Hello-My g-g-grandfather's name was ANDREW McKENZIE BROWN. He lived in Kirknewton/East Calder parish, and married Ann Knox of Carnbee Parish there in 1866. They later emigrated to U.S.A. Andrew had a sister, JEAN BROWN. We have no information on her at all. I found this man:
"Sergeant Andrew McKenzie BROWN (297)
5th Gordon Highlanders
Born at Coxhal (Aberdeenshire). Enlisted at New Machar
KIA on 31st July 1916
Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, Somme, France. Grave XI.D.26"
Obviously, the name is exactly the same. Our Andrew's grandson shared the name as well. I am hoping to find this man's ancestors, and perhaps a link to our lost Jean. She did not emigrate, and so far as I know he never saw her again. Any information on this or other McKenzie Browns would be greatly appreciated.

I've had a quick look and found two marriage entries for example:
George McKenzie Brown marriage 19 Nov 1864 in Aberdeen
John MacKenzie Brown marriage 20 Oct 1871 Midlothian
Just another pointer, to help people help you further, it would also be good if you posted any more details you have on your gg grandfather such as parents' names and his birth year/place.

This young man won the Military Medal and was recorded as the son of James & Margaret Brown. He was 25 when he died. I would think that you might find him on the 1901 census.
McKenzie may have been his mother's maiden name which is why it does not appear in his parents' names.

Yes, John McKenzie Brown is a relative. I will search the parents listed, and I thank you for your prompt replies.

I have looked at the middle name index, and was amazed to find so many McKenzie Browns, and also so many Penman Browns. Our family has a long history of using the mother's name as a middle name. I hope this helps, and appreciate all information.

From 1841 FreeCen at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl, this looks like it could be John and Frances following their marriage in 1838:
BROWN John age 20 Coal Miner b. Midlothian
BROWN Francis 25 b. Midlothian
BROWN John age 1 b. Midlothian
Address: Loanhead South Side Town, Lasswade-Midlothian
In case you are not familiar with the 1841 census, ages for adults were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5. Children up to age 15 were supposed to be accurate age. As always with census ages, use as a guide, specially the 1841 census.

Thank you-It is almost certainly them. I wonder if 'Jean' may have been John, or if John perhaps died. It happened so often then. I will look into it. I am amazed at the response time to my queries here-you have given me more information in one day and places to look for more than in a year at rootsweb and familysearch.org. I didn't know where to start. UK has so much better information, I think. Of course, we only have 200 years to work with...

Going back to one of your original questions! I can't easily see any track of a daughter Jane for John and Fanny, but I have found a daughter (H)Ellen Patterson Brown. Have you got details on her?

I do have a lot of questions, don't I?! Sorry for the bother. Her name was Jean Brown, rather than Jane. And as for Helen Patterson Brown, Frances Penman (Fanny) married John Brown. Her parents were...David Penman and Helen Patterson! I looked up naming patterns, and it seems they did tend to follow them, which is good for my sake. Thank you so much. Where did you find Hel(l)en Patterson Brown? Is it a link you have already sent me? I was up until after 1 a.m. last night, going through the free census link. I am so grateful, you've no idea.

The family is quite difficult to find on the censuses (the 1841 was quite straightforward!). Can't see where they are in 1851. I have found Fanny and Andrew living together in 1861, Fanny is showing as widow.
Now, Ellen (not sure when she was born, her age seems to change by census but somewhere between 1842-47) reported Fanny's death in 1898 in Glasgow City, which is where I picked up her trail.
She was obviously called after Fanny's mother. This is her marriage entry on IGI:

Marriage: 31 DEC 1869 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
These are some of her children, but she had a number more by the 1881 census:

2. MARGARET PENMAN WYPER Birth: 13 OCT 1870 Govan, Lanark, Scotland
