Hi Tati
Thanks for that. That's a good question. I was told some time ago that George Stoneadge was the son of a gentleman farmer. He then took a fancy to one of my ancestors Mary Jane West, a common country girl and George's parents disapproved of him from seeing such a lowly girl. George then decided to get around this situation by migrating to Canada and marrying her there in 1907 and they lived happily ever after. A publican doesn't quite sound like a 'gentleman' to me but the story might be a work of non-fiction. Stoneadge is an unusual name so I suppose it must be him.
Thanks for your help.

I can't see any other match ... By 1901 father Henry is a Grocer & Baker.

Hi Tati
Out of interest did you find a listing for the son George Henry on the 1901 census? I couldn't find him by doing a name search.

Hi Tati
Thanks very much. I'm still puzzled though.
Where did you search and what name did you use to locate these records?
I can't get find anyone at http://www.1901census.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ when I use the name search of Stoneadge.

Well, this is not the resource I use but have tried a few things on there and giving in a Bessie (no surname) age 44, female, born Petersfield and keyword Itchen Abbas, it comes up with Bessie Stone(a square)dg(a square) ;D ;D

Thanks for that insight. Weird eh?
I'll notify the the site I mentioned above to amend their records.
Thank you for the help you have provided.

Hi - I realise your post was a long time ago, but I just came across it and am just curious about what you were searching for as Henry Stoneadge and Bessie were my great grandparents. Their daughter Frances was my grandmother.

Hi Jen
I made contact with someone who supplied more information and photographs outside of Rootschat.
I think my contact tried to contact someone in New Alresford to obtain more information but they did not want to meet up or continue the conversation. I did get to find out about George Henry and his future in Canada - which entailed 3 West sisters going out there as well but one got diabetes so they returned to New Alresford for a little while and she received treatment in Winchester hospital before her death and then George and Mary returned to Canada.
I know that Frances married married Harry Curtis in 1925 and she died in 1966 in New Alresford aged 78. The had a son John Curtis in 1930. Presumably you are descendant?
-
Thanks for responding. Yes, I'm a descendant. John Curtis was my half uncle and I was lucky to meet him a few times before he died in 2018.
