Title: James Benfield death/burial, Bledington
Post by: sre on Monday 15 May 06 15:16 BST (UK)
Hi

I am looking for the death/burial of James Benfield in Bledington, Glos.

He died between 1814 and 1841.

I have found his wife Mary and family on the 1841 census for Bledington, but not James.  His last son Thomas was cr 10.7.1814 at Bledington.

If anyone out there can help me I would be much obliged

Thanks
Sheila

James Benfield was buried in Bledington on October 29th 1835.
It says he was aged 72.
Would that sound about right?

Brilliant, it certainly sounds like him, the age is about right if I have been following the right chap.

Could you tell me your source just for my records.

Thanks very much for you help.

That answers the question on my other posting, I replied before reading this..........

May I be so bold as to ask where you got the transcriptions from.........

I find Glos very frustrating as very little has been published in the areas that I am interested in...........

Many thanks for all you help
Sheila

I am thinking this James Benfield is my great great great grandfather. Married to Mary Austin
Father of John Benfield. Would love to know a little more about them.
Thanks Christine.

Hi,
The Gloucestershire PRs have been digitalised and are available on A******y. But be careful. Trust ONLY the digitalised records which can be searched for parish by parish.
The transcribed records on A******y are NOT to be trusted. These records were, believe it or not, transcribed in China! There are MANY errors on the transcribed records and any search results here should be checked against the digitalised records, which are a facsimile of the actual PRs, to check the accuracy of the entry.

Hi all

Apologies for not responding earlier, I’ve been having trouble with my email account so was unable to pick up my notifications from Rootschat .....

Christine – it’s been a while since I looked at the Benfield’s so needed to refresh my memory – I am descended from Ann sister to your John – I have their parents as James Benfield cr 1764 Shipton and Mary Austin cr 1776 Tadmarten, married 1793 Tadmarten.  Which of John’s many children are you descended from?

James’s parents I believe to be John and Hannah nee Cook married 1756 Bledington, both are buried Shipton – I have found 8 children for them – I’m afraid that’s about as far as I have got with this family .....

Victor – many thanks for your input, I have only recently discovered that A****try have the PR’s for Gloucestershire so am busy plodding through my various Glos families – you are right about the state of the transcriptions – I have in my records Thomas Norman and Keziah Bartlett getting married on 8.11.1798 at Chedworth, it has been transcribed as Thomas Narman and Regiah Cart?? the only way I was able to find it was to enter just the date and parish – I’ve submitted an amendment but it’s not been actioned yet – I’m also having fun with my Hinks family but that’s another story .....

BC – thanks to you also for you help past and present with the Bledington PR’s

Regards to you all
Sheila

Hi Sheila,
Nice to find a distance relation. I am a descendant of John & Eleanor's son "William" born 1838. I am trying to find out how and when he came to Australia. He is a hard man to follow as I can only confirm he was on the 1851 Bledington census aged 13. I know he married my Great Grandma Anne Jane (Annie) Sutton in Australia in 1877. So i am missing 25 years. His birth cert calls him William his marriage cert calls him William Albert and his death cert calls him William Ernest. It is frustrating me a little. Yes i too have James & Mary (Molly) Austin, also John & Hannah Cook but not much on them. (UNCOMFIRMED) above them I have John & Jane ? and above them I have Johnis & Milicenta.).
I am only new to this  but it is so rewarding walking in their shoes. Thanks for replying and keep me in mind if you get back to the Benfields one day.
Chris

Hi Christine

The children of John Benfield and Hannah Cook were all baptized in Shipton under Wychwood, Oxfordshire.  They were all born Lyneham, Ox, information from OFHS cd OXF-CN02 which is a transcription of the parish register for Shipton ...

William      cr 10.7.1757
John         cr 10.6.1759
Jenny        cr 1.11.1761
James       cr 7.10.1764
Sarah       cr 29.11.1767
Mary         cr 1.1.1767
Elizabeth   cr 9.4.1770
Thomas    cr 10.8.1777

I looked in Oxfordshire because on their marriage John is put down as being of the parish of Lyneham.

In your post of Saturday you mention that you have unconfirmed parents for John as John and Jane .... could you tell me where you found them, so that I can have a looksee?

Regards
Sheila
