Can anyone help pls. I have the Death Cert of my hubbys Granpa Jack Collison and he died in June 1925 in Croydon Borough Sanatorium, Cheam, registered by his Wife Caroline who i'm trying to trace. When she registered his death she was living at 10 Elm Tree Cottages, Cobham, Surrey. Now she died in 1928/29 of the same thing as her hubby (T.B.) and their daughter (hubbys mother) was fostered by Jack Collisons Sister who lived in Cobham when she was 4 (she was born in July 1924, which is the reason i put 1928/29 as her Mothers death year. Sorry to be boring and going on BUT I cannot find her death cert. anywhere, i've tried all the paid and free sites, I also cant find her birth cert., as on her marriage cert. she is named Caroline Annie Dorothy NOT the Caroline Mary that is listed, which i sent off for. So i am concentrating on her death now. Very puzzling. Does anyone know if this sanitorium is still there as she might even have died in the same place, or does Elm Tree Cottages still exist? Thanx everyone.

Hi Mags,
If it's any consolation, I've checked all quarters for 1928/9 for her death with no luck :( Both Cobham & Cheam come under Epsom Reg. district & Croydon is Croydon. I can only assume that perhaps her name was incorrectly spelt, perhaps, Colison? When did she marry & what was her maiden name?

Hi Jane
I've tried up to 4 yrs after and before but his Mum was definitely 4 when she died. She married a Jack Collison on 6/03/1924 and her maiden name was Leavens, altho i think she came from Cambridge the only one there was a Caroline Mary and i cant find her baptism to see if parents changed her name to Caroline Annie Dorothy, her Father on marriage cert. was Henry and in Cambridge the father was Harry. Hope this helps. Plus i've also checked all the combinations of the spelling too.
Many thanx.

Marg,
Just a thought, but if caroline was sick with TB it makes sense that she might have entered the sanatorium prior to her death for some period of time, being too sick to care for her daughter she placed her with her sister-in-law when the child was 4 but died sometime after? Might be worth extending the search for her death beyond the 4 years you've already searched.
Do you have a birth date for Caroline from the marriage certificate? It's possible she might be on the 1901 census. What about investigating Jack Collison & his sister (name, married or not, age?) that way it might be more conclusive that you've got the right caroline.
Henry & Harry are often interchangeable, so could be the same person.

Hi Jane
Done all that, I know his sister and who she married etc., plus i have the 1901 census but only for Carry in Cambridge, she says she is 25 on her marriage cert in 1924 and he is 21. Dyu know if that Sanitorium is still there? They might have her death cert there. Clutching at straws now i know, but this is really bugging me as i cant go any further up her side of the tree. She actually registered her hubbys death so it says on the death cert. Thanx for trying, and if u do know if that sanitorium exists it might help. Cheers again.

Hi Margaret,
This must be very frustrating for you!
After an extensive Google search for the sanatorium in Cheam I had to admit defeat :( I found this mailing list you have to subscribe to on Rootsweb which might be of help
http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail_general.html#SANATORIUMS
To track down the sanatorium I would suggest you contact the library services at Croydon to see if they can help http://www.croydononline.org/
They might have a record of her death or admission (if indeed she was) but because medical records are normally subject to 100 year closure I doubt whether it will be useful but on the other hand if you don't ask you don't get!
Good luck,
jane
