Hi Cathy,
Have you looked at the Victorian BDMs and immigration indexes?  They are available online.  If you have Maria's marriage certificate does it have her father's name on it?  Also her death certificate may have information about how long she had been in the colony.

No Marie Poole married in the states in New Jersey in 1869...to Edward Hilton...Poole was her maiden name... her death certificate states Mary Hawkins was her mother (maiden name of her mother) and  her father was John Poole.

I just can't find out when they got to Skipton...or any record of them.

Thanks for all your help anything you can find on this family is greatly appreciated...i seem to be terribly stuck and i know they/she were/was in
Skipton in 1863!!!!

Thanks for everything and especially for trying to help me in this search!!!

Regards,
Cathy Lee

Prue,

How do i find the immigration index on line... sorryfor being so dumb!!!!!this is all relatively new to me...everything I have tried turns up empty...it is frustrating yet i feel compelled to continue the search...i know she was there in 1863. her parents Mary and John Poole...(whether she had any siblings I don't know)..and in the states by 1868 and married in NJ in 1869...can't find records for her coming into the states , leaving Australia or even going to Australia...she just seems to have vanished when it comes to entering and leaving countries!

Thanks for any look ups that you could do.

Regards,

Cathy

Hi Cathy,
You're not dumb!!!  ;D  I had assumed you were in Australia and knew about these things....

http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide023/PROVguide023.jsp

Go to this page, and scroll down to the "Immigration" heading.  There are indexes to both assisted and unassisted immigrants.

What is it about the prayer book that makes you think she was in Skipton?  Were her parents in Skipton?  Sorry, I'm getting confused about who was where, when!!  ???  ;D

Hi Friends,
If Jenn's find is of significance, it looks as if she may have arrived with siblings [or relations] named Charles and Charlotte on same voyage.
Any likliehood?
Like many small towns in the centre of Victoria during those years, Skipton was thriving on the Gold rushes which brought huge numbers to the region.  I wonder whether your family was in a trade or profession which brought them to Skipton at the time.

Hi All

There is also a Maria Poole who arrived assisted passage in 1861 aged 20.

I will check the passenger lists, when I go up this weekend.  See where she was assigned and how long the tenure was.

There is no Jenny Ralph in the indexes but there is a Mrs Jane Ralph.

oh how excitig you guys ....maybe the prayer book is signed janey rather than what i thought (jenny) writing is little and old... hard to see...the prayer book says Skipton, Austraila with the year and is signed by "from your special friend"   which may be this Janey (JANE) Ralph...where where was Mrs. Jane Ralph???...near Skipton????...a gold rush town that is interesting!!!! Would they have a census from that time period of the people who lived there??...i feel with all your help we are getting closer...I don't think the Maria Poole on the Great Britain is her too old ...so to keep the dates in order.

Maria Poole (maiden Name)  b. 1840 or1845 somewhere in England

In Austraila defintely in 1863 (i assume with parents...Mary and John Poole) and I assume  she came from England...but maybe India!!!!

In 1868 I know that she was in New York City

You guys are wonderful...i can't thank you enough  for all your help...you have given me hope that i might find some information

Hi Cathy,
It looks as if Genni has turned up your girl!
For your interest, The Leigh River originates south of Ballarat near Buninyong.   Skipton is about 40 miles west of there.
Hard to know if T. Russell had a property named River Leigh or if it was merely a designation of district.
The Ballarat Genealogy Society may be able to help you with information about him.  They hold old directories and details which might tell you more.  Small fee involved. http://www.ballaratgenealogy.org.au/research.htm

Hi

According to the 1849 "Port Phillip Directory" a George Russell owned the Freehold Property at River Leigh. Possibly Thomas' father.

According to another site that area became Shelford.

You guys are geniuses...thank you, thank you so much Sue and Genni...absolutely amazing....would there be census records for that area...that I might be able to find her at...does any record tell you when she would have left Australia?

If you need anything that I can help you with from the states...or if you are ever in NJ/ NYC give a shout out...love to have you come and visit....

Thanks again guys...I was beginning to think Maria escaped all paper work as she traveled around the world!!

Have a great day!!

Hello there

with your request for census records

Australia unfortunately has never kept the census records

or if they have they are not open for public record

the aussie genies all over all lobbying this current government to keep our next census records for future generations

how easier would it have been for u s all if the bloddywell would have

Hi Cathy
There are outward passenger lists but only 1852-1861 have been indexed online at present.  If anyone is near the PROV they might be able to do a lookup for you.
