I am trying to find info on my 3XG Grandfather, Reverend John Harris, (or Harries),. He was born in Pembrokeshire, Wales about 1755-60 and married a Phoebe?. In 1787, they went to Placentia and St John's, Newfoundland, with the Church of England. Harris died in St John's in January of 1810. The balance of the family, it is believed, returned to Bristol.
Does anybody know if there are any birth or marriage records still available for these people?
Help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

If its not too late I have come across the mrge of a John Harries to a Phebe Cullis at Haverfordwest St Mary in 1784.

Delighted to find more info on my GGGGGrandfather Rev. John Harries.
I understand that he arrived in Newfoundland in about 1787. Prince William had been in
Newfoundland the year before and was unhappy that the area of Placentia did not have an
Anglican minister. The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel sent Rev Harries over from Wales
with his wife and family. The family relocated to St. John's-the capital-after finding that there was
little need for an Anglican minister in Placentia Bay.
One record indicated that he had a M.A.- no idea where he obtained that.
The census of 1794/95 in St. John's indicated that he had one son and four daughters.
There were numerous letters written by John Harries and held by the SPG.
He had at least one other daughter Jane Hester in 1796 May 31st in St. John's at the Anglican Cathedral.
Harries was well regarded as a minister. He also contributed to the establishment of a newspaper,
a choir, and a school in the town per correspondence.
He died in Jan 1810 and was buried in the church yard. If born in 1859-he would have been 50/51.
An account in the Gentlemen's Magazine online indicated that his wife and children were left in difficult circumstances.
I have seen no further record of her in Newfoundland-Phoebe Harries was listed in the newspaper that year as
administrator of her estate.
Their son William is my ancestor. He relocated to Ferryland and got permission in 1811 to marry a
Catholic woman names Saunders. He had five ? daughters and a son William, they moved to St. John's, and young William had
a large family including my great grandfather John Harris.
I welcome any further information about their early years in Wales.

An Anglican clergyman of that period is almost certain to have a degree from Oxford or Cambridge. Lists have been published as 'Alumni Oxoniensis' or '...Cantabridgiensis', the volumes of which should be in county libraries or record offices. The complilers were Foster and Venn, respectively [I hope I have put them in the right order!]
