I have managed to trace my great uncle, Hugh Horton, born 1867 at Topcliffe, North Riding of Yorkshire to the 1881 census.
In the 1881 census he was living at 4 Oxford Street, Darlington with his mother, Maragaret Horton as 'Head' of the house - she was a widow, and his elder brother Fred. (Fred was my maternal grandfather)
After that he just disappears. I have tried 1837, Ancestry, LDS etc., and can find no further trace of him.
Fred joined Durham Light Infantry, so tried that. No joy.
Can anyone have a look at Darlington records to see if there is any trace of him up there either on Death or Marriage records.
I have tried 1891 and 1901 under various spellings without any luck.
Any suggestions, anybody??????

Dear Ginaw,
Thanks for your reply - will try for the death certificate to see if there is any tie-up. Age is a year or so out, but one never knows until it is proved one way or the other.
If you have time would it be possible to check out the marriages for me? He was shown as 14 on 1881 census, so I reckon if he married it would have been between 1888 and 1901. I have tried 1837, BMD and ancestry without any luck, but we all know that entries can be missed.

Hi
There is no marriage in Darlington around that time. There is a birth of a Hugh HORTON in 1909 and a marriage in 1935 - I suppose this could be his son?? I don't have the parish registers but they are available online at
http://www.darlington.gov.uk/Living/Register+Office/RegOfficeSearch.htm
though they are not complete
Cheers
