It has been a long time since I first posted this but this is what I think the case is
Ann BATTEN was born Sutton about 1811 from censuses
Ann's marriage was witnessed in 1830 in Paulton by a George BATTEN
Ann and her husband George Amos witnessed the marriage of an Elizabeth Batten in Paulton Dec 1837 Elizabeth's father was Joseph a labourer

A George BATTEN has been found baptised in Chew Magna in 1816 son of John and Ann abode B Sutton he has been found in Bishop Sutton on the 1841 and 1851 censuses still in Bishop Sutton

So it would point towards Bishop Sutton for Ann's birth but she does not appear in Free Reg can anyone check the Chew Magna register for me please
It would be good to see how Ann George and Elizabeth relate but WONDERFUL to find Ann's parents as she is direct line and has been hidden for so long

Trees :) with fingers crossed that someone can help.

Update thanks to Steve's wonderful work
HOORAY I THINK I HAVE FOUND THEM
Josias & Ann BATTEN had 6 children baptised between 1783 and 1800 in Chew Magna The second child was Josias born 1788 he married Elizabeth Perry 10 Apr 1806 Chew Magna they had 8 children baptised in Chew Magna but living in Bishop Sutton
The first was George 1807 he witnessed Ann's wedding
next was Ann Perry 1809 she married George Amos and they witnessed Elizabeth and Elijah Chiver's marriage
The fifth child was Betty which is a pet name for Elizabeth she was baptised 16 Jun 1817 so she looks like  Elizabeth who married Elija Chivers
Your thoughts please do you think this is the family
 A very happy

Hi Trees

I found the baptism in the transcripts at  Yahoo Groups Somerset hundreds - although I do have the Chew Magna fiche for this period. Josias (sometimes Josiah) was a coal miner living in Bishop Sutton. Strangely enough I was in that village the weekend before last & you can't imagine anything more unlikely than a coalfield nearby.

I thought Josias = Joseph when I saw the entry - perhaps he was "Joe" in the family.

Thanks Steve,
I have used the yahoo transcripts now to fill the rest of the family in I've got 2 generations back now with siblings wow I can't believe how easy it was. I had forgotten the yahoo group I had used it for my Paulton family most of their transcripts appear on free reg too but for some unknown reason Ann Perry BATTEN was missing from there.
I don't suppose you took any photos of Bishop Sutton by any chance?
Do you have any baptisms before 1781 for  Chew Magna?

The only photos I took in the village were of the camp site we stayed in  - not very interesting genealogically! I took some of Chew Magna church though, as I have plenty of ancestors from there.

I'm at work at present, but will check how far back the fiche I have goes & let you know tomorrow

Hi Trees

I've checked the fiche I hold & I have baptisms & burials 1686-1812 and marriages 1686-1781. Please let me know what you'd like me to check - I can't at this stage do a complete search for one name, but if you could point me towards specific names and  a general idea of dates I'll do what I can

That is a wonderful offer Steve thank you very much
Please don't spend all your precious time on it though I've been looking for our Ann for 23 years so a little more wait wont be a hardship  ;D
here is the list so far
Marriage of Josias BATTEN and Ann? first Known child 1781
Baptism of BATTEN children of Josias and Ann before 1781 I just have a feeling there should be more than the 7 I have found from 1781
Baptism of Josias BATTEN about 1760
Death of JosiasBatten (born 1788 last child bap in chew Magna 1800
Death of Elizabeth wife of Josias  last child bap in chew Magna 1800

Any of the above would be wonderful

Many thanks Martin and welcome to Roots Chat hope you enjoy it here
When you say you have found some one of the same name do you mean Ann Batten?
I am happy with the Ann we found in Bishops Sutton which was much nearer the area of her marriage and martial home But if you have found an Ann of the right age in Sutton that will need looking at

As i have mentioned i had found a hamlet sutton nr castlecary   i have since found that its in the parish of ditcheat  whitstone hundred

ditcheat parish records are listed in the hundred but sadly the records only start in 1813`s   Another peace of information i have received from a researcher is that it was common at this time  to take children  back to the mothers ancestral home to have the children christened

i hope this will help anyone else searching for sutton

I too, have a Sutton, Somerset born ancestor. His name was John Neal/Neil born around 1785 in "Sutton, Somerset".  John Neal married a Mary ? and in 1841 they were living in Lyme Regis. In 1841 John was in his 60s, as was Mary. The first child born to them, was in 1820. Was Mary John's second marriage?

I don't know where John and Mary married, as I have been unable to find a marriage. Any help will be very welcome.

Roe of Dublin - can't get my head around this site.  Apparently I can't send you a reply to your personal message because I have not posted at least 3 times !!!!!!
Anyway - sorry, but I don't have any details of a Stephen Roe - but there are other Roes of mine in Meath area - possibly a bit later.  Will let you know if I ever come across him.
Regards Almo.  Out of curiosity are you related to him ?  I had quite a few in Dublin, but most were escapees from Co Laois.
