Hi.
As I have received loads of help throughout the past few years, I would like to reciprocate the gesture.
If anybody has family members who died in action during WW-II and are burried in The Netherlands, I can try and make a picture of the grave. I can then send it (digitally) through the net.
Preferrably the north and west part of the country, but I'm sure I can work something out for other parts as well. My family is like a virus and they're spread out all over the place, so it shouldn't be a problem. ;D
Just let me know if I can be of help.
Regards,
Kya Milo

Hi Kya Milo !
I don't need a photo right now - but I just wanted to say thank you so much for offering !
I'm sure somebody will be thrilled to know - there's the possibility of photographs !!
Annie :) :) :) :)

I guess the genealogical community is a prime example of how people should deal with eachother ;) Without the help from people here I could have never found out as much about my British heritage as I have.
"What goes around, comes around" can be actually pretty positive.
Glad te be able of help.

Kya

Hi Suee
I'm glad to help. Not sure exactly WHEN I can go, but we are free in the weekend so I'll make a go of it on Sunday if you can wait that long?
Since no one has been there from your family do you want me to leave anything special there for you?
-
Hi Renee
Cant tell you how greatfull i am, William was a relative of my husbands family, we are going up to York in 2 weeks to see where he flew from but did not return.
One day he hopes to go over and see his grave, but until then this is the only thing he can do.
He is really touched that you say you can take a photo for him many thanks.
As for taking something that is really kind i cant expect you to do that just someone being there for our family is enough.
If ever there is anything i can do for you please ask, i will send you my email many many thanks. :'(

Look forward to your message and I'll keep you posted!

Hi Peter and all
took the afternoon off and went to Almelo. It took a while to find and the cemetery its massif, but well looked after and peacefull, lots of trees and greenary with many people visiting graves, just as a Cemetry should be . In the end I found the war graves, took photos of each and wrote down what was written on them. Quite an expierience, one of those moments where it makes you stop and think. All those young sons of parents who said goodbye and never saw them again. By one of the graves there was even a photo in a frame resting against the stone. ( Private F J Larrett of the Perth regiment ) The entire crew of a bomber with a elderly Dutch chap on board.
Anyway here are the inscriptions for those interested ;

Does anyone know of a list of War Graves in the Netherlands. I'm thinking about trying to get to as many as I can and just making photos of them all. I guess it will take some time and I hear that the ones around Arnhem Nijmegen etc where all the big action took place are massif.
Anyway, I took loads of photos and if anyone with links to these fallen wants copies just let me know.
all the best
Pete

Many thanks for what you have done. I've not seen a list anywhere but if you email CWGC I'm sure they must have lists by country of the sites they maintain. Pete

Hi Just browsing the site came across this link. If you go onto CWGC.org and where it has search our records you have a choice of casualties or Cemeteries its a drop down arrow. Type in the cemetery you require and hey presto. Info of men and location.
There is also a <steve [--at--] twgpp.org> if you copy this link and paste it, its the link to the War Graves Photograhic project. This is now linked with CWGC. If you check with Steve the guy who runs it with tons of volunteers they would A, appreciate any volunteers B, may already have the grave photo you require. I am a volunteer for the project.
kind regards

Hi,I was browsing and came across your kind offer and thought I would post a request for a photo of the grave of a family member. His name was Duncan Farquar MATHESON son of Farquhar Matheson and Norah McAllum of New Plymouth New Zealand.Flying Officer Matheson,RNZAF 392057,was the captain on board a Halifax II which took off at 2243 hours from Elvington as part of Operation Essen.Shot down by a nighter (Hptm Paul Forster,I/NJG1) crashing at 0147 hours some 2 km east of Zierikzee (Zeeland) on Schouwen. The crew were initially buried at Haamstede and later reinterred at Bergen -op -Zoom.At the time of his death,Matheson had completed 456 flying hours and was on his 4th operation.Date of death,26th July 1943 age 26 years.Cemetery name,Bergen -op - Zoom War Cemetery,Noord - Brabant,Netherlands.Grave No 14 B 7.I hope I have given enough details and that the cemetery is not too far away.To my knowledge no one in the family here in N.Z has seen a photo of the grave,so what a great opportunity and one that I hope is still available. Many thanks.gereon :)

