Can any one help please? Am looking for a register of birth for a Joseph Stein 1864 Croydon Surrey I think it is my GGG Grandfarther, it has been said he changed his name to Steer in first world war. But cant find any birth recolds for either Joesph steer or Stein, but have found census for Joseph steer. Just want to check that it is not a tall family tale, that he did change his name from stein to steer, so I know which certificate to look for, as am commin up with nothing. Can anyone help, if any one has info or any suggestions please advise, as I am drawing a blank thanks

Hi Hazelmc
What "concrete" information do you have on your grandfather ie. references that you know definitely relate to him? Marriage? Death? Anything at all?

Hi Hazel,
Is this Joseph the son of George Weller STEER? If so then I think he has always been STEER as I think I can see him from 1871-1901 as that, also I have found this on the IGI,
George Weller STEER
Birth: 15 Jun 1828
Christening: 21 Sep 1828 George Street Independent, Croydon, Surrey
Father: George STEER
Mother: Elizabeth FAWLER
Haven't Joseph's birth yet though :(
If it's not this Joseph what other details do you have for him?
Regards

Hi Daisy
yep Joseph steer was George steers son my sister keeps on about stein but i think this info is one of thoughs family fallacies as i cant find a thing she has written on back of her family trey findings it was Stranks was his origanal name for Joseph Steer which i found out on the Josephs sons birth certificate as it was Joseph wife maiden name am get confused with info she is giving she claims Joseph son Stanley steers wife told her that Stanley frather Joseph steer changed his name in the war from stein to steer well if thats the case i have not found any evidence to prove this am stumped
Info Stanley steer Born 1903 Horsham
Farther Joseph Steer 1864 Croydon
Mother Grace Steer Maiden name Stranks born 1865 Aylesbury
Grace Steers mother Lydia 1841 Born Adum Bucks
Father Thomas Steer 1842 Aylesbury
Have found siblings to through censuses
Joesph steer farther George Steer 1828
Mother Susannah Southey 1831 Croydon
it all fits so so well so am confused do you think my sister is getting confused with info i do

Hi Hazel,
This could be the marriage,
Joseph John STEER Dec Q 1884 Croydon v.2a p.484
other names on page,
Grace STRANKS
Elizabeth BROWN
Thomas SPICER
If you get the marriage cert. it will confirm who their fathers are.
I am a bit confused too :)
If you are sure you have the right birth certificate for Stanley ( Is that Stanley Joseph T. STEER) and he was born STEER in 1903, how could they have changed the name from STEIN in the war ???
I can also see this death,
Stanley Joseph T STEER
DOB; 09 May 1903
Death; May 1989
age;85
Worthing, West Sussex
v.18 p.1964
Does that seem right for your Stanley?

Hi Daisy,
yep thats the the right Stanley Joseph Tomas steer, to be honest I think my sister has got confused with strank, Graces maiden name and stein.
Don't know where she got that name from and that is defiantly Joseph steer marriage, as the dates work out correct to the census and children birth where not long after that date.
I think we are looking for a phantom name of a person, I.e Joseph Stein that he dose not exists.
I really appreciate all the help your giving me, dose your recolds have any thing on Susannah Southey Georges Steers wife. Census said she was born Croydon 1831 ish, think her mother may have been called Sarah, farther obviously Southey, they would have probably been born about 1799ish, married 1815 ish I think.
If you have the time could you give it a look for me, I think I might have to invest in one of though Parish CD thingys for this area, as allot of family seem to be from their.
Daisy you have been great will all the info you have been finding, I am hoping the Southey thing, is going to head back toward Robert Southey line, as I have been told he is a distant relation to us. But then again it could be another family roomer
Thanks again for all your help

Hi Hazel,
I think this is going to get confusing ::) ;D
I can see an entry on the IGI of,
Susan SOUTHEY
B. 21 May 1825
Chr. 17 Jun 1825 St Olave, Bermondsey, London
Father: James Southey
Mother: Maria
I also think I can see this Susan age 16, in 1841 with her mother Maria living in Battersea. She seems too old.
There is also,
Susanna SOUTHEY
Chr. 01 Mar 1835 St John the Baptist, Croydon, Surrey
Father: William Southey
Mother: Sarah
I thought this one was too young but looking further there are quite a few children born to a William and Sarah between 1818 and 1835, in Croydon and Newington, some of which state birth dates as earlier than the years they were christened.
I can't find this Susanna in the 1841 census but I can find the mother Sarah with sons William and George, then in 1851 (by which time Susanna has married) I can see this family and there is also a daur. M. A ::) age 28 who wasn't with them in 1841, if this is the right family maybe the sisters are hidden somewhere together in 1841 :-\ In 1861 the son William seems to be living next door to George and Susannah STEER. Sounds good :) or just coincidence :-\
In the census Susan/nah STEER changes where she was born nearly everytime ::) although it's all the same area,
1851 Susan age 21 b. Locks Field London
1861 Susannah age 30 b. Newington Surrey
1871 Rosa S. age 40 b. Surrey Croydon
1881 Susannah age 50 b. Croydon
1891 Susannah age 62 b. Addington Surrey
It may be worth getting the marriage cert. of Susannah & George (ref. given on different thread) to confirm who her father was.

Hi Daisy
This is exactly what i found :) I think the 1861 census is the one that seems the most intresting i do think that is her (brother William We Think) it seams to coincidental for them not to be related ::) and the fact that the Susannah is married to George Steer and were all neighbors is a good chance we have the right one.
Am going to have to order birth certificate so i get right parents for Susannah, I'm glad that I'm not the only one that thinks Susannah was related to William (brother) and that Sarah was her mother.
What would i do with out you :D : ;D when i get certificate through will let you know which one it was ??? thanks Daisy you been so much help ;D ;D ;D

Hi Hazel,
The marriage cert. will only give you the fathers name, hopefully William :), but the witnesses may also help.
There is a possible death of William Snr, but there's quite alot of them around ::)
William SOUTHEY Sep Q 1838 Croydon v.4 p.39
It may be interesting to see who the informant is.
