Title: Occupations - 1841 Manchester
Post by: lddueck on Saturday 27 May 06 04:10 BST (UK)
I'm told that the abbreviation "M.S" in the Occupation column means "Male Servant".  However, on the census page I'm looking at (Piece 577/18, Folio 28), it appears that almost every male "Head of Household" is a "M.S.", which I find a little odd.  Alternatively, could this abbreviation have anything to do with the mining industry?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Linda,

The ennumerators instructions for the 1841 specify that the initials MS are used for Male Servant and FS for Female Servant.  So I think you'll find that Male Servant is correct.
