Dear Sue, Thank you so much for all your help, Hugh the elder brother of Barzillai was my great grandfather,I am trying to find the French connection, family folklore says that we have French ancestors, but looking at the names of the children of James and Martha I am more inclined to believe that there is a Greek connection, or maybe just like the young parents of today James and Martha liked to give thier children unusual names, Thank you again for your kindness, Best Regards Bethan

Hi Bethan,

I assume that you are refering to Barzillai as the unusual name.  Barzillai is actually a Biblical name from the story of David.  I have both a Barzillai and a Barzillia (the female version) from around the same era in my tree.

It may indicate  that the family were non-conformists, probably Baptists.

I must admit, I got intrigued, and then got nosy, so ...
for all those who were wondering, but were afraid to ask:

Quote
1 Kings 2:7
But show kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table:
for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.  (KJV)

Google gives 103.000 hits for barzillai, the first pages being mostly biblical references, whereas barzillia gives 604 hits, the first page being genealogy references for male children  ???

Thank you ever so much Nicky, Bob +Valda, you have all been really helpful and informative, and have filled in a lot of gaps in my research, it looks as if family legend has got it wrong again, unless I am looking at the wrong branch of the tree.
Sorry that I am not able to thank you individually as I have not worked out how to do it yet, I am a bit of a novice on the computer, but thank you all for your help.
Best Regards Bethan

Hi Bob,

My Barzillai was definately male.

Barzillai Deacon b 1839 Fleckney, Leics  and his sister Barzillia Deacon born 1842 Fleckney.  They also had a brother Job and a sister Hannah.  Their Uncle Abraham founded the "Strict and Peculiar Carmel Chapel" in Fleckney.

There are several other related Barzillai Deacon males around the latter half of the 19th century.
