Title: OT - Talk Talk
Post by: Susie1 on Tuesday 09 May 06 17:10 BST (UK)
I know this not a Genealogy question as such, but I use my computer all the time for Genealogy and am on Broadband.  Has anyone moved over to Talk Talk for their phone and Free Broadband, if so how have they found it.  I'm looking at moving from BT.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
Sue

I have Talk talk for just my calls but due to my area i am unable to get the free broadband or line rental. I know of other people that have had it and they say they dont notice the difference, except the price. I have got shot of BT and i am looking to Eclipse for my broadband but as soon as i get posted i will changing over to talk talk. Their website gives some good info about availability.
 ;)

Thank you both for your replies.  Sorry that I have not replied before but for some reason I am not able to access Rootschat anymore from my computer and am using another means to reply to any messages left.  I will seriously consider changing to Talk Talk.
Thanks again
Sue

Hi Susie1
Have you considered using Voip. I use a company called Voipcheap for most of my calls.  I am always on the phone Ireland or USA.  I payed £5.00 for credit it lasts 120 days before you have to top up again.  You don't even need a headset now if you log in to their homepage there is an option to make the call via your home phone.Heres their site.

http://www.voipcheap.co.uk/en/index.html

I am with NTL so I don't pay phone rental because its free.  But if they started to charge me for it I would cancel it and use Voip. Joe :D

The Talk Talk offer appears to be experiencing possible "teething" troubles and is the subject of a number of complaints (see http://bbs.adslguide.org.uk/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=talktalk ).

Although to be fair this is possibly mainly game players who are complaining about the speed (or lack of it) in the connection.

Read the small print very carefully Susie1...there are a lot of 'Ifs, Buts and maybe's' there...plus Download limits etc.,

Have you tried Skype Beta 2....?

Hi,

If you are seriously considering changing over you may like to have a look at issue 216 of the magazine Computer Active. They had quite a large write up on this subject in last weeks edition.

Frances

I am not sure if I am allowed to name magazines, if I have broken the rules then
perhaps one of the mods can delete this :-\

Moderator Comment:  No problem, you are merely quoting a source

Thank you all for your comments.  There are certainly a lot more things to take into consideration now before I swap to anywhere.  I just feel that BT prices are very high compared to other places.  They have now said that things are changing in August, but couldn't tell us what.  They also said that priority for line  repair is to their own customers and that if we went else where we would have a longer wait to get things fixed as they still do the fixing but on behalf of whoever you are with.
I couldn't get on Rootschat for a week, it just suddenly went off, nobody seems to know why and I don't know who fixed it.  I could get on every other site except Rootschat, and nobody else seemed to have a problem, only me,  there were so many people involved with looking into it I don't know if it was BT or not who fixed it.   I don't want it to happen again and not have any backing.
Thanks again for your replies it has been very helpful.
