Hopefully you've been in the chat room and enjoyed 'talking' to other Rootschatters. You may have found it pretty quiet in there when you've been in and possibly even given up. We have recently being trying to encourage use of the chat room, as it is a great facility, by setting some pre-arranged times. We had 30 people in on Friday night between 8pm and midnight (GMT) with a maximum of 14 at any one time, and 16 in last night (maximum of 9 at one time).
It seems that the best time for most people is 8pm onwards on a weekday. So if you are able please go in especially at that time. If you have never been into the chatroom before just click on the icon at the top right of the Rootschat home page marked "Chat" (http://www.rootschat.co.uk/forum/Themes/history/images/chat_icon.gif). If it prompts you to load any software to enter the chat room just click yes. If you have trouble getting in post a message here and I or someone will help.
Here a few suggestions for getting the most out of Rootschat's chatroom
1. Use it!
2. If you go in and there's no one else there, don't come straight out. You'll probably find half a dozen people are doing the same thing and all missing each other.
3. Rather than left clicking on the chat icon to enter the room, right click and select 'open in new window'. This will allow you to keep both a rootschat screen open and the chatroom.
4.When in the chat room keep your speakers switched on so if you nip back into rootschat by switching to the other open window you will hear a tone when someone else enters.
5.By switching windows back into Rootschat you can then post a message on rootschat to say you are in the chatroom. This will ensure everyone one who's logged in will potentially see the message.
6. You can also send personal messages (pm) to other users to get them to join in.
See you in there!

I love the chat room
;D ;D ;D

Hi
I thought I'd take a look at the ChatRoom, but when I click on the link button (& for some reason right clicking isn't working on your site !), all I get is a little message in the middle of the screen saying loading fonts/ loading messages (or something) and loading smiles !! I have waited for quite a while, but nothing else happens !!
Am I doing something wrong ?
Chris
-
Chris,
If you press the Shift button when you click the Chat button, it will open in a new window for you. ;D
Not sure why the RootsChattersBox isn't getting any further than loading fonts. It uses Macromedia Flash - so it might be worth going to www.macromedia.com and downloading the latest version of Flash.
Trystan :)

is there a problem or is it me
thank you

The RootsChatterBox is closed for a bit of work - we should have that part of it back running by tomorrow.
-
Thank you Trystan
I will have to go "cold turkey" for 24hours now , untill up and running again. :(
Thank you for such a lovely site ;D
-
We've just brought it back up again. :)

Hi I don't know if someone has suggested this or not but why not get an IRC channel up and running?
SPaceY

come on Spacey........give us a clue ???whats an IRC channel ???
Dont get too technical though :-[
Joe

I've been told by my partner that IRC stands for "Internet Relay Channel" you can use it with a programe called mIRC http://www.mirc.com/

This is an apology from a bloke that should know better at his age!!
Visited the Chat Room last night, yeah, just to have a look round+' alf a bitter like.
In two ticks I realised it was like dropping into a firework display in a tissue paper parachute!!
Itried to exit gracefully but think said exit was spoiled by Panic. No escape button!
So if offence was caused, my apologies.
Goggy.

I've just been on the chat room for the 1st time. It all happens so quickly. But I will try it again tomorrow. They are really nice.

Its about time I changed my photo.

Hi Spacey,
you research Vallinsin Kent. Please get in touch, as I research Vallins in Kent.
-
What a great spot. Come on the Irish, where are you lads ? You get everything here. Good chat, searches et al. Yesterday evening one of the women even offered to hold my hand. The only thing missing is the pint
-
Hi
I had the same problem getting into the chat room, just a blank screen. UNTIL I changed browsers. ;D
Firefox works for me but Safari didn't for some reason. I hope this helps other rootschatters.

-
Hi and thanks to everyone who greeted me in the Chat Room tonight - Thursday.
My first time and I couldn't type any messages - it wouldn't let me! I'll have to try again with a different browser. Maybe it doesn't like Safari.
See you again - I hope.

Hi Shropshire lass
Glad you like the chatroom. I have not been in for some months due to work and home and family history. Looking to pop in during weekday evenings so may see you and the regulars from Oz and NZ in there. I have a few ancestors in Shropshire mainly from Broseley area. Rowley family and some Jones from Sheinton near Shrewsbury. No doubt I will end up in Wales at some point!
Cheers

Well just to let everyone know...at least for me, when I first came to rootschat, it threw me straight into the chatroom. I loved it, and didn't get to the forums until now...lol. Thank you all for all your help in my reseach, and all the laughs you have given me. I am now a full time chatter, and researcher.

Since June I have had second thoughts on the Chatroom. It is not great from the Irish point of view. Visits to Libraries, Record Offices, looking at books one has borrowed from the library, chatting about genealogy on one of many Messenger sites including the use of Voice facility, reading and answering emails ,surfing for info - if you research properly and live a life there is very little time left to chatter in a chatroom - Under the circumstances I look in to see if anyone needs assistance on the Irish boards and leave as soon as possible.
Christopher

A lot of research is done in the chatroom and since I've been using it, two people have helped me find my, ggggrandparents. I am truly greatful to them. Also, besides the research, it's nice to chat with people from all over the world.

