Any help out there with this one:
Found this mans family in Upper Mann Street, Toxteth Park,1881/1891, number 116. Cannot find any trace of him, my greatgrandfather. A ships Steward/cook, aged about 31/41 at this time, name of Emil David ENGELBRECHT, a German from somewhere near the Swiss border I am told. Changed his name to ENGELBERT/ENGLEBERT and dropped the Emil. Interned in 1914 in Liverpool it is said!. His wife Sarah (Langshaw) died 1908 in Liverpool. They had 6 kids that survived, lost a few. He does not appear in any of the censuses of the time and it is said he changed his name again, to what nobody can tell me, whilst he was at sea. I think my man was quite fearful for his safety as many Germans where at this time and so made it as difficult as possible for anyone to uncover his identity.

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1879

A copy of the marriage cert will give some info re: his fathers name

Looking at the 1881 census - there are 2 children John & Sarah E Willis but no relationship shown to either of the 2 Sarah's. I wonder is the surname Wylie - the image is unclear
1881
Sarah LANGSHAW Widow 54 b Cheshire Head
Sarah ENGELBERT Married 24 b Liverpool Boarder
Sarah Jane WILLIS 5 b Liverpool
John WILLIS 4 b Liverpool
Elizabeth ENGELBERT 9 months b Liverpool Dtr
On the 1891 census - Sarah Englebert is living next door to Sarah Langshaw. John is now shown as Englebert and son to Sarah junior, whilst Sarah E is living with Sara Langshaw and is shown as surname Langshaw and grand daughter to Sarah senior
1901 census
Hannah Engelbert 18 Niece
David T Langshaw 18 Nephew
Sarah Langshaw 74 Cheshire Head
Thomas Langshaw 41 widower Son

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1875
LANGSHAW Sarah WYLIE Thomas Liverpool, St. Alban Liverpool 2017LP/2/464
So Sarah was a widow when she married Englebert
Looking on the GRO index, the children appear to have been registered as ENGELBRECHT

Many thanks everone.
Carol, I have the marriage certificate you speak of, and all the census records mentioned, though in 1891, I have Sarah still living with Sarah Langshaw and her son Samuel, at 31 Penrith Street with a host of new Engelberts, an Elizabeth, Sarah and John Willis/Wylie, Hannah, David Samuel, my Grandfather, Mary Jane, and a Maud Mary.
Thanks again
Frederick
