Title: 1881 Census Lookup pls. COULTER family
Post by: allycat on Monday 29 May 06 09:03 BST (UK)
Hi.  I'm trying to trace records for my mother-in-law's origins in Scotland, in particular the COULTER and/or KENNEDY family.

Mary Jane COULTER born 1875 Glasgow to parents: Robert John COULTER (occupation coalminer) and Jessie KENNEDY.  No siblings known of if any.

Mary Jane COULTER would have been around 6 years old at the time of the 1881 Census, don't know where they were living only that she was definitely born Glasgow.

{Extra information:  Mary Jane COULTER was definitely married in 1897 to Andrew EADIE, a miner, born 1866 in Plean, Scotland.  The couple emigrated to New Zealand in 1926 with their 12 children.  Her death certificate says they were married at Falkirk, Scotland.  Whereas his death certificate says they were married at Camelon, Stirlingshire, Scotland.  ???}

All information graciously received.  Thank you, from Allycat in Australia.

Re Andrew Eadie there are 3 possibles listed in the 1881 census.
One is listed as a millworker aged 15 , one a joiners son age 16 and the third is aged 14 and is listed as "son" no occupation.

Dear Falkyrn, it would definitely be the 15 year old Andrew EADIE then.  Allycat.   :D

     The voyage to New Zealand in 1926 was on the "IONIC", departing from Southampton on 31st Dec 1926, heading for Auckland.      On board were the following:

     Andrew        Eadie            Carter           Aged 55
     Mrs               Eadie                                          45
     Robina          Eadie            Domestic                17
     Georgina      Eadie                                           16
      Martha         Eadie            Scholar                   14
      James          Eadie                                           13
      Helen           Eadie                                           11
      Andrew        Eadie                                           10
      Jessie          Eadie                                              8

The ship's passenger list gives the address the family had come from in Scotland.      It was:  5 King Street, Shotts, Lanarkshire.