There are usually one or two first class searchers in the chat room at any given time and most people should get some assistance fairly rapidly. I agree with you gjil, it is pleasant chatting to people from the other side of the world and learning a little about their country.

Hi Ticker.
Many thanks for tips on chat room. I have been in a few times now and everyone has been lovely and supportive, funny, helpful, and loads of tea and sympathy, when things are going wrong. I enjoy it immensely. Newbies like me, please don't feel shy, just laugh along. cheers Ferndale
-
Hi Ferndale
Welcome to RootsChat! ;)
I'm glad you like the chat room -see you in there some time! :D
Best wishes
Ticker
-
Hi Ticker,
Thanks for your reply. Thought I used to be a good "multi tasker" till I got into the chat room. Its hard to think, type , keep up, go get a coffee, and have a giggle at the same time, not to mention have a cigi. Cheers Dale
-
Ferndale the trick is to surround yourself with all the supplies that you may need. Maybe we should all invest in comodes - eek what a thought :o
-
Hi wheeldon,
How 'bout a theroms. That might save one trip.... On second thoughts maybe not ;D
-
WHY, do I keep getting frozen out... >:(
-
I am definitely not a proficient multi tasker on the computer, the chat rooms scare the hell out of me as everythings goes faster than I can keep up with, I get all confused and muddled. ::) ::)
Patrish.
-
Patrish -
I tried the chatroom for the first time last time. We are in agreement. It was way too fast for me ... or maybe I was way too slow for the chatroom.
yn9man
-
I've started to become and addict, after my early reticence. Pop in there quite often. I find it a nice cozy place to natter but also to help and be helped :)
Mind you I can touch type - if not always accurately ;D
Gadget
-
It was way too fast for me ... or maybe I was way too slow for the chatroom.
yn9man
Sometimes the chatroom can be manic but it can be very quiet.
Keep popping in.
If it's quiet you'll soon find you're feet.
Everyone is friendly and helpful.
-
I can touch type to Gadget but my brain cant keep up with my fingers and it comes out gibberish sometimes. ;D
Exact example I had to alter brain, I had typed brian. ;D ;D
Patrish.
-
I was going to say the same thing, my touch typing has always been excellent, got 55 wpm at college, but I just sit there and can't think what to say. Particularly with people I don't know very well, but then I am the same in real life.
Me I'm the shy one stuck in the corner at parties!!!!

Back (in what seems like weeks years ago but in reality years ago) when I was in my high school typing class I couldn't type without making several errors per minute (EPM) .... probably seconds in my case. In fact, I had more EPM than WPM. I was asked to give up my "typewriter" so another student could learn how to type . Didn't hurt my feelings for say more than 40 years but I'm getting over it .... but ever slowly just like I type.

Now I know who was standing on my feet / toes the other night ... ;D ;D
One must be able to type, think quickly and be VERY organized to participate in a chat room. I am almost there ....
Bearkat -
How can I "find my feet" when Kerryb is standing on them?? :) :)
yn9man
-
Well we could all agree a time and jump/step in :D
Gadget
-
Thats a good idea Gadget, we could all "mug" the chatroom. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Patrish.
-
LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D yn9man, I'm so sorry I was standing on your toes! It felt like there was something there.
Now if I had some old friends to talk to I'm sure I could learn to chat, type and think at the same time and even do a bit of small talk!
Kerry :)
-
Why not go into the chatroom together and set up your own room?
You could then have a nice slow chat with your mates. Hopefully there'd be enough room that you wouldn't have to stand on anyones toes.
-
Think we need a sub-poll on this :D
How about Chatroom2?
But I like Chatroom 1 - they won't bite :)
What time?
Gadget
-
Gadget , Patrish-
Sounds like a right honorable thing to do. :) :)
Since you are so good at "Administrivia" Gadget, (for example, Number of Rootschatters poll" , co ordinating the Scottish Rootschat meeting next year; etc. ) you could do the same thing here ... (optional days, times, etc.) and see what's best for everyone to "mug" the chatroom would be. ;D ;D
Kerry -
Thanks for the apology. Greatfully accepted. You'll be happy to know the "limp" I acquired the other night after being stuck in the corner is just about gone. Should be completely healed in order to climb halfway up or halfway down to the Scottish Rootschat meeting next year ;)
How "old" do your "iffy" friends have to be. Some of us may be old but not old enough ... you can't teach an old dog new tricks (especially multi tasking) sort of thing. Some of us are old but in age only. And then some of us are just plain old.
I sure the following multitask (chewing gum / tobacco )was a mere oversight.
Small talk ... do you mean using short, little words or good old fashioned "over the fence" gossip. ;D ;D
yn9man
-
We could always call a room the "slow talkers/typers room"
Sarah :)
-
Not sure if I'd be allowed in there, Sarah ;D ;D ;D
I think that, looking at the profiles, late afternoon (UK time) might be a poss. Would it be possible to have a mod there as well to help with any probs?
Gadget
-
Could be if we plan a day and a time.
What about early evening maybe 6.30ish ?? Gives me time to get in from work and have a bite to eat :P
Sarah
-
Think we need a sub-poll on this :D
How about Chatroom2?
As long as it isn't Chatroom101. That would really blow out those of nervous (chatroom) dispositions, like me. I was pretty blitzed by the different colours (sensible idea, mind you).
JULIAN
-
As I know very little about that chatrooms it makes no difference to me, also as I don't go out to work I could fit in with what others would prefer.
Patrish.
-
Patrish, we are chatting in there now. Come on in and see
-
Oh dear sorry I missed that message Lesanne I went off to bed. :( I was very tired last tonight. Perhaps I can catch up next time.
Patrish.
-
I use the chatroom alot, nearly every day. I too was very scared when I first went in, especially when everyone jumps at you and says hello as soon as you pop in! I must admit I ran away the first time! I had never used a chat room before.
But now I use it for a chat to friends I have made in there, and if I get stuck I know someone in there will help me. Everyone in the chat room was new once, and remembers how it feels to be new. No one expects anyone to be a genius at computers or at chatting. Just go in there and watch for a few times. Go at your own pace, it's not a race. Relax, and when you feel ready, jump in with a question. They wont bite!! They love to help if they can.
Go on, give it a go!
Remember, they don't know who you are if you do make a mistake!!
Cya in there,
Red ;D
-
I'll have a go if we fix up a time!
Kerry
-
I like the idea of "slow talkers / typers" but unfortunately that would leave me out since I still haven't mastered the skill of multi tasking yet. :) :)
Just pick a time Gadget, and I will try to participate. Now that we have gone back to "real time" here in the US and I don't have to work any more (or less) I am up to participating ... or attempting to participate.
yn9man
-
I just pop in the CR every so often. I'm waiting for you all to come up with something. Sarah has suggested 6.30 pm (-ish). Not good for me but my participation isn't vital, so over to you, folks ........
Gadget
-
Don't worry about me either. Since I am currently located on the East Coast of the US there is the time difference of six hours. Guess what I am trying to say is my good times probably wouldn't be your good times.
however, I am willing to give it a try and participate. Just let me know when.

