Title: Archibald Leach aka Cary Grant
Post by: BlackPearl on Thursday 25 May 06 20:48 BST (UK)
Hi, if you think that you might be able to help in my quest to find a connection between my Leach family and that of the actor Cary Grant, then please refer to my request for a census lookup over on the census lookups board as a starting point.  I am trying to find more info about Cary's father Elias his brothers and sisters and their ascendants.  The Story goes that my 2g-grandfather and Cary's father were brothers or cousins?!  I don't see the connection myself yet - but never say never!

Thanks
Joanne  ;D

Did they ever live in Bristol ??

Slightly off-topic, but .....
I went to Fairfield Grammer School in Montpelier, Bristol and the story was, that Cary Grant had also been a pupil there.

And because (many) kids used to carve their names in the old wooden school desks, the 'idiots' ran around looking for old school desks, trying to find one with "Cary Grant' carved in it.  The 'clever' kids looked for desks with 'Archibald Leach' carvings.

Hi Blackpearl
I remember chatting to someone in roots that was also related to Carry Grant.
It was a while ago now, so I will have to ask a few of my friends in the chat room to remind me who it was. They had a family tree that showed how they were connected as well.
I will get back to you as soon as I find out who it was.

I used to live in Bristol and I can remember I used to pass a house with a blue plaque on it because Cary Grant used to live there/ was born there. I've been looking at a map and I think it was Hughenden Road in Horfield or it might have been St. Leonard's Road. It was certainly one of the roads leading directly off Horfield Common near Wellington Hill. I think one of the buildings in Picton Street, Montpelier claimed he lived there as well but it didn't have a plaque then.

Hey Joanne,
I wonder if you will get this reply, looks like this topic was started in 2006.
Anywho, I seem to have a very similar relation with Cary Grant as you. I'm very certain that he is my grandfathers mothers cousin.
so my great-grandmothers cousin i think.
I was wondering if you ever discovered your full family tree, we may even be related somewhere down the line ha, imagine that!
Be lovely to hear from you,
cheers
Jess  :)

My Grandfather (Idris Alexander Leach) and Cary Grants (Archibald Alexander Leach) Grandfather were brothers
My Grandfather's Grandfather was Benjamin Leach born 29 Jan 1826
Just need to confirm this my Grandmother always told me this
I know Cary Grant's father was Elias James Leach (1873-1935)
Does anyone know who Elias James Leach's father was?

Hi Jess, still looking for that connection I am afraid! The way I was always told we were related is not at all possible as I have proved lol but no harm in keeping looking when I have the time.  A distant cousin of mine has, according to my husband, found the connection and has it down on paper in a proper tree that he says he is sure he has seen.  Confusing I know but my husband is also my distant cousin (4th to be exact lol) and is more closely related to this other chap than I am so I still carry the Leach surname even though I married last year!  with a very busy life we keep saying we must go and see him so I can get a look at this tree but never seem to find the time!  Perhaps if you give me a few of your family names approx dates and places etc. I might be able to establish whether or not me and you are related.

and Paul? momo22 was right.  Elias's father was John Leach. I think his father was George Leach b. approx 1805 but as of yet have no way to prove this.  The only John Leach that seems to match on the 1851 census was aged 9 and all on his tod in the workhouse with no other family members.  I havent come acroos the name of Idris yet whilst searching but probably will do eventually if only to disprove what I, and you possibly, wers told by family members!

Regards

Hello,
I have a document that you might be interested in with regards to Carry Grant.  I believe his mothers name is Kathleen M. Leach wife of Frederick Leach.  If this rings a bell write me back and I will further try to help you.  I never heard the names George.  But my dad was 14 when he and his mom went to California to visit him.  Looking for that picture.  It seems  Carry Grant is my great grandfathers daughters child.  I have his last Will and Testament.  Doesn't really mention Carry Grant--maybe wasn't born yet!?? Don't know.

Hi achash and welcome to RootsChat

Debbi2K hasn't been on RootsChat since September 2011.
If you reply to this, and then put another post on, you will be able to use the PM (private message) system to contact her directly (as long as her email is still the same of course)

Good luck.

Lucky you being related to Archibald Leach aka Cary Grant.  In my younger days I used to swoon over him  ::)   ::)   ::)   ::)

Hi Joanne,

Did you have any luck on this? My grandmother is somehow related. I haven't researched it much. My grandmother's name was Martha Leach and she had a twin sister Mary. I don't recall the exact story but I think they were cousins or something. They would have been about the same age. I believe she was also from the Fairfield area, or at least we used to go to reunions down there.

Thanks,
Mike