Hi
Just found the website and came across your offer, and was wondering if you or others can help.
We have traced a relative through the War Museum in Edinburgh Castle in Scotland. The details are as follows:- Trooper Robert Hunter 321751, Royal Scots Greys(2nd Dragoons) Royal Armoured Corps.
Died aged 29 on 29/10/1944. He is buried at BERGEN-OP-ZOOM WAR CEMETARY, Ref 19.A.10, Casualty type : Commonwealth War Dead.
We believe he was involved in the liberation of Netherland only days earlier, but have no proof as yet, as our research tell us the Infantry Brigade of the Canadian Armoured Division may have led the assault on the Germans.
Anyway would really appreciate any help you can give us.
Best Regards

Dear Renee.S and petey22
I am looking for any New Zealand Air Force graves pictures in Holland as my colleague in New Zealand is taking part in a project to get photographs of all RNZAF graves onto a website so anyone could access them. I would really appreciate anything you can do.

Dear Dee Boneham. Do you know about a Oswald A. Matthews age 20 in 1941, born Wellington NZ, pilot 115 squadron, plane might be Well R 1053 but hard to read in photo of list, target Cologne, died 7/07/41 buried 7/08/41 This again is hard to read. There are also; George Young from Palmerston died 1942, another two from Palmerston, someone from Christchurch but my photo was focused on the person I was looking for so is poor elsewhere.
The burials are in a private cemetery at Vredenhof on the island of Schiermonnikoog off the north coast of Holland.
There are only 118 burials there starting from a seaman in 1906 but mostly service men of all nationalities who have washed up on the beaches there. The majority seem to be airmen from 39/45.I got the above from a photo of the list of graves which I took in 2005 but it is not a very clear picture.
I have photos of the cemetery and there is one on the CWGC site. It is a lovely spot and well kept be the locals.
I can send photos of the list and the general views of the cemetery if anyone wants them. Humphpaul
-
Thanks for your offer Humphpaul I have sent you a pm to ask you to send the photos via email to my friend in NZ. I have also got a contact on another forum who is looking for Australian graves so if you could check that too.
The plane is likely to be R1053 as some of the early models had a similar registration which was different from the Sqn identifier ie KO-Q (Queenie). I might check this out with that forum to find out more if you are interested.

I am not sure if you have had a reply from the original poster but I do know from another forum there are a number of Dutch people who have taken photographs of many headstones in Holland.
If you have a look on WW2talk.com (you will have to register first to post) then you may find that the picture has already been taken, if you do not wish to register let me know and I will request them on your behalf.
Regards
Andy

Hi Andy
I have not as yet had any reply re my request.
I have just taken a quick look at WW2talk.com. It’s a huge site and will take some searching through it but it offers a very good chance of getting a photo of Edwin’s grave.
Many thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
Alfred

My response is the same as Alfred's. No reply as yet so thanks for giving us the name of this site and I will certainly check it out!
Once again many thanks for your time

John fantastic lead you gave me.
No photo to be found on web site but I did manage to contact a forum member who has kindly sent me the photo I was looking for.

To All,
I want to offer my sincere apologies for not having responded to any of the queries. :-[
My little family has experienced some very tough crises these past 5 years and unfortunately the genealogy hobby was one of the fatalities. Hoping to pick it back up on a regular basis, and if anybody still wants me to try and obtain pictures for them, please do get in touch. As for the ones who have succeeded in getting pictures despite my inadvertent lack of cooperation: Yeah! ;D
Kind regards
TD
-
I hope your family is better now. One thing one learns when one does genealogy is that patience is an utmost necessity! :)
-
It was kind of you to offer in the first place. I havent had a chance to come on here for a while so I know the feeling. ;D
-
Hi Gereon. I have an interest in Farquhar Duncan MATHESON but not as family, as you are, (I am assuming through his mother), but because Duncan and my mother were "boyfriend/girlfriend" prior to him being sent to Canada to further his training and then on to the RAF. I would be interested to hear from you. I have numerous photos of Duncan and my mother as well as photos from his time spent at the Bell Block airfield.
Further to your query regarding Duncan's war grave, have you seen this: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=Matheson&GSfn=Farquhar&GSiman=1&GScid=2161052&GRid=12727331&
I look forward to your reply.
Thanks Adele
PS: I am also from New Plymouth but currently in the South Island for a couple of years :D