Good to see you are doing well Red.
Are you still practicing those bits i taught you?

Gadget -
Did you ever decide on a name, day or time for the "slow typers" chat room?
yn9man

No. I think we were waiting for the slow typers :D
Sarah volunteered 6.30 pm but no one came back.
It really is up to you slow typers, I think.
Gadget

Gadget
If we were to wait for the real slow typers (such as I) we would still be waiting and a decision would never be reached ... or typed. ;D ;D
And then you add "think" ... thats multitasking ... I'm feeling pressure
yn9man
-
All these decisions. :o You gotta get IN first. That's takes some doing...
If, by pure fluke you do happen to get there, you try staying...Huh.. ::)
-
The couple of occassions I have been in, got in and stayed there until I decided to leave, which to be fair was not very long, but perhaps its much busier now, it was some time ago.
-
Be brave enough and come in. Just sit and watch even I lose the plot sometimes and I have been going in there for a year now. Met some wonderful, helpful people in there. 8)
gjil :)
-
Lesanne -
I'm with you. :) :)
The getting IN will be the hard part.
gjil -
Thanks for the encouragement. ;)
yn9man

I don't like butting in on other people's conversations so I sit there for five minutes and then sneak off again.
Would people think me rude if I just try to join in?
Kerry

Would people think me rude if I just try to join in?
Absolutely not Kerry :)
It's alot of fun and you can meet lots of people.
Karen
-
On the rare occassions I have been in I found other people talk to me first Kerry.
-
I have not been in the chat room in ages, used to go there a lot (even got banned once ....... mistaken identity ;D ;D ;D Sarah will vouch for me ;D) but I popped in the other night.
I very warm welcome and it was nice to see old friends there. Rleach is brilliant, she works so hard to find answers for everyone.
Would so recommend a visit
Cal 8)
-
Ican see I am going to have to visit again then!!
Kerry ;D
-
Guess I will join in too. Will Gadget be there to protect and assist us?
With trepidation, ;D
yn9man
-
Until my Broadband line gets fixed, I will only be there to protect and assist you in spirit :)
But, my advice is, don't be scared. Once you click on Chat, the screen will load and when you're in, people will great you. You then say hello in the text bos under the main screen. Read the conversations and go from there. No one is threatening. You could say that you're new to it and people will be really helpful and understanding.
We are a friendly bunch on here really ;D
Gadget

Gadget -
Best of luck in getting your Broadband fixed.
Spirits are good. :) :) Maybe indulge in some before entering the chat room.
I just need to build up some courage. The chat room seems so busy and hectic though.
yn9man

Hello Yn9man
I do hope that you have received the e-mail message that I sent you through the Rootschat direct message sytem. Hopefully, this will encourage and help you to join us in the Chatroom.
I certainly look forward to that time - as indeed do all the other Chatters.
Just go for it!!

