Since Sharon posted this link on Rootschat I have found some useful leads.
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi.cfm?CountyID=1
for which I would like to thank her :D
The Limerick board has at the moment closed , you can still see the names that have been indexed.
I wrote to this feedback link,
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/feedback.cfm
and asked if they intended restarting the site, this was the reply
Thank you for your query regarding Limerick Ancestry. Talks are currently in
progress regarding its re-opening. And until this happens I can't say if any
further records will be added to the existing database
May I suggest all of you who are researching in Limerick create a demand :P and do the same.
Thank you
Patricia ;)

The ancestry center was a joint venture by Limerick city council and Limerick county council.
It closed February 4th 2004, due to lack of funds from these sources.
The two council website are as follows:
http://www.limerickcity.ie/
http://www.lcc.ie/
I would suggest for now posting your support here (please just post support, not discussion so a proper tally can be formatted at the end). Please include your first name and city/country.
If we get enough posts here I will forward this thread on to individual councilors and local newspapers.

I would suggest that someone set up a free online petition. The address is:
http://www.petitiononline.com/petition.html
I am a cancer survivor and there is a petition on that site for OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS stamp for the post office that has accumulated over 6,000 signatures in a very short time thru the power of the Internet!
I cannot not do it, still in Chemo and feeling awful but maybe someone can. It would be a powerful message.

Hi Patricia,
Love a cause, do you want support via this thread to lobby or just support to the lobby web addresses you gave 8) I've get a large e-mail address book of like minded individuals who might be persuaded they have rellies in Limerick, but would also like to join if not.
Just for the Moderator it won't be though this site, just letting my e-mail friends know there is a problem in Limerick and can they support :)
Cheers

Hi Tony, :)
I started this thread off by suggesting that folk might like to email the Irish Genealogy site . Sharon has joined me in the quest and her idea is to present her local councilors with the evidence taken from the responce here on Rootschat. Any help from your friends would be much appreciated. If you can get them to respond on here so much the better.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Patricia,
You'll see from my footnote i'm after Franciscans, one of which, probably the most important from my research, is Bro. Patrick Dalton, from Glin, County Limerick, probably christened Michael was born in Glin, Limerick in 1837 and i can't confirm it cos the office is closed "INFURIATING" >:( >:( so will help all i can, to get records open for all :)
Cheers

I support the reopening of the Limerick center. Despite a personal visit to Dublin I was unable to find my Shea/Farrell names in Limerick parishes (I searched 12 of the most promising using Griffiths Land Valuation as a guide) It would help a lot to find the right parish. The Irish are missing a big opportunity for tourists with genealogical interests.

I strongly support the reopening of Limerick Ancestry.
For some whose ancestors left few records of their specific origins in County Limerick the Ancestry was the best resource for tracing connections.

I appreciate the links the Sharon provided to write to the two council websites in Limerick (http://www.limerickcity.ie/ and http://www.lcc.ie/), but I don't understand where to go from there. Where do we post our message?? I really want to do this as I'm planning to trip to Ireland in the Fall and would love to visit The Granary.
Thanks,
KCMomma
-
Hiya Folks,
That is a good point raised by KCMomma.
I hate to be the one to put a dampener on the enthusiasm here but what precisely are we attempting to do?
I signed a petition in my local Post Office the other day. It is being conducted on a National basis in an effort to allow pensioners to continue being allowed to draw their pensions from the Post Office instead of a bank which is what the Government would like to happen. Petitions, as far as I know, require a genuine name and address so that the names of those signing can be verified if necessary.
Here at Rootschat on the Limerick Ancestry Lobby we appear to have what we would call an email petition. You may do a Google, as I did, and you will find that there are several sites like this one http://www.hoax-slayer.com/petition-value.html I looked at the petition site on this thread and on the one to ABC Television I did not notice a name and address. I feel that a petition being presented to a local council would require the same standards as a petition being presented to a Government of a country. That means the petition requires a name and address for verification otherwise we are weakening our Lobbying position. http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/actionnetwork/A4288926#4
If I may I would like to make a suggestion. Each member who would like to see Limerick Ancestry reopen should print one or more petition forms so that a couple of dozen signatures can be obtained. They should then take the forms to their local library, Family History Centre etc and if they have the time stay for a while and ask people to sign the form. If they do not have the time the librarian or whoever is in charge of the place may permit them to leave a few forms for a few days.
Best Wishes, Christopher
-
I want to use this thread as the petition thread as each person who signs here has to be a registered user and there is a form of traceability back to each signatory through this site as apposed to other on line petitions where only names are recorded and can be up for corruption.
What we are trying to achieve is to show that the Ancestry center is wanted and needed by the genealogy community and that the local authority are loosing out on valuable funds and tourism by closing it.
It may not achieve its goal but at least we can say we tried.
I hope this clears it up.
Regards
Sharon
-
I support your petition.
Thank you
-
limerick ancestry is to reopen shortly on a scaled down level.i have been told to watch for an official announcement.the new service will be a smaller operation and not funded by local councils.the councils have no further connection to the service and i can't see any point in petitioning them.limerick city council in particular has had a problem with it's own funding due to fact that virtually all the large industrial/commercial firms are outside the city boundary which hasn't been adjusted for about 50 years.they felt that the old granary ancestry service was not financially viable.

Great news, thank you!

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here and found about this petition from the ancestry.com message boards. I had a research request in around late 2003 early 2004, but they were not able to get to it prior to the February 4, 2004 close date of the center.
Because of this, research into my Great, Great, Grandparents, Michael Hayes and Barbara Costello has not been able to progress much. A computerized index of the parish records or some other way to search quickly through the parish records for baptisms is needed in order to do research, especially if you only know the county of origin and not what parish or townland they came from.
The website:
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/csi/csi_main.cfm
This website actually has a list of all the baptisms in county Limerick. Problem is, they don't list any other key information such as parish where baptism occured, or the names of parents. They offer a link for the old center to go to next, which is of course closed down.
I think the government in County Limerick should find a way to reopen the center. Many people around the world have roots in the county, and many of them would likely come to visit County Limerick if they could find out more detailed information on where there ancestors were born within the county and lived. This could lead to tourism and business in many parts of the county that may normally not receive such business.
Consider the fact that almost every single county in Ireland has a research center open. I believe most consider it a vital part of the county for a variety of reasons.
If anyone has an update on the situation, please post it.

Hi Lew,
I don't think you will need to wait too much longer for I have advice that Limerick Ancestry will be re-opening soon, albeit under possible different supervision. Within weeks I believe.....maybe a month or two would be nearer the mark.
John....Sydney.

Thank you all for your responce.
Thanks too for the update John.
I don't think you will need to wait too much longer
There are two interesting articles on Irish History in Ancestors magazine for August 2006
www.ancestorsmagazine.co.uk
also a news item regarding the Irish records going online, a bill is going through the Irish Parliament and you can follow its progress on this site,
www.oireachtas.ie/viewdoc.asp?DocID=5472&&CatID=59
There is a detailed discussion on the bill on the Genealogy Society of Ireland at
www.familyhistory.ie
Thanks for all your support and welcome to all the new Rootschatters.

I have been in contact with the new administrators of Limerick Ancestry and it won't be long to wait now.

Hi John,
This is great news! Research on my Hayes and Costello ancestors can begin soon. I hope to be as successful here as I have been with my ancestors in County Dublin, County Leitrim, and County Galway/Mayo.
Its amazing when your able to find your ancestor on the Griffiths Valuation and go to the actual site where their house is or used to be!
