Hi , I am trying to find Thomas Matthias and his wife Ann and family.
Thomas Matthias was born in Brymbo 1802. his wife Ann was born about 1807 in Trythue.Flintshire. their children.
Joseph ,Jonathon,Hannah,Thomas, andEdward. were all born in Broughton.
they were living in Broughton, district of Brymbo in 1851.
would dearly like to find some of them in 1861 if that is possible.
would appreciate it if someone with access to 1871 could possibly have a look in the 1861 census to see if they are there.
many thanks. JUNE.
Moderator Comment: If anybody can help, then please check out the thread on the Staffordshire Board as well, as it's also about a MATTHIAS family, so you may be able to avoid duplication of efforts. Thanks :)

Hi June
I cannot find the parents in 1861 or onwards. Do you want details of any of the children?
As I could not see them in later censuses I had a quick look at the deaths and there is a Thomas in 1855 in the Wrexham area and another in 1860. Also a Hannah death in 1859.
Incidentally Trythue will be Tryddyn.
To confuse more there is an Ann born 1809 living in Broughton but with husband David and she is said to be born in Wrexham.
Also parts of the 1861 are missing.
Let me know if I can look up anything else but it may be next week as I am away tomorrow.

I replied on another one of your posts. My gr/gr grandfather is a Joseph Dodd of Broughton, born in 1836, died 1910.
The information I have shows his wife as being Joanna Dodd, nee Dodd. I'm not sure if her maiden name is correct.
Any ideas?

There is a possible marriage in 1865 to a Johanna Williams. Might be them.

Thank you for your reply Mike. Somebody has also confirmed this on another post :)

I know this is quite late in coming, but I just joined Roots Chat. I am researching an ancestor named Charlotte George, whose birthplace was Tryddyn, Flintshire, Wales. She emigrated to the U.S. aboard the William Stetson in 1855, leaving from Liverpool and landing at Castle Garden, NY. She is listed next to a family named Matthias, and in fact, on the Castle Garden website, is incorrectly listed by the name Charlotte Matthias, so I get the impression they may have been traveling as a group. For whatever reason, on the ship's passenger list, her name is sandwiched between the members of the Matthias family. I am wondering if they were friends or neighbors and thus traveling together. The Matthias family members include: Thomas, age 54, collier; Ann, 48, wife; Joseph, 24, collier; Hannah, 16, spinster; Thomas, 13, collier; and Edward, age 9. Their address is difficult to read but looks like "Lewis Davies...Jonathan Ellis...Brymbo...Wrecsam Denbigshire." My ancestor, Charlotte, was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS/Mormon), as were most others on board the William Stetson. Not sure if this is the family you're looking for, but it seems to line up pretty closely with what information you gave in your post. In that case, you'd be unlikely to find them in the 1861 Wales census or later since it appears they left for America.

Hi mldy
Many, many thanks for this information.
Thomas Matthias was my 4 x great grandfather, I being descended from his second son Jonathan. I've been searching for this family after their appearance on the 1851 census for a number of years now, without any success what so ever. I have tried every variant of the surname Matthias in the death indexes and censuses including Mathias, Matthews etc, etc.
How did you come by this information, I would dearly love to see an image of the actual passenger list, is it available on A*******? I feel sure that this has to be my Matthias Family given the combination of Christian names and ages that fit exactly.
Thank you so much for sharing this information, you've certainly given me a new avenue of research to follow up!
Kindest Regards ~ Rowlandson

Hi Mldy
I have found two similar named families. Listed on 1851 census as living in Broughton is Thomas Matthias, 49; Ann Matthias, 44; Children Joseph. 19; Jonathan, 16; Hannah, 18; Thomas, 9; Edward, 5.
Think this must be the family you are speaking of, although curious as to why Jonathan is missing off the voyage to the USA.
Also on the 1851 census living in Brymbo (both villages close to each other) is Thomas Matthias, 62; Ann Matthias, 60; Children Ellen, 27; Thomas, 23; Edward, 1.
Thomas' father is John Matthias and Mother is Catherine Matthias (nee Evans).
I think this clan is from my family tree.
Be interested if anyone could confirm this?

Hi Jeze,
Whilst I can't confirm if this second family is yours, I do know where Jonathan Matthias (Son of the first family) was at the time of the 1861 census. He can be found living with his future wife, Emma Kynaston Nee Evans at Tryddyn, Flintshire RG9/4278, Folio 67 Page 32.
The Thomas Matthias that went to the USA was the son of a Thomas Matthias, accordding to his marriage certificate.

Hi Rowlandson,
There's were a lot of Thomas Matthias's living in that area at the time. I think I may leave this one for a bit and tackle another descendant!

Hi Rowlandson and Jeze,
You both know more about the Matthias family/families than I do, as I am not actually related. I just thought that by looking them up, I might find my ancestors nearby. I will have to check the censuses you mentioned.
One place that's easy to find their record of arrival is the Castle Garden website, castlegarden.org. In the upper left corner, click Search. Then enter Ship Name as William Stetson and select Matthias as Surname and it will bring them right up.
You could probably find the passenger list on A******* but you can also look it up for free on the LDS site, familysearch.org. To find it, click on "Catalog" under where it says "Discover Your Family History." Then in the Search drop-down menu, select Film numbers. Next to that, type in 175508. Click on "Passenger Lists of Vessels Arriving at New York, 1820-1897. In red letters it will say "New York Passenger Lists are available online, click here." Once that comes up, under "View Images in this collection" click on "Browse through 428,944 images." Select NARA Roll Number 152 - 8 May 1855 - 31 May 1855. From there, you will type in "615" as the page number. You can just type it right in the box and hit enter, and it should bring up the list for the William Stetson, showing the Matthias family. As I mentioned earlier, my ancestor, Charlotte George, is incorrectly listed on here as Charlotte Matthias. However, on LDS emigration records, she is correctly listed as Charlotte George.
I tried to attach the document I have, which is a scan of a microfilm I ordered from the LDS Family History Library (Film #025690 - LDS Emigration Records for Europe). These microfilms can be ordered inexpensively through your local LDS family history centers.
The LDS record is very similar to the passenger list, with a few exceptions. Both records give the names, ages, and occupations. Both records seem to indicate they traveled in steerage. The LDS emigration record also says they put down a deposit of 7 pounds, with a remaining balance of 19 pounds, 2 shillings, and 6 pence.
The next question is...where did they go from there? My ancestor, Charlotte George apparently did not start for Utah to join the other LDS until December 1855. Perhaps she was working along the way to save money for the next leg of her journey. She left with a company of LDS converts, mostly Welsh, in the summer of 1856 from Iowa and arrived in Utah in Oct. 1856. I looked to see if perhaps the Matthias family were in that company, but they were not.
Hopefully some of this will prove useful to you.

I should note that when I tried to attach my document to the post, it gave me an error message. Perhaps it was too large?