Thats what un-nerves me about it, it all goes so fast

wheeldon - :) :)
Appreciate your offer. How will I be able to participate if I am holding your hand with one hand and in my other hand is a glass of Pinot Noir celebrating the 39th anniversay of Gadget and her hubbie? Multi tasking isn't all that great.
gjil -
Thanks for looking our for me. ;D
I assume 8:00 pm England time or 2000 hours or I guess by the clock on the wall in less than an hour.
Better go get ready ....
yn9man
-
Patrish,
its no too bad depending on how many people are in there. It varys every day and night. All you do is sit and watch and if you feel like joining in thats fine. Sometimes we are doing look ups up for each other and other times just general conversation with a laugh.
Yes, yn9man 2000 hours.
gjil ;D 8)

gjil - ;D ;D ;D
Many thanks for your assistance and looking out for me last night in the chat room. Sorry I couldn't stay long (had long distance phone call) but next time I will. It wasn't as scary an experience as I expected. It will take time to get used to the speed of conversations and of course learning the short hand.
Enjoyed the conversation even though I was probably several minutes behind .... at best.
Again many thanks. Looking forward to my next experience.
yn9man
-
Ever so glad that you went in, yn9man :)
I'm back to full connectivity now, so maybe I'll pop in again soon.
Patrish - have you ventured in again yet?
Gadget

No Gadget, no y yet, but I will do, probably Wed/Thu/Frid evening. ;)

I've been in, and I survived 8)
I even helped someone :)
Give it a go !
JULIAN
-
I've been in, and I survived
I tried when I first registered...so many people said Hello & welcome all at once, I got scared, :o panicked, ??? & haven't been back since LOL!! ;D ;D
-
Gadget -
Thanks for the nice words. :) :).
I "dropped in" for a while but the pace of the conversation at times was overwhelming but I did survive. Will go back in and maybe try and board or two.
01debbie -
I agree so many people, or it seemed, said hello, welcome. They made me feel welcome which I appreciated. I had a harder time following the conversation and the "short hand". :) :)But I will try again.
yn9man
-
Debbie :)
I think that I was in when you came in and left pretty sharpish. It can be daunting but having people say hello is nicer than being ignored ;) You just have to say Hello once. It's when you're there that you have to keep saying hello to everyone else who comes in afterwards.
Another etiquette note: it's also best to tell people that you are leaving and say Goodbye :D
Gadget
-
Hi Gadget....profuse apologies for legging it so quick without saying Goodbye :-[ I do rmember sayoing hello back to every individual & wondering how I was going to keep up LOL!!
I'd never been in a chat room before & didn't know about the etiquette...but I do now!! ;D
Maybe I'll try again soon :-\
Debbie
-
Gadget - :)
A very good point. Learn something new everyday on this site. ;)
Wasn't aware of chatroom etiquette since I had never been into a chatroom before. I didn't know how to exit gracefully after I received a phone call. In fact, I wasn't even sure how to log / sign out of the chatroom. :-\
Next time I promise to participate more.
yn9man
-
When you go in again, play around with the various options that should appear above the box that you type in. Here you'll find shortcuts for Be Back Soon, Busy, etc. and even a little smiley telephone that you can insert to say what has happened :)
Oh - and also you can choose the colour of your text so that you don't get mixed up with anyone else.
Gadget
-
I have had to give up going into the chatroom for several reasons.
1st.......I get a window saying it will be slow.
2nd......My mouse becomes frozen, so cannot type anything.
3rd........ The site disappears.
Never had trouble on other sites, and as I am inclined to go suddenly the other chat members must think me very rude.
helina
-
Phew.... well at least I did get that right, the couple of times I have been in I have always said goodbye to everyone. :)
-
I think the first time I went in I said 'hello' and then muttered something about going :(
I think having different text colours is perhaps the most useful. It gets quite easy to mix people up when things are going fast.
Gadget :D
-
Gadget -
Thanks for the additional hints. I looked around the "room" before I entered hoping I wouldn't make any serious errors. Didn't take long for me to err.
To show how bright I am, I didn't even notice the different colors for a fair amount of time. I didn't see the smiley telephone or "short hand". gjil was of considerable help in getting me started. She sent me some of the "short hand" while I was in the chatroom.
The different colors do make it easy though unless you can't tell colors.
yn9man :D
-
I had never noticed them either, so will make a point of looking when I do go.
-
I'm a very slow typer so I don't go in! :(
Jayson
-
Jayson, go in when it's quiet or go in and say hello and just have watch of the conversation - you could just drop a witty line in now and again and everyone will think you are mysterious but ever so funny ;) 8)
-
Wheeldon...how do you know when it's going to be quiet? I'm sure that when I clicked on the chat button, I was straight in & visible to all :o
Do you mean when there's not so many users online?
Sorry if that's a daft question!! ;D
Debbie
-
The window that comes when I try to enter chat room says..................
A script in the movie is causing adobe flash player 9 to run slowly. If it continues to run your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort?
yes/no.
helina
-
Wheeldon -
Could you let us know when its going to be quiet? ;D ;D
Jayson -
I too am a real slow typer but I was able to get in and enjoyed my brief time. The other rootschatters were very kind and friendly. I think it just takes a little practice.
yn9man
-
Idea!!! maybe all us scaredy cats could sneak in & have a practice chat when it is quiet ;D :D ;D
-
01debbie -
A practice chat ... marvelous, wonderful idea ... but how will we know it is quiet? ;D :D ::)
yn9man
-
yn9man,
::) :-\ ::) I haven't worked that bit out yet LOL
Debbie
-
Hi
I use the chat room frequently(ok daily and never any dinner made lol) ::) and have done ever since I first joined roots I love it, have made loads of new friends there.
Just take it slowly, I think on the whole we are a happy bunch and love to meet new people ;D just talk when you want, we do look ups, swap recipes, have a grumble if we need to everyone listens and we love it when someone has had a good find, or met someone or broke down a wall.
Please come in and join us ;)
Jane
-
debbie -
Take your time. It will give us more time to practice for the practice chat. :) :)
yn9man
-
I was straight in and visible to all ,cause the all spoke to me which was very nice of them. I find it hard to know what to say :-\ :-\ but the others seem to chat away merilly. :)
-
patrish -
Thats kind of what I found. All say hello or welcome and continued on with their business. I will go back once Gadget gets the "slow typers" ;D ;D ;D room up and operating.
Hard to keep up with the conversation. Must get easier as one spends additional time in the chatroom.
yn9man :)
-
yn9man,
I think we should just get brave, hold each others hand & both go in together...what'd ya think ;)
-
Please, please, please :( It ain't nothing to do with me. It is possible that if a few of you go in together at a prearranged time to then hop into Chatroom 2, which is not usually used but if you all clicked on that taband went in, it would be. I think :-\
Gadget
-
If you had a pre-arranged evening I could create a temporary room for you to use called something like the "slow typers room" just for the night/day :)
Sarah
-
Oh Sarah, what a wonderful idea!! It could be like the learners lounge ;D :D ;D
Debbie
-
Me too please. ;D Thats a really nice gesture Sarah.
-
I'll come in as well, if you want me to, but my Broadband line is so unpredictable with all this weather. I've had quite a few 'outs' today.
I did 'drag' Julian in a while ago and he quite enjoyed it (well, he said it was easier with someone there who knew him ;) ) and now his OH has taken him in hand :)
It's really date and time.
Gadget
-
Well being such a busy, in demand person...I'm free any evening ;D :D ;D
I work all week so daytimes aren't so easy.
Gadget, what's an OH?
Debbie

