Title: TB Sanitarium sussex
Post by: JENANN on Monday 22 May 06 10:48 BST (UK)
Hi My grandmother lived for some years as a small sickly child in what we believe was a TB Sanitarium in Eastbourne area we think it may have been church related as my grandmother always said it was the nuns there that taught her how to smoke . This was around the 1915 era.She also told stories of taking swabs through knee high snow. Anyone got any ideas. Thanks

Hi
Have a look at the A2A site and search the East Sussex Archives on there.  If you put "Sanatorium" into it you might get some hits.  I think Hellingly was that sort of hospital.  I have a vague memory of another thread about this sort if thing so it might be worth using the search rootschat box too.

My grandfather died in the Robertsbridge sanitorium in the early 1930's it is now the Robertsbridge Bruderhof.  He lived in Hellingly so I think this must have been the nearest one.

Hellingly Hospital was a mental hospital and only closed in the 1960's  I think it was always this and not ever used for any other purpose.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jenann

According to my little book 'The Crumbles Story' by  Anne Botha published by S B Publications there was a TB sanitorium at Langney Point in Eastbourne.  It opened in 1895 and was an isolation hospital for allsorts of infectious diseases such as Smallpox, scarlet fever, diptheria etc.  It closed in 1940 and was demolished during the war.

It is now under what has become Sovereign Harbour.

Thats interesting I am surprised they mixed the childhood things with the TB, I know my mother said you had to go to an isolational hospital for scarlet fever as it was considered very dangerous prior to penicillin.

I had it when I was a child in the 60's and even then the doctor was a bit wary of it. Made my mum keep all my things separate to the rest of the family

Thankyou both for the info. The Eastbourne 1 is very interesting because it fits in with family stories. Jenann

I used to live in viw of the Robertsbridge Sanatorium and was still called that in the 50's ( from a map)  It stil retains on the exterior the look of an hospital but as has been pointed out it is now a religious institute and whilst they are welcoming to say the least they hold no papers of its former days.

As a child I had Scarlatina and wasn't allowed near other kids and this wa sin the early 70's because of the fact it was highly contagious.  Does Scarlet Fever and tina still exist in the UK?

Hi Rob - Yes, like you I wonder whether Scarlet Fever and Scarletina exist today. I had Scarletina as a  kid in London - early 1950's. I don't re- call that anyone else in the class had it and don't remember feeling ill. Kept well away from everyone of course - I remember the whole class wrote me letters as an excercise - had them for years but now sadly lost.

I remember one day being laid up sick everywhere and sweating profusely then feeling alright but I was kept isolated for a week under doctors instructions

Scarlet fever and scarletina are the same thing, more commonly called scarletina these days.  It is a bacterial childhood illness that is characterised by very high temperature, a fine red rash, sore throat and what they call a rasberry tongue as you get spots on your tongue that look like .... you got it!!! a raspberry.
Before antibiotics came in after the war it was quite a serious thing as small kids and frail kids eg those with TB, could die of it so they were very frightened by it.  These days you just go to the GP when your kid's unwell and get antibiotics so I expect they catch quite a bit before it gets too bad.
Aren't we lucky they discovered penicillin.

Hi again The hospital at Langney Point does anyone know if it was run by nuns or had a religious connection. Does it snow in Eastbourne my grandmother said she used to go through knee deep snow as achild taking swabs from the sick children to be tested jenann

Does it snow in Eastbourne?  Hell yes and if they get it it is worse than the surrounding area.  The South Downs and the open expanse of the Pevensey Levels make it very susceptible to the snow.

Hi,

I know nothing about Langley but Hellingley was still a mental hospital in about 1980 as I remember visiting somebody there. It was a very frightening building in many ways. Regarding snow. We certainly got loads in Hastings in the 60s.

I don't think Hellingly was ever used as a sanitorium though.  Although I did have physiotherapy up there in the 1980s.

I had an (non-direct) ancestor in a hospital in St Leonard's call
Eversfield Hospital, I think it was proeviously called Friedenfels

I think early treatment consisted mainly opf fresh air!
