I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I have a photograph of an elderly lady from Victorian (?) times and am trying to identify her.
The photographer is a Herbert Hartley of The Studio, Vivary Bridge, Colne and I wondered if anyone knows the dates he traded there.
I have a book of Lancashire Photographers 1840 to 1940 but this has drawn a blank.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Herbert Hartley was my g-grandfather's older brother and was born around 1875. Currently family history of him is a bit sketchy, but he did take my g-grandparents' wedding portrait in 1906. By 1916 he had diversified into cinemas.
So your picture may be late Victorian, early Edwardian? Would be interested to hear if you learn anything more, as my branch of the family doesn't seem to have kept in touch!

On page 488 of the 1896 edition of the General and Commercial Directory of Burnley,Nelson and Colne there is a listing under photographers for a Thomas Hartley on New Market Street, Colne but not a Herbert Hartley at this time.

Hi, this does not answer your question, but there is a list of Colne photographers here http://www.briercliffesociety.co.uk/talkback/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=2214