Hi Debbie :)
I use it to mean Other Half - partner etc.
Gadget
For a list of the more usual 'chat shortcuts' see for example:

There are some threads on them on RootsChat as well.

Day - ?
Attendees - Debbie, Patrish, yn9man, Pels, Kerry (?), Julian (?), Sarah, me (ADSL line willing) - any more?
Gadget :)

Hi gadget,
Thanks for the quick response. I've been sat here thinking of allsorts...even Old Ham LOL!!! ;D
Debbie
Right, I'll now go and tell Mrs B she's an Old Ham ;D
Or if you do venture into the Chat Room, you might even have the opportunity to tell her yourself :D

For a list of the more usual 'chat shortcuts' see for example:

Fascinating stuff on that link. In particular I know now what ROFLMAOASTC means
-
You get to learn lots on Rootschat, Julian :)
Are you going to join us?
Also, would it help if I did some annotated images of the various parts of the Chatroom screen?
If I don't get an answer, I'll put some up here.

Hi Folks
On only one cup of coffee and no breakfast, I went into the Chatroom to get some images for you to see. I asked everyone's permission to do this. I have blocked out the conversations :)
You will probably recognise the screen piccies but hope that the annotated images help with changing text, etc. and explain the various options.
First, the main Chatterbox screen
(http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=142532.0;id=30813;image)
Next the bottom bar and text box, where you type your message:

Clicking the first button:

Clicking Options:

And the others:

And finally,if you want to have a private chat - like PMs:

At 6.30.pm I can only do Thursday or Friday this week, any help to you others?
-
Hi Patrish
I have a school presentation this Thursday & probably won't get back until around 8.30pm, but Friday is good for me :)
-
Thanks that great Gadget, mind you speaking for myself I dont know about changing colours and fonts, I will have enough to worry about without that. : but the status facility will be most helpful.
Debbie Friday is o.k with me, have to see what the others say. :)
-
Cool Gadget thanks for that!
I must try the chatterbox again sometime but I can't make Friday evening, it's my fight night with my brother!!!! ::) ::) ::)

Have you noticed there's always one!! ::) ::) Can I sit quietly and watch please? :)
Pels, My mother always told me to be careful of the quiet ones who want to watch :o :D ;D
You can watch on the understanding that if all goes well, you promise to join in. By all goes well, I mean that we're still there, hopefully talking to each other, for at least 5 minutes!! ;D
Debbie
-
Thats a shame Kerry :(, that fine by me Pels, :) dont know how active I will be, :-\ what we will talk about? ??? ; I can see us lot all sitting there and saying nothing. ;D ;D ;D
-
Gadget, sorry, how rude of me :-[ Thank you for taking the time & trouble to do the screens for us. I'm sure we'll all use all of the available functions with ease...ha! Yeah right ;D
Kerry, we don't even know when they'll be able to set up a 'learners lounge' yet, so you may still be able to join us.
Patrish...I was thinking, I hope it won't be like an awkward telephone conversation but I teach conversation skills to children (amongst other things!!), I'll have us going in no time!!! :D ;D :D
Debbie

There's always plenty too talk about. Last night, whilst helping with look ups, we talked about food, alcohol and all the cities we have visited and of course the cricket from the gloating aussies. ;D

I won't say anything unless spoken to ;) ;) ;)

