Hi,
I've been requested to help a researcher locate the house of his great grandmother. Having failed to find it in Cheshire or Shropshire, Lancashire is my last hope.
The substantial black & white timber framed building was featured in a painting by H.A. Whittle dated 1856.
Please look at the house and the information found so far, on this web page;

A major art dealer, who has sold paintings by the same artist, says that the picture "looks similar to other 19th century views of The Old Packet House, Worsley, Near Manchester, but there were several other half timbered buildings which were much painted by artists at this period"
Many thanks for looking.
Gwynne Chadwick.

Hi there,
It's not an area I know, but a Google Images search on "Packet House Worsley" shows several modern photographs of the house. Unfortunately most of them seem to be taken from the canal side so it's hard to compare them with the painting! But it may be that one of the local photographers whose work comes up - such as the Worsley Gallery at www.adebroom.plus.com - could help you identify the house in the painting?

Hi! I live near the Packet House and I don't think that this is it. Unless there has been a substantial change over the years, the surroundings bear little relation to the picture. I will go up and have a good look round though and let you know if i find anything to indicate otherwise! Cheers, Pippa

Hi Gwynne
Might be a long shot but this is a few miles (6-8) from Worsleyhttp://uk-hotels-guest-houses-bed-and-breakfast.co.uk/Site/Hotel.asp?AccomID=1308
Best wishes

I don't think that is the one Tony - that is on the main road from Altrincham to Manchester - but.........

I think i agree with you Keith, but there is a slim possibility in the look. Always worth a try :)

Maybe it was the "Gatehouse" of a larger house named the Old Packet House !! ::) ::)

Hi,
First and foremost, thanks to everyone who has contributed to the search for this house. It is appreciated and all comments will be passed onto the researcher.
Based on what I've seen, I personally don't think it is the Old Packet House at Worsley. I can't reconcile modern views of the property to the 1856 painting.
During the last week, more than 450 helpful people on the Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire lists have viewed the painting. Thank you. I still feel confident that the house will be identified. Somebody, somewhere, has the answer.
Gwynne.

Wardley Hall is a possibility.

Ordsall Hall is a (possibly stronger) poser.
