Title: Land family
Post by: westcoastmum on Thursday 04 May 06 19:44 BST (UK)
Hello
I am a new poster looking for the family of Robert James Land, born in Norfolk, Ryston in 1844.  He moved to Somerset and had a family- Laura, Frederick, Alice and Ethel.  They moved to Nebraska in the early 1900's after Robert died.  There are descendants of these four children spread across the USA and Canada.  I am visiting England this summer to continue my research but am having a problem with tracking the Lands in Norfolk.  I would also like to research Robert's wife, Charlotte Elizabeth Martin, who lived in Catcott, Sumerset.  She was a "doorstep child".  Any suggestions as to where to go to find some information would be appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat.

Do you have any of the census information for Robert?

Let me know and I will see what I can find.

Hi Lynda,

Welcome to rootschat  :)  :)

I'm not sure what you are searching for exactly. I think I can see him on the 1861 census with his parents James and Jamima. Would you like the details or do you already have it?
RG9/1240 18 1

Oops - Beaten me to it, Nicky  :)  :)

Hello Joburg, Tanja and Nicky.

Thank you for your help.  I went to the LDS church and was able to see the census from 1841 to 1901.  In Norfolk I think that James and Jemima were the gggrandparents.  I have been able to follow them along but have not been able to trace what happened to the daughters, Louisa and Elizabeth. I am very green at this but hope to improve.  As for the Somerset group I have ordered some microfilm to look at.

Thanks again

Lynda

Hi Linda,

Are Laura and Louisa one and the same person, according to you? (I think they are, looking at census returns).

Who is Elizabeth?

Who emigrated?

Hi Tanja

Laura was the daughter of Robert  James Land.  She came to Nebraska in 1906, after Robert died, along with her sisters Ethel, Alice Louisa, and brother Fred.
Louisa was Robert's sister.  The 1861 census has her as a cook/domestic for a Charlotte Brown in East Dereham in Norfolk.  It seems that Robert was the only one to leave for Somerset.  Louisa and her sister Elizabeth are the ones I am having difficulty tracking.

Thanks

Lynda

Hi Lynda   :)

I see Elizabeth is still with her parents in 1871 (in Reymerstone, Mitford registration district).
Looking at possible marriages, I see
December 1872
Mitford registration district
Elizabeth Land to possibly Stephen Bushell
4b 770

And 1891
RG12/1552 7 8
Garvestone, Norfolk (Mitford RG)

Stephen Bushell, head, 54, Agricultural labourer, b. Garvestone
Elizabeth, wife, 53, Dressmaker, b. Hingham

in 1881, they are already together (no children), and, as I was hoping, 1871 is unmarried and living with his parents in 1871. If she's the one, then she cheats a little with her age, I must admit.

Possible death Elizabeth Bushell September quarter 1893 age 56 Litfor registration district  4b 175

Unfortunately, you'd need the marriage cert to prove or disprove that this is the same Elizabeth  :-\
I'll have another look to see if I can see a better match.

As for Louisa...

I can see a marriage in Mitford Registration district for Louisa Land in March quarter 1865 - 4b 422. Unfortunately, only one of the 2 possible spouses (Henry Cooper) is on the incomplete index for now.

Searching for a Louisa (any surname) born ca. 1840 in Ryston Norfolk, I see there is one Louisa popping up in 1901, unfortunately all by herself, widow, a shopkeeper confectioner. Having another look to see if I can trace her back with a husband Henry.

Having a quick look, I see Jesse is to be seen in 1901 with wife Ethel age 30 born Bedford (marriage Mitford September quarter 1900 - Jesse Cooper/Ethel Howard, 4b 526). He dies early: Sep 1904, Mitford, age 34, 4b 155.

Hi Tati

Wow!  I am amazed at the amount of information you have uncovered.  I spent hours at the LDS family center and went around in circles.  I should then write away for the marriage certificates to confirm the information?  How did you track down the marriages?

Thanks so much

Lynda

Check out this marvellous site (it's not complete though - under 'information' you will find coverage charts). Their database is also available at www.ancestry.co.uk , although updates sometimes take a little time before they appear on the ancestry site. Henry Cooper as Louisa's possible spouse, for instance, didn't appear on ancestry.

Don't know how familiar you are with certificates: They can be ordered online here:

(Can't enter the site right now but should work)
FAQs regarding certificates (what info you will find etc.)
