Title: Barnardos Homes and Packages
Post by: veritypearson on Friday 19 May 06 17:43 BST (UK)
Hello.

I am stuck, well and truly, in relation to my great grandfather James Robbins. It is known that he was a Barnardos boy for some time, he spoke of it when he was alive, although the reasons we do not know.

I believe I may have found a likely census return for him in 1901 showing as living with his father, also James Robbins, so it looks likely they were reunited at some time.

I was wondering if anybody here had applied for a Barnardos package and was it worth it. They say its a 25 pound search fee and 30 pounds for the package IF they find him, so its quite a bit of cash, but if it gets me anywhere it could be worth it.

Do you know which home he would have been in?  The only reason I ask is because I was always told my Grandfather had been a 'Barnado's Boy' but in actual fact when I researched it he had been in a National Children's Home.  If you know where he was you could check who the home belonged to, in case it saves you the fee, it's worth a try.

Good Luck

Daff

It was always referrred to he was a Barnardos Boy. He also lived in the area of Stepney Causeway so it was always assumed that it was the Stepney Causeway home. I am at a loss!

Same here! do some more research...my mother always said she was in a Barnardo's home but she was in fact in the childrens wards of the local Workhouse and then onto another childrens home! we found information in the local Records Office.

Good luck with your search
Suey

ps There is some interesting history here http://www.infed.org/thinkers/barnardo.htm and Stepney Causeway is mentioned