I think my husband would laugh his head off at the thought of me sitting quietly anywhere! ;D ;D ;D
I am sitting here typing as fast as possible to practice!
I can't even text quickly .. .. brain and fingers never seem to work together for some reason? :-\
Right you lot, I suppose we will have to learn the jargon! ;D ;D
Can think of things to say but I will be chattering to myself because everyone will have gone on to the next topic!! You will then wonder who the mad woman is who keeps giving all the wrong answers! :D :D :D
See what I mean, can't even keep up with this!! :-[
-
Right you lot, I suppose we will have to learn the jargon!
Had a look, don't like it!! I might have to be me for a little while!
Patience my friends, is a virtue .. .. ::) Lol, LOL, lol :-\
:D :D :D
-
As an oldie (but goodie) who has used the chat room for over two years......let me say this....
I don't use jargon....Ohhhh....Well once in a while I might LOL (Laughing out loud) but that's the scope of my jargon !!!!!
You don't have to answer every comment that is made.....Many times there are multiple conversations going on at once.....fun to watch....and sometimes it's fun to barge in and stick my 2 cents in!!! Nobody minds.
Lots of research gets done in the chat room......and it is liberally sprinkled with laughter !!
Come on in......we are a fun lot!
India ....63 year old chatter!.......my daughter thinks I'm bonkers!
;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I recommend going in after midnight GMT and having a natter to Indie and her chums - great stuff :)
Weekends are very quiet.
Pels - you don't need the jargon and if you can master those daft fielding positions, you can do anything ;D ;D ;D ;D

Many thanks for doing the chatroom images / screens. Helped immensely since I was afraid to "click" on any of the buttons in case I would commit mayhem in the chatroom. what does the "options" box allow you to do?
Is there a dress code for the "learners lounge"? :D :D
Pels / Gadget -
Why is the subject of cricket off limits?. Being from the USA I no little about the game and would like to learn.
01debbie -
It'll probably be crowded in the corner with so many of us wallflowers. ;D
Will try and join in Thursday night. Need to rush off now to begin learning jargon / shorthand and practice my slow typing

Hi yn9man
See the fourth image in my little message. Basically, you can change the colour of the various backgrounds - a bit like interior decoration :D :D :D :D
You could ask Barbara (Tephra) about cricket!

THE RULES OF CRICKET
You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that's in the side that's in, goes out, and when he's out, he comes in and the next man goes in until he's out.
When they are all out the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.
Sometimes you get men still in and not out.
When both sides have been in and out including the not-outs, that's the end of the game.
Howzat?
-
Even I'm on a sticky wicket with that one! ;D

Thanks for the rules :-\ ??? ;) of Cricket ...
Got it ... or at least I will once I figure which side is which,
who is in and who is out,
why they may be or are in or out,
what they did to be in or out, and
if you are not in does that make you out or does not out make you in?
Can you be not in, in, not out, or out at the same time?
I think I needs another glass of vino .... :) ::)

For some strange reason it didn't matter either!

Absolutely Pels, I found myself answering two questions in one anyway, because the conversation moved at such a pace ::) ::) ::) ::)
Don't think it mattered though, most people already think I am mad :D :D :D :D

But if you are not discussing FH what do you talk about. ???
Patrish - You of all people can always find something to talk about - this has just struck me as being quite comical! Your presence in there would be an asset! :)
Kerry and I were quaking in our slippers and Gadget washed her hair especially! ::) ::)

But Pels you did so well while I was in :D it was great to see you in the room, hopefully I will be about when some of you others may come in, would love to chat ;D

Well I would not say that Pels, I feel I am quite proficient in answering to subjects already posted but If you look around you will find that I start very few. I think 2 or 3 since I first joined. :-\ except for look up requests.

I really thought I was fully prepared for my 8:00pm return to the Chatroom tonight. Now I am getting anxious and sense a panic attack ......
People say not to worry ... jump right in .... but then I read ....
you need to think and type at the same time (What happens if you don't do both at the same speed?)
Gadget needed to go and do her hair. (Is this because Nutty1966, Pels, Kerry, Sarah and others could in fact SEE her?)
Proficiency in answering to subjects already posted? (Yikes ... I haven't received the memo on what to prepare for yet)
Answering two questions in one (is this a different form of multi tasking?)

See Sarah's message #165 above, Patrish. I think she's suggesting a bit later but would like to be PMed if needed.

Speaking of being out of the loop .... I thought we were meeting today at 20:00 so I went in and I didn't recognize a soul. :'( :'(
I won't take the snub personally though ....
Fortunately or unfortunately I had a *******phone call so I had to sign off fairly quickly. Now back to rootschat and see where the time is / may be for tomorrow night. I guess from the thread about 8pm or so. Hopefully the gusty winds and possible snow don't interfere with my connection. See you then ... possibly.

