Title: The Farm Tyrrelspass
Post by: Anthony Daly on Sunday 07 May 06 21:28 BST (UK)
I am seeking any  information on the Daly family from Kilbbeggan, in  County Westmeath.
My grandfather possibly James Daly was a land owner and there is a James Daly   listed in Griffins Valuation  and also a James Daly listed under Irish flax growers in 1796.

When I visited Ireland in 1992 I stopped by the now nerarly derelict farm which at that time was being used by a local fishing club..

Does anyone have information      If anyone can help I would appreciate it.

Many thanks,    Anthony Daly

Hello,  I am trying to locate some relatives whom I believe originated from Tyrrells Pass,  would you be kind enough to give me the address you contacted for your enquiry as I would like to submit a similar one for  surname Johnston.
Thanks
J

Hi J,

just to be going on with:

on http://www.failteromhat.com/
click on
Griffiths Valuation of Ireland Index Extracts 1848-1864

enter Johnston in Enter full or partial Surname:
click on Westmeath in Choose county/province

and click on search.

This turns up a Fineas Johnston from Tyrrelispass, Ballykilmore Village in the parish of Newtown in Westmeath

One of yours ???

Bob

Thank you Bob,

Yes probably Fineas was one of us, but  my grt.grt.grandfather was a William born (I assume about 1790) Sure it must be a relative but maybe a brother?

My grt.grandfather was Robert Hardcastle Johnston (says on his tombstone born 1821 Newtown, Co. Westmeath) I cannot find any trace of him in this area.  The only thing I have found is a Benjamin Hardcastle Johnston  who emigrated to Ontario Canada in about 1850, this I am sure is a relative as I have established they came from Westmeath.  So frustrating I cannot find the actual place of birth I am wondering if the parish records would help.
Thanks for your help, any suggestions would be appreciated.
Regards
J

Hi Anthony,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

two long shots here:

Official Authorities, County WESTMEATH 1834
http://www.from-ireland.net/auths/west/west1834.htm
mentions three DALYs
(2 magistrates, Joseph Morgan and Owen D. and a Captain C. Daly) but very little information, otherwise.

and in Dec. 2003 there was a query on the Rootsweb Westmeath list about Mulingar residents, in particular an Anne DALY who married James LEE.
http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/IRL-WESTMEATH/2003-12/1070441707

Does that fit in with any other details you have ???

Dear Sarah,

Thanks for offer.  I have discovered that most of my relatives are buried in Relic cemetery in Kilbeggan and also in Durrow Cemetery .

I have traced my grandfather Martin J Daly b 1876  gg grandfather Joseph Daly b1838 and ggg grandfather  Thomas Daly b 1792 .

Initially I saw on an old map , townland survey  1838 that there was Daly's land  near Tyrellspass   also Cornacher where later the Daly's had a small farm.     Is it possible  that if you can search for any Daly's buried when you next visit  I am sorry I have no names but would be interested in brothers and sisters.

Look out for either "Cornacher"  or "Kilchloghan" which is  on all of their birth or death certificates.

Thank you again

Anthony Daly

I am trying to find any further records of Fineas Johnston of Newtown, Tyrrelspass, Westmeath.
My great great grandfather was a William Johnston of Westmeath circa 1790.  My great grandfather was Robert Hardcastle Johnston of Newtown, Westmeath. 1818.  If anyone has come across any records relating to these I would be very interested.
Thank you
J

Hi to you...yes...lets see where we get to with this.

Seems there are a fair few Dempseys in and around Kilbeggan parish...have you looked up Griffiths Valuation....it was done in Westmeath in 1854 and I have found Daniel Dempsey and Robert (possibly brothers) living/renting property in the area and there is an Edward Dempsey...

My gr gr grandfather was Daniel Dempsey Army private then Corporal born 1811/12 and on leaving the army in 1855 or so settled back in Tyrellspass. He married Winifred Judge....

so I wonder who your Daniel Dempsey is...have you any more info??

Will look out notes and see what else i have.

Daly is an extremely common name in Co Westmeath - found in large numbers in nearly every parish.  I'm transcribing the Tithe Applotments for the southern part of the county.

Hi Anthony, Have been trying to contact you.  It sounds quite possible that we have some Daly connections. My grandfather Joseph daly and his brother, James both emigrated to Australia in the 1870's. They were sons of Mary and Patrick Daly , both born at Tyrrellspass. I would love to hear from you or anyone who can fill in some missing pieces.
