Title: Christian names

Please can anyone tell me whether it was usual in Lancashire to name the first son after his paternal grandfather as opposed to the child's father's name which was usual in other parts of the country?  Clutching at straws to find the father of Thomas Parker born 1804 in the Ribbleton area and who named his first son William.

Hi,

They don`t always follow the convention but yes the first son could be named after his paternal grandfather.  The following is a guide only:

First Son - Father`s father
Second Son - Mother`s Father
Third Son - Father
Fourth Son - Father`s eldest Brother
First Daughter - Mother`s Mother
Second Daughter - Father`s Mother
Third Daughter - Mother
Fourth Daughter - Mother`s Eldest Sister