Thanks, found it now what a twit I am, I did go to the previous page but did not scroll up far enough. I have never noticed the numbers before. :-[
I am free most of the evening, hubbys on nights so I dont mind what time.so perhaps I will see you there Kerry. :) dont know how long I will last there though. ;D ;D
Patrish.
-
Hopefully will see you there also yn9man. In my mind I keep referring to you as Youngman. :)
-
You'll be fine Patrish, it really is quite easy. Just say hello to anyone who says hello to you when you arrive and sit and wait awhile.
I just joined in when I felt able to and said bye when I left. The difficult bit is when there are more than one conversation going on all at the same time, but I think Gadget has mentioned different colours for different names, I found that helped a lot to keep track of conversations and tune out on the bits I didn't want to know.
Anyway hopefully 'see' you tomorrow night after 8 pm!
Kerry :) :)

Thanks for that Kerry. ;)

Good morning Patrish, Pels & anyone else,
Before I go off & get my brain mushed by work, is it room one with the big kids, or room 2 we're meeting in? I'll pop in around 8pm.
Gadget, can you go straight into room 2 without being 'seen' by room 1?
BTW, I think of 'Youngman' too!! :D
Debbie

Morning to you too Debbie.
Oh no do you have to choose which room you want to go into ? havent got a clue how to do that. ??? ???
I just thought if one was full you overspilled into the other one, ??? rather like a car park :)
So its around 8ish then?

I'll be there!!!

Hi Patrish,
I just sent you a PM...do you want to dive in now? I have a few minutes before work & Ann W is there, she'll look after us ;D
Debbie

Ok then , I'll take the plunge and see what happens. as Kerry is there as well, just for a few minutes as I have to go out this morning.
-
I do hope so, I don't want to be there with no one that I know. I will find that quite daunting.
Everyone knows each other on rootschat. We read each other posts, even if we don't reply.
I've always found the chatroom very friendly.
BUT - :D be warned, it is very addictive.

I humbly apologize for suddenly leaving the slow typers chatroom this evening.
My screen started to act "strange" and then "froze" while Julian and I were chatting.
Oh, bye the way, it was fun while it lasted and I will definitely go in again.
Hopefully the situation with my computer won't happen again.

Good morning yn9man,
It happened to me too when I went in the other night. Luckily, I'd said goodbye & then tried to insert a smiley from the drop down boox on the screen & pow, everything froze.
Anyway, as you said it was fun & I'll be going back in too. I was amazed at how quickly an hour flew by in the company of new friends ;)
Debbie
P.S. I wonder if Pels is still in the corner??? ;D :D ;D

P.S. I wonder if Pels is still in the corner???
Pels is always in the corner Debbie!! ;D ;D
I must admit it is an experience and I quite enjoyed it!
Looking forward to the day when I can go a bit faster, I think Sarah said my typing is OK - that must mean it's the brain and the reaction time that's seizing up!
Sarah was wonderful last night wasn't she? We all owe her our gratitude for coming along and helping us out .. .. :-*
;D ;D
-
Hi Pels,
Glad you enjoyed it too. I have to say though, I thought your typing was fine. The comments you made were in time with others, not ages behind. I type by looking at the keyboard & found by the time I'd finshed my comments, another 10 had appeared on the screen! ;D
Yes, Sarahs help, & Gadgets too, was much appreciated. Also the 'big kids' who popped by to see what was going on, it was like having loads of Aunts & Uncles encouraging us to keep going!! ;D :D ;D
I'll definately go back...when I've got some spare time. I can see it becoming VERY addictive 8)
Debbie

Me too Debbie - another addiction!!! ::) ::) ::)
It was fun though, although it got a bit fast and furious towards the end.

This is addicts' corner this morning, I see :D
Glad you all came in. It's not that difficult is it? Everybody seemed to master everything. Kerry colour coordinated her text colour with her hair, etc. My line even behaved - a first ::)
I think the CR1's decided that they were missing the action - sad ;D ;D ;D
A password is definitely needed ;)
A big thank you to Sarah for arranging it.
Great ;D

Yes thanks Sarah for your encouragement and for arranging the slow typers room! :) :)
Perhaps we could meet up again sometime once Pels has recovered ;) ;)
Kerry :)

This is addicts' corner this morning, I see
LOL!!
Kerry, I think that would be a great idea! Oh, I mean to arrange another chat. Maybe we could all find a day & time that suits all & have a regular weekly meet...what does everyone think? Then if someone can't make it, they know we'll still be there the next week...obviously to start a new chat, not still having the one from the week before LOL ;D ;D ;D
I'd better get a wiggle on, I have a million things to do today & I'm still sat here in my dressing gown :o :-[ :o
Have a great day....what am I saying? I'll be popping back & forth all day :D

Hi Gadget,
Would love to see picture of your Tom, I found this on the internet....
Scottish-born Thomas Burgess named the community of Bala after the Bala Lake District in Wales. He arrived in 1868 and set up a sawmill on the Mill Stream. In time he also opened a general store, bakeshop, blacksmith shop and supply boat service and post office.
In 1917 the Burgess family helped establish a hydroelectric facility on the site of Thomas’s original sawmill. This generating station supplied power for much of the Medora and Wood Townships. Nala officially became a town in 1914. Dr. A.M. Burgess, a son of Bala’s founder Thomas Burgess, was the first Mayor in Bala.
Bala is now famous for the bar/concert's that it has in the summertime. Great times :)

That's him - my first cousin 4 times removed Karen :D To think that when I was over there in the late 60s, I knew nothing about all this :(
I hope to put his photo on my website in the next couple of days. There's masses of stuff on this family and it will take me ages to write it all up. They were an awkward bunch - minds of their own they had ::) ::) ::) :P :P :P
Thanks you so much for popping in last night. It was really appreciated. Maybe we could have a Canadian session in there some time :)
Gadget
PS - OK then here's a little one of him as the postman in, I think, 1894 :)
-
What's wrong with Gadget's teeth? :D :o :D
-
They fell out when she was here earlier!! :( :(
-
You've heard of that expression biting your head off?
Well............................. >:(
Too much chattering in the back row. Back to the Chatroom, you two.

