Title: boyce 1841 ditcheat area of somerset
Post by: boycefamilytree on Tuesday 16 May 06 16:48 BST (UK)
i am looking for 1841 census info on Mary Boyce .
Mary was found on the 1851  Merryland ,Ditcheat, Somerset age 71 Pauper/ Spiner ( i think it says Hay next to it ) she was born East Pennard and is listed as a Widower.
On 1851 census she has her grandson Edward with her but no parents anywhere. He was born 4 April 1843 in Ditcheat.

Can someone with access to 1841 census find Mary Boyce aged abt 61  born East Pennard Somerset ,perhaps her husband or Edwards parents may still also be living with her aswell.

1841 census

All born in county

Edward Boyce, age 50, ag lab
Mary Boyce, age 60

and next door

William Boyce, age 25, ag lab
Jane Boyce, age 20
Fred Boyce age 5 months

HO 107 943 8
folio 18 page 12
West Pennard, Somerset

The 1841 does not give relationships and also ages over the age of 15 were generally rounded down to the nearest 5.

Thanks for the info a while ago, This is where my confusion was with my Boyce tree.
It seems between 1790 and 1850 they were using both HORE and BOYCE names on Birth , Marriages , Deaths and Census forms .
Although they were shown as Boyce on 1841 census young Frederic Boyce died very young and is shown as Frederic HORE a few years later , son of William & Jane HORE ( Not Boyce ) although the same people.

The Grandfather shown as Edward BOYCE living next door was previously known as Edward HORE and he changed his name over to BOYCE between 1815 & 1841 census .
I don’t know if this was legally sorted through a court or due to parentage rights .  They seemed to change over their name quite easily .
