Hi Lyz ;D
Can you give me a few more details, such as any dates you have, as searching on Ancestry acutally brings up quite a lot of Thomas Amers & Louisa Amers!
Best wishes

Hi Rowena,
Thank You for replying. Tom and Louisa had baby Prudence in 1885 ( ish ) and Owen in 1896. I can't find their marriage date, but it looks like they may have used the surname Casey as well! I think they were unlicenced hawkers and caught out! Lyz

Are you sure Owen is Tom and Louisa's child? I can see T & L on the 1901 census with children Nelson (aged 17), Prudence (15) and Lucy (13), but the only 4 yr-old Owen Amer I can see is listed as the son of Owen and Lydia Amer. (Owen Sr is also a hawker.)
Here's the 1901 census:
RG13/1321/58/28
Uxbridge Rd (Caravan), Rickmansworth, Herts
Thomas Amer Head 56 Stall Proprietor at Fairs b Denham, Bucks
Louisa Amer Wife 56 b Chesham, Bucks
Nelson Amer Son 17 Assists Father b Lower Edmonton, Middx
Prudence Amer Dau 15 b High Barnett, Herts
Lucy V(?) Amer Dau 13 b New Bushey, Herts

Hi again Lyz
Really sorry but my search has not been fruitful at all :(
I can't find the family on any other census, but I suppose if they were transient then they may not have been picked up by the census. I can't find Thomas on the 1851 - there is only 1 Amer that shows up for Buckinghamshire. He's not there as Casey either. Nor can I find a birth for Thomas or Nelson. I did, however, find Prudence:
Prudence Amer Sept 1885 Barnet Greater London/Hertfordshire/Middlesex Vol 3a Pg 204
Sorry it's not exciting news. You could try posting on the bucks & herts pages to see if any rootschatters can help there. I'll keep pottering and let you know if I come up with anything.

I wondered if this might possibly be Nelson in 1891?
Manor Lane (Caravan), Lee, London
Sarah Smith Head M 60 Hawker b Poplar
Lucy Smith Dau-in-law M 35 Hawker b Poplar
Gendela(?) Smith Gr-Dau 13 b Barnes, Surrey
Henry Smith Gr-Son 11 b Mortlake, Surrey
Nelson Smith Gr-Son 6 b Willesden, Middx
Fanny Smith Gr-Dau 4 b [...], Kent
Rany Smith Gr-Dau 2 b Wandsworth, Surrey
Infant Smith Gr-Dau under 1m b Lee, Kent
Might be worth keeping on file...

Thank You for all your help, I will keep searching! Lyz

yes Tom and Louisa had their son Owen in 1869 - he had his son Owen in 1896.
We already have the 2 census entries she mentions.
I am only aware that they registered the birth of my granny ( and that was done by the midwife I think )
and they were licensed hawkers - if they had been caught without licenses in 1871 the police would have had them in as vagrants.
BTW you still have to have pedlers licenses nowadays to sell door to door. You have to get them from the police.
Maybe we could find out if the police have old hawkers license records??
The above is what my cousin Jacquline sent me, Lyz