Well done all of you who ventured into new room last night! Hope to see you in main room soon.
Always good to have new folks coming in. Don't worry if it all goes bit fast. I found it fast when I started and my typing isn't the best.
lots of nice folks in there who can help with your research.
Come and join us we'd love to see you all

Thanks for being the mod and setting up the slow typers room. Much appreciated.

Not exactly sure what I did to the computer to have it act up like it did last night. It was quite windy and very very cold so maybe that caused the sudden seizure. Was embarrassed I couldn't get back in since Julian and I were theonly two slow typers in the room at the time. Guess because we were the slowest typers and couldn't exit as quickly as everyone else.
Did have a delightful time but was worried about all the time Pels spent in the corner. someone should watch to see what she was doing or does there.
Gadget -
Overall it was a very positive experience. The only problem I had was I could never get the colour to change. I will review your graphs / screens to see how thats done.
Definitely need a password. Another administrivia job for ya.
I have discovered the reasons behind my slow typing. It takes too long for my thoughts to get from my brain to my fingers ..... problem is that my arms are too long. If I shorten them the thoughts will travel much quicker.
Better go and check my new message before wine time.

Its a shame I couldent make it last time, it sounded good. :)

Changing the text colour:
If you click on the coloured button just above the typing strip (labelled Text colour, below) a popup box will appear with 'web friendly' colours, just click on which ever you would like and your text colour will change. To make your text bold, click on the 'B' button.

It's best to choose a colour that other people aren't using :)

Ann - thankyou, I'm sure we'll get there in the end, grown up people behaving like children! Or children trying to act like people, not quite sure which!! ::) ::)
Patrish, you would have enjoyed it last night, we didn't know what to say either! Kerry and I resorted to our favourite holiday destinations at one point! ;D ;D
Did have a delightful time but was worried about all the time Pels spent in the corner. someone should watch to see what she was doing or does there.
:D :D :D
Nearly forgot, I couldn't get in - we must remember to tell Patrish that! I think that was where I went wrong the first time, when I went into that room on my own and couldn't get back out!!
::)
-
I got private message pleas from Pels, Patrish, and had to give her instructions on how to get to the correct room - she managed it with panache :)

Panache - a grand or flamboyant manner; verve; style; flair
Not quite how I remember it? :-[ :-[

Thats what I THOUGHT I tried last night. Very nice colour palette to choose from. I selected one of the yellows since no one else was using at the time. Print colour still came out white. Will try again next time I enter.
When will we get our password?
Ann -
Thanks for the nice comments. I am sure we will eventually end up in the room with the fast talkers. But first we need to practice thinking faster, practice typing faster and practice getting out of the corner faster.
Pels -
I believe Gadget meant getting out of the corner with panache. ;) ;)

Sorry I have been away for a bit , have I missed something here. ???

Pels is one up on me at the moment. I don't know how to start a private conversation while you are in the chat room??
Kerry

Neither do I Kerry. :) Love your little father christmas
-
Morning all,
Maybe Pels came out of the room to PM Gadget & then went back in? But it sounds like she would've been doing the Okey Cokey in & out of her corner!! ;D
Of course...if we were brave, we'd be having this conversation IN the chatroom :D
Debbie...in a very cold & frosty Southampton

If you look at the last image inmy little guidance message, it tells you how :)
Basically, click on the person's name and a little dialogue box pops up and you type in the bottombar of that.

Above is a blank space where Patrish should be - where has the robin gone??
You learn how to do things fast when you're in a tight spot!
i.e. In one common room on your own, knowing full well everyone else, is somewhere else, but you can't get there!!
:D :D
Sorry the robin has returned!! :)
-
The 'weather' has started :( :( :( :( :( :(
Otherwise I would suggest a quick pop in for you all to experiment with messaging but you could go in without me, I'm sure ;)
Don't be afraid - just experiment - have a go :) That's my motto for this life. Otherwise you'll miss so much :)
See you all in the Spring - Pels you have my mobile number :)

Just seen the countryfile weekahead forecast. :( :(

The weather certainly isn't looking good.
Hope you've got plenty of food in and wrap up warm.

Hi all, recovered from my mis- hap this morning.
Pels, Kerry posted that message telling me where her smileys came from so my Robin would not be there, I am still around just. ;)
Havent seen the weather but I gather its bad for Gadget, hope she will be o.k. or if you are online, are.

Hello Rosemary,
Warm welcome to Rootschat.
I don't think you are on the topic you need.
If you want the chatroom, have a look at the top of page to Chatterbox.
Is it someone that posted on this thread with those surnames? Then the Surname interest might help. Also up there at the top.
or just reply and I'll see if I can help. I remeber very well the first time I used this site... I nearly gave up.... :o
