43. No idea where that might be.

1861 she is 53 and from Berclere, Hants. 1871 aged 63 she is from Burclear. Could it be Burghclere? South of Newbury but in Hampshire.

Andrea,
Thank-you so much for your efforts. I have checked Hannah out as much as I can but I came to the same conclusion as you it could be Burghclere and to the enumerator sounded like all the spellings that you have found. Of course without a wedding cert. I can't find what her surname is or her parents or where they lived.
Without children birth certificates I can't find her maiden name either.
So unless I can find where James and Hannah were married it looks like I will remain a toad!!!!
I do so hate these spells!! Any magic out there!
Seriously though many thanks for your help and if anyone has any bright ideas don't hesitate to suggest them.
Besst Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark
Have you thought of writing direct to the Fulham register office and asking them to search? If they looked for Martha and Dinah it is not a very long span to search as you have the dates and they might find them under a mistranscription more easily that we can. I have been looking for Dinah or Margaret and failed!
I wonder where Francis is in 1841? If you can find him he may be with relatives.

Andrea,
No I haven't thought of that! I will search the internet for the Fulham office and get writing.
As for Francis in 1841 he is home with mum and dad in Fulham aged 5. Later he moves to Putney and marries Mary Cole on June 26th 1859 and has 4 kids of his own.
I am trying to work out where these Pearces came from? I suspect the S/W or Berkshire but also strong contingent in Norfolk. However at present Fulham is as far as I get.
Many many thanks for your hard work. I can see you like toads!!
Cheers,
Mark

Don't know why I thought he was not there - reading it too quickly!