   suzilad and allycat,
                                   Just thought you might like to have a look at this census for 1881.     ...allycat, you said you didn't know where Mary Jane Coulter was living in 1881 when she would have been 6.        I will give you the same information as the census, but then I will have to make a few comments, because I believe they have made a mess of transcribing from the original census.
      1881 census, 77 Greenend, Old Monkland Eastern District, Lanarkshire.
Jessie Kor Coulter Head aged 38 born 1843 Irvine, Ayrshire.
James Kennedy  Son aged 15 b 1866 St Quivox, Ayrshire.    Coal Miner.
Jane Kennedy [Jane Coulter]    Dau aged 73 b 1808 at Tarbolton, Ayrshire.
Jessie Kennedy  Daughter aged 9 b 1872 Irvine, Ayrshire.   Scholar.
Mary Coulter Daughter aged 6 b 1875 Glasgow.   Scholar.
Martha Coulter  Daughter aged 4 b 1877 Kamannan, Stirlingshire.
Robert Coulter  Son aged 2 b 1879 Old Monklands, Lanarkshire.
William Barclay  Boarder.  aged 38  b 1843  Ireland.   Coal Miner.

~~~~~~~~---------------
      I am from Glasgow, so you may not know the area, so I will try to clarify a few things.
      Wherever it says Monklands (either Old Monklands or whatever), this is old fashioned.     It is Lanarkshire, just east of Glasgow they are talking about.
       The address on the census is 77 Greenend, which in this case I believe is Greenend in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire (or Old Monklands).
        First name on census is Jessie Kor Coulter....     I think the Kor must be short for a longer name but I don't know what the full name might be.    Also, after every single name on this census, they have written "mother of Jessie Kor Coulter."
        But that is wrong - because Jane Kennedy is aged 73 and born in 1808.
...I believe all the others listed are Jessie Kor Coulter's children but not Jane.
        Another puzzle: some of Jessie children have the surname Coulter and some Kennedy.
        And Jane Kennedy has [Jane Coulter] just after her name.
        Mary Coulter appears to have been born in Glasgow, and that is fine, but Martha is born in Kamannan, Stirlingshire.       That is wrong.      I believe they mean Slamannan, Stirlingshire - which is near Falkirk and Camelon.
...allycat, you say that on Jane Coulter's death certificate, her place of marriage is given as being Camelon.       That is in Falkirk, and Slamannan is just south of these two places.
       Hope you can figure it out.      But Jessie Coulter is head of the house, and they are all her children - except for Jane Kennedy, who, going by her birth date must surely be her mother.    Hope I have the right family here.        Do you recognise the names of any of the children?      If you do, then I would think that is proof enough that it is the right family.
                                                              Brian, Glasgow.
ev,
       That is first class.      All your information is right.        It's good stuff.     I found a much better census showing the Jane Kennedy details as you have given them: she is aged 13 on it, born 1868, just as you said..        And Jessie's maiden name was Stevenson - great!
I can now see through the puzzles of the 1881 census.    ...I found info that William Kennedy married Jessie Stevenson on 24th Dec 1863 at Irvine.       So the first children born were Kennedy.     James Kennedy born 1866 at St Quivox, Ayrshire....Jane Kennedy born 1868 at Tarbolton...and then Jessie Kennedy born 1872 Irvine.
       Now, either William Kennedy must have died or there was a divorce, because Jessie Kennedy married Robert John Coulter in 1873 at Irvine, Ayrshire    Certificate no: 595/00 0025.
       And now the next children born are Coulter.     Mary Coulter born 1875 Glasgow....Martha Coulter born 1877 Slamannan, Stirlingshire.....and Robert Coulter born 1879 Old Monkland, Lanarkshire.      [Obviously, being the first son born to the Robert John Coulter-Jessie Kennedy marriage, Robert has named it after himself.]
       suzilad and allycat, I think that part of the puzzle is solved!       Phew - that was tough.
Thanks again ev!
Jessie Stevenson/Kennedy was robert second wife.He married martha Wilson in Rutherglen ~1871 and she died in 1873(childbirth ?) but 2 months later married jessie.Reminds me of Blantyre colliery disaster when there were many widows and too few houses for incomers.
jessie had 10 children,3 died died in childhood-jessie,1871 and two in the 1880s to her third husband.jessie died in Glenochil,falkirk.Her youngest daughter,maryAnn,moved to New Mexico after her death to join her husband ,William F.Lyon whom she married in 1917(?).She had 3 children born between 1924 and 1929.
I have put a photo of jessie and her grandson on the stirlingshire forum;taken 1890.
allyct has some family photos on her website that I sent.
Though this post is older, l just came across it and decided to respond. My husband's grandmother, Mary Coulter Underwood (nee Donaldson),  was born 1895 at Jawcraig, parish of Falkirk, County of Stirling. Later census shows family at Slammanan and she has various siblings including a sister Martha.
Parents were Jane Aird Kennedy and Robert Burnet Donaldson.
M. Gd-parents Jessie Stevenson and William Kennedy
P. Gd-parents Jane Burnet and John Donaldson
Wherever it says Monklands (either Old Monklands or whatever), this is old fashioned.     It is Lanarkshire, just east of Glasgow they are talking about.
It is absolutely correct to say that 'Monklands' is old-fashioned. Though is it still sometimes used, for example the Monklands General Hospital.
However old-fashioned place names are still relevant. They are essential information for genealogical research. The reason for this is that older records were collected on the basis of parishes, and later ones by districts which were based on the parishes. This doesn't matter too much if the name of the main modern town or village in a parish is the same as the parish name, for example Hamilton, Shotts, East Kilbride etc.
It does matter a good deal when the main modern place has a different name, and there are several examples of this in Lanarkshire: Airdrie in the parish of New (or East) Monkland, Coatbridge in the parish of Old (or West) Monkland, Motherwell (mostly) in the parish of Dalziel and Wishaw in the parish of Cambusnethan being the most obvious examples.
If your ancestors are from any of these places you will struggle to find them in older records by the modern place names*. You absolutely have to know which parish these places belonged to, and it is also useful to have an idea where parishes were in relation to one another.
See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/LKS for useful information about the geography of Lanarkshire.
* If you don't believe this, try searching a transcription of the 1881 census. I have the LDS CD-ROM transcription, and if I put 'John' in the name field and 'Motherwell' as the census city or town, and the result is zero matches. If I replace 'Motherwell' with 'Dalziel' I get 974 matches. I get 2614 Johns in New Monkland, 3675 in Old Monkland and 1897 in Cambusnethan, but none in Airdrie, Coatbridge or Wishaw.
