hi, Can anyone help I am looking for a Patrick docherty who married Mary quigley in Irleand ( yes a long shot ) they came to glasgow some time in the 1870 how would I go about finding out where/when they came over from Ireland ? :)

Unfortunately there were no records kept of people travelling between Scotland and Ireland as at that time they would have been part of the same country.
Your best bet would be the census entries but if they are anything like my irish lot they arrived after one census and died before the next one .
If they had children in Scotland the childrens birth records may have more information possibly date and place of marriage.
try the pay site at Scotlands People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index.aspx
or the freecen census search at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/

I have had a quick look at the 1881 census and there are at least 3 Patrick/Mary Docherty (or Doherty) families .... do you have any idea what their age would have been around the 1881 census.
For example one family (Doherty) has an 18 yr old daughter born in Ireland and a 16 yr old born Glasgow.

There is a birth entry for a Bernard Docherty , 1865 on the I.G.I. to these parents. This in turn made me look at Ben Palmers site which gives another child to these parents plus the bonus of the townland they came from.

This is very good news as I took a guess on the name as this is my grandfathers name in other words
Bernard Docherty grandfathers B 1896 Glasgow parents Patrick Docherty and Eizabeth Kerr married Glasgow 29 11 1872
there is no mention of them on the 1871 census so I can only work that they where still in ireland before then -
Patrick docherty parents Patrick Docherty and Mary quigley
They seem to like the names patrick bernard william,

I have Quigley and Doherty in my family. My Quigley's are from the Muff area of Donegal and Derry. My great grandfather, Patrick Joseph Quigley born about 1860 had a brother James, a sister Agnes and another sister whose name I do not know. This sister went to live in Greenock, as did other members of the Quigley family. My dad had Doherty cousins as well as other Doherty relations. The names are very common around Donegal and Derry.
Good Luck

My Great Aunt Annie Anderson b. 07 Oct 1896 in 23 Fox Street , Leith , grandmother's half sister, married Michael Docherty Birth 14 OCT 1894 in Leith, Edinburghshire Nov. 1915. Michael's parents were Patrick Docherty Birth 1857 in County Kerry, Ireland (we believe) and Rose McCabe Birth 1858 in Ireland . They had Patrick, John and Michael as far as I know.
Patrick parents were: Patrick Docherty b. in Ireland and Mary (last name unknown).
Anne and Michael had: Alexander, Annie, John, Michael, Patrick, Rose and Isabella. Isabella married Angus Campbell Maitland. They had: Angus, George and Scott. Angus, my 1st cousin, married 1st to Mary Kempton and had: Greg and Ryan, he married 2nd to: Julie Strickland and had: Jessica. I do not know her husband's name but they had: Bradley, Jay, Taylor, and Charlene. Jessica is my 3rd or 4th cousin. Does any of this sound familiar.
