Title: Henry Collyer (b.Erith Kent) in 1891 census please.
Post by: Phil Goater on Tuesday 23 May 06 19:33 BST (UK)
I'm interested in Henry Colyer b.abt 1833 in Erith Kent. He worked with bricks. In 1880 his wife and kids are in New York without him. I then found Henry Collyer at the age of 47 in the 1881 census living as a boarder in Caldicot, Monmouth with Chas and Louisa Morgan. Both Henry and Chas are recorded as brickmakers and Henry's place of birth is given as Erith, Kent. He claims to be unmarried!
I'd be interested in any sighting of him in the 1891 census. In previous census returns he has appeared as Colyer and Collier. I'd also be interested if he's found another variation!!!

Thank you Jean.

That makes a lot of sense because his eldest son was in Lymm with his large family at that time.
There was clearly work available up there and family legend links them with the Manchester Ship Canal which was being built then. It seems that he and the missus didn't get on!

Thanks to this lead I have now found him still in Lymm in 1891 (as Collyer) and his death in the same area in 1903 (as Colyer).
In view of this I would be grateful if someone could check for any sign of another of his sons called Frederick born in 1860 in Aylesford, Kent. in the 1891 census.

Hi Phil,

Have looked for Frederick born Aylesford in 1891 and can't see anything resembling Colyer (or Collier etc.)  I'd suggest that you post a separate request to see if anyone can find him.

It seems Henry Charles Colyer (b. Erith 1833), and his son, also Henry Charles Colyer (b. Erith 1853), and his son, Henry (b. 1876) were very well travelled for their time!  I have that the first Henry and his wife Mary Ann were in New York from around 1870/1, so possibly missed the 1871 England & Wales Census.  They had three children there, but by the 1880 US census Mary Ann was head of household with 10 of the children there (Jesse and younger).  So presumably by this time Henry Charles had returned to England.  The younger Henry Charles married in Erith in 1873/4, but soon after must have gone out to New York, where he had children, before then travelling and having children in New Zealand, Australia and then Lymm in Cheshire..... as I say very well travelled.  This makes tracing these Colyer's a bit difficult - last night I was using both Ancestry and Find my Past to find immigration and ships passenger records to trace their various movements.  As ships passenger records are not complete, it is not a complete picture by someway - but I will carry on!

As background Henry Charles Colyer (b. Erith 1833) is my 3 x great grand uncle (or something like that!).  I am in the process of putting all my late father's notes on the Colyer's, Hooker's and other related families into Ancestry (all his material is in various obsolete programmes and paper notes).  As well as the usual sources, my father had a lot of discussion with various distant Colyer cousins in the UK, US and Australia - it'll take a while to go through all the letters and emails.

Wow Tim, I started this thread back in 2006 when researching my friend Barry Colyer’s ancestry following a church charity auction. It was an interesting and rewarding exercise. I too marvelled at the travelling which would have taken months by boat. The icing on the cake was obtaining a photo of an ancestor in America who clearly shared facial features with Barry. It provided him with a wide ranging geographical family history trail to follow with the site of the family brickworks by the river Swan in Perth still in evidence. I have shared your latest entry with him.
Thanks for sharing,
Phil
